TL;DR
  • ๐Ÿช‘ Batchim (๋ฐ›์นจ, "support") is the bottom consonant of a Korean syllable โ€” it props up the syllable like a chair leg.
  • ๐ŸŽฏ Despite 27 possible batchim spellings (single + double), only 7 representative sounds ever come out of your mouth: [k] [n] [t] [l] [m] [p] [ng].
  • โœจ Double batchims look scary but only ONE consonant is pronounced โ€” until liaison (์—ฐ์Œ) hits with a vowel, then they SPLIT and link forward.

๐ŸฆŠ
Iru Helper Note: This is the deepest pronunciation rule in Korean โ€” and the secret to sounding natural. Don't try to memorize all 27 batchims today. Learn the 7 buckets, recognize liaison when you see it, and let real words do the teaching. Once this clicks, every Korean word becomes predictable. ๐ŸฆŠ

๐ŸŒˆ The Big Picture

In Korean, every syllable can have a bottom consonant sitting under the vowel โ€” that's the batchim (๋ฐ›์นจ). The word itself means "to receive / to support," and that's exactly what it does: it props up the syllable.
  • ๊ฐ• = ใ„ฑ (top) + ใ… (right) + ใ…‡ (batchim) โ†’ [gang]
  • ๋ฐฅ = ใ…‚ (top) + ใ… (right) + ใ…‚ (batchim) โ†’ [bap]
  • ๋‹ญ = ใ„ท (top) + ใ… (right) + ใ„ณ (double batchim) โ†’ [dak]
Batchim totally changes how a syllable sounds, and mastering it is the difference between sounding like a learner and sounding natural. ๐ŸŽฏ

๐ŸŽฏ The 7 Representative Sounds (๋Œ€ํ‘œ์Œ)

Korean has many letters, but at the end of a syllable, only 7 distinct sounds ever leave your mouth. Every batchim collapses into one of these 7 buckets:
  • [k] โ€” ใ„ฑ, ใ…‹, ใ„ฒ, ใ„ณ, ใ„บ (everything in the "k" family)
  • [n] โ€” ใ„ด, ใ„ต, ใ„ถ (ใ„ด family)
  • [t] โ€” ใ„ท, ใ…Œ, ใ……, ใ…†, ใ…ˆ, ใ…Š, ใ…Ž (silent stop โ€” the BIG bucket)
  • [l] โ€” ใ„น, ใ„ฝ, ใ„พ, ใ…€ (ใ„น family)
  • [m] โ€” ใ…, ใ„ป (ใ… family)
  • [p] โ€” ใ…‚, ใ…, ใ„ฟ, ใ…„ (ใ…‚ family)
  • [ng] โ€” ใ…‡ (unique โ€” no friends)
๐Ÿ’ก The trick: look at the batchim, ask "which family?", and you have the sound. Letters within a family ALL pronounce the same when they're at the bottom. ๐Ÿชฎ

๐Ÿ”ค Single Batchim (ํ™€๋ฐ›์นจ) โ€” 16 Single Consonants

A single batchim is one consonant at the bottom. Here's what each pronounces as:
  • ใ„ฑ โ†’ [k] โ€” ์ˆ˜๋ฐ• [su-bak] watermelon ๐Ÿ‰
  • ใ„ฒ โ†’ [k] โ€” ๋ฐ– [bak] outside ๐Ÿšช
  • ใ…‹ โ†’ [k] โ€” ๋ถ€์—Œ [bu-eok] kitchen ๐Ÿณ
  • ใ„ด โ†’ [n] โ€” ์‚ฐ [san] mountain โ›ฐ๏ธ
  • ใ„ท โ†’ [t] โ€” ๊ณง [got] soon ๐Ÿ•’
  • ใ…Œ โ†’ [t] โ€” ๋ฐญ [bat] field ๐ŸŒพ
  • ใ…… โ†’ [t] โ€” ์˜ท [ot] clothes ๐Ÿ‘•
  • ใ…† โ†’ [t] โ€” ์žˆ [it] (verb stem "exist") โœจ
  • ใ…ˆ โ†’ [t] โ€” ๋‚ฎ [nat] daytime โ˜€๏ธ
  • ใ…Š โ†’ [t] โ€” ๊ฝƒ [kkot] flower ๐ŸŒธ
  • ใ…Ž โ†’ [t] โ€” (rare alone; usually silent or assimilated) ๐Ÿšซ
  • ใ„น โ†’ [l] โ€” ๋ฌผ [mul] water ๐Ÿ’ง
  • ใ… โ†’ [m] โ€” ๊ณฐ [gom] bear ๐Ÿป
  • ใ…‚ โ†’ [p] โ€” ๋ฐฅ [bap] rice ๐Ÿš
  • ใ… โ†’ [p] โ€” ๋ฌด๋ฆŽ [mu-reup] knee ๐Ÿฆต
  • ใ…‡ โ†’ [ng] โ€” ๊ฐ• [gang] river ๐ŸŒŠ
(Tense ใ„ธ ใ…ƒ ใ…‰ never appear as batchim.) ๐Ÿšซ

๐Ÿ‘ฏ Double Batchim (๊ฒน๋ฐ›์นจ) โ€” 11 Pairs

A double batchim stacks two different consonants at the bottom. The kicker: only one of them is pronounced when the syllable stands alone. ๐Ÿคฏ
Here's the full set with which letter "wins":
  • ใ„ณ (ใ„ฑ+ใ……) โ†’ [k] โ€” ๋ชซ [mok] share/portion ๐Ÿ“Š
  • ใ„ต (ใ„ด+ใ…ˆ) โ†’ [n] โ€” ์•‰๋‹ค [an-tta] to sit ๐Ÿช‘
  • ใ„ถ (ใ„ด+ใ…Ž) โ†’ [n] โ€” ๋งŽ๋‹ค [man-ta] many ๐Ÿ“ˆ
  • ใ„บ (ใ„น+ใ„ฑ) โ†’ [k] โ€” ๋‹ญ [dak] chicken ๐Ÿ”
  • ใ„ป (ใ„น+ใ…) โ†’ [m] โ€” ์‚ถ [sam] life ๐ŸŒฑ
  • ใ„ผ (ใ„น+ใ…‚) โ†’ [l] โ€” ๋„“๋‹ค [neol-tta] wide (๋ฐŸ๋‹ค [bap-tta] "to step on" is the famous exception โ†’ [p]!) ๐Ÿ“
  • ใ„ฝ (ใ„น+ใ……) โ†’ [l] โ€” ์™ธ๊ณฌ [oe-gol] single-mindedness ๐ŸŽฏ
  • ใ„พ (ใ„น+ใ…Œ) โ†’ [l] โ€” ํ•ฅ๋‹ค [hal-tta] to lick ๐Ÿ‘…
  • ใ„ฟ (ใ„น+ใ…) โ†’ [p] โ€” ์Š๋‹ค [eup-tta] to chant ๐Ÿ“–
  • ใ…€ (ใ„น+ใ…Ž) โ†’ [l] โ€” ์‹ซ๋‹ค [sil-ta] to dislike (ใ…Ž silent) ๐Ÿ™…
  • ใ…„ (ใ…‚+ใ……) โ†’ [p] โ€” ๊ฐ’ [gap] price ๐Ÿ’ฐ
๐Ÿ’ก Pattern shortcut: in most pairs, the first letter wins โ€” except for ใ„บ, ใ„ป, ใ„ฟ where the second letter wins. Memorize these 3 exceptions, the rest follow the default. ๐Ÿง

โœจ The Liaison Rule (์—ฐ์Œ)

This is where Korean gets musical. When a syllable with a batchim is followed by a syllable starting with silent ใ…‡ + vowel, the batchim jumps over and becomes the next syllable's initial sound. ๐ŸŽถ
Single batchim liaison:
  • ์ฑ…์ด (book + subject particle): written ์ฑ… + ์ด, pronounced [chae-gi] โ€” ใ„ฑ jumps to fill the empty ใ…‡ chair. ๐Ÿ“–
  • ์˜ท์ด (clothes + subject): written ์˜ท + ์ด, pronounced [o-shi] โ€” ใ…… jumps and softens before ใ…ฃ. ๐Ÿ‘•
  • ๊ณต์› (park): written ๊ณต + ์›, pronounced [gong-won] โ€” ใ…‡ doesn't jump (it stays as [ng]), but the syllables blend. ๐ŸŒณ
Double batchim liaison โ€” they SPLIT! ๐ŸŽ†
  • ๋‹ญ์ด (chicken + subject): written ๋‹ญ + ์ด, pronounced [dal-gi] โ€” the ใ„น stays as the batchim [l], and the ใ„ฑ jumps over.
  • ๊ฐ’์ด (price + subject): written ๊ฐ’ + ์ด, pronounced [gap-shi] โ€” the ใ…‚ stays, and the ใ…… jumps over (and tenses to ใ…† before ใ…ฃ).
  • ์•‰์•„ (sit, informal): written ์•‰ + ์•„, pronounced [an-ja] โ€” the ใ„ด stays, and the ใ…ˆ jumps over.
๐Ÿ’ก The pattern: with double batchims, the FIRST consonant stays as the batchim sound, and the SECOND consonant jumps to the next syllable. ๐Ÿชœ

๐Ÿ“š Cross-check note

All batchim sounds, double-consonant rules, and liaison patterns above were cross-checked against the National Institute of Korean Language (korean.go.kr) official Hangul orthography and pronunciation guide. โœ…

โš ๏ธ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • โŒ Pronouncing both consonants in a double batchim (saying "dalk" for ๋‹ญ) โ†’ โœ… Only ONE wins. ๋‹ญ = [dak], not "dalk". ๐Ÿ”
  • โŒ Adding a vowel after batchim (saying "bap-puh" for ๋ฐฅ) โ†’ โœ… Final consonants are unreleased. Just [bap]. ๐Ÿ”‡
  • โŒ Forgetting liaison (saying "chaek-i" instead of "chae-gi" for ์ฑ…์ด) โ†’ โœ… Batchim + ใ…‡ = liaison. The batchim jumps. โœจ
  • โŒ Pronouncing ใ…Ž batchim distinctly โ†’ โœ… ใ…Ž batchim is mostly silent or assimilated โ€” it disappears or aspirates the next sound. ๐Ÿคซ
  • โŒ Treating [t] family as "d" (saying "od" for ์˜ท) โ†’ โœ… The [t] bucket is an unreleased silent stop โ€” mouth closes, no sound out. ๐Ÿ”‡
  • โŒ Splitting a single batchim like a double โ†’ โœ… Single batchims always stay put as one sound โ€” only doubles split during liaison. ๐Ÿชฎ

๐ŸŽ‰ Batchim mastered โ€” you've cracked Korean's deepest pronunciation rule! Every Korean word, sentence, and song lyric will now sound dramatically more natural. The 7-bucket trick + liaison logic is what separates beginners from confident readers. ๐Ÿš€

G. True or false: Liaison only works when the next syllable starts with a silent ใ…‡.
Answer
True โ€” Batchim only jumps to fill an empty ใ…‡ chair. Other consonants block liaison.
H. What happens to a double batchim during liaison?
Answer
It SPLITS โ€” First letter stays as the batchim sound, second letter jumps to start the next syllable.
I. ๋ฌผ์ด ๐Ÿ’ง โ†’ [____]
Answer
[mu-ri] โ€” ใ„น batchim jumps over the silent ใ…‡ chair.
J. Why is liaison so important for sounding natural?
Answer
Korean speakers always link batchim + vowel โ€” Skipping liaison sounds choppy and learner-ish; using it makes you sound fluent. โœจ

Exercise 5 โ€” Mixed Mastery + Pitfall Patrol ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ
ย
๐Ÿ“š Vocabulary Box โ€” 7 buckets: [k n t l m p ng] โ€ข 16 single batchims, 11 double batchims โ€ข 3 exceptions where 2nd letter wins: ใ„บ ใ„ป ใ„ฟ โ€ข Liaison: batchim + ใ…‡ = jump
ย
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Identify single vs double, identify the bucket, then check for liaison.
ย
A. โŒ โ†’ โœ…: A learner says ๋‹ญ as "dalk" pronouncing both consonants. Fix it.
Answer
[dak] โ€” Double batchim ใ„บ โ†’ only the SECOND letter (ใ„ฑ) wins. The ใ„น stays silent until liaison.
B. โŒ โ†’ โœ…: A learner says ์ฑ…์ด as "chaek-i" with a hard break. Fix it.
Answer
[chae-gi] โ€” Liaison! ใ„ฑ batchim jumps over the silent ใ…‡ to start the next syllable.
C. โŒ โ†’ โœ…: A learner says ๋ฐฅ as "bap-puh" with a final puff. Fix it.
Answer
[bap] โ€” Final consonants are unreleased. Mouth shapes the [p], no air out.
D. โŒ โ†’ โœ…: A learner says ์˜ท as "od" with a clear [d]. Fix it.
Answer
[ot] โ€” ใ…… batchim falls into the [t] family โ€” silent unreleased stop, not [d].
E. โŒ โ†’ โœ…: A learner pronounces ๋งŽ๋‹ค as "man-da" without aspiration. Fix it.
Answer
[man-ta] โ€” ใ…Ž in ใ„ถ batchim aspirates the following ใ„ท โ†’ ใ…Œ. Silent but powerful!
F. Which batchim has NO friends in the 7 buckets?
Answer
ใ…‡ โ†’ [ng] โ€” The lone wolf bucket. No other letter joins it.
G. Which batchim bucket is the BIGGEST?
Answer
[t] โ€” Swallows 7 letters: ใ„ท ใ…Œ ใ…… ใ…† ใ…ˆ ใ…Š ใ…Ž. The unreleased silent stop.
H. Final boss โ€” read aloud: ๊ฝƒ์ด ๋‹ญ์„ ๋จน์–ด ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿด
Answer
[kko-chi dal-geul meo-geo] โ€” "The flower eats chicken" (silly sentence!). ๊ฝƒ์ด โ†’ ใ…Š jumps; ๋‹ญ์„ โ†’ ใ„บ splits with ใ„ฑ jumping; ๋จน์–ด โ†’ ใ„ฑ jumps. Liaison everywhere!
I. True or false: ใ„บ ใ„ป ใ„ฟ are the 3 double batchims where the SECOND letter wins.
Answer
True โ€” Memorize these 3 โ€” the rest default to first-letter-wins.
J. Pitfall check: Why is mastering batchim the key to sounding natural in Korean?
Answer
Liaison + bucket sounds = natural flow โ€” Without batchim mastery, every syllable sounds choppy and isolated. With it, Korean flows like a song. ๐ŸŽถ
