-기 때문에 gives a plain strong reason.
- 약속했기 때문에 가야 해요. — Because I promised, I have to go.
-(으)ㄴ/는 이상 adds “now that this fact is locked in, the result naturally follows.”
- 약속한 이상 가야 해요. — Now that I promised, I have to go.
The second one sounds more like:
- “I made the commitment, so I must act accordingly.”
- “This condition is already true, so there is a responsibility.”

- “now that / as long as” feels natural
Avoid it when:
- you only need a casual reason
- the result is random or unrelated
- the first clause is not a meaningful condition
- the tone would sound too formal or heavy
