-(으)면서도 is your grammar tool for simultaneous contradiction — two things happen or are true together, but they do not match neatly.
 
Think of it as:
  • “even while…”
  • “even though…”
  • “while being A, still B”
  • “A is true, and yet B is also true”
 
It is different from a plain sequence. The two sides overlap in time, identity, attitude, or situation.
  • 알면서도 모르는 척했어요.
      • [al-myeon-seo-do mo-reu-neun cheo-kae-sseo-yo]
      Even though they knew, they pretended not to know. 🎭
      알다 = to know; 모르는 척하다 = to pretend not to know.
  • 바쁘면서도 친구를 도와줬어요.

      바쁘다 = to be busy; 도와주다 = to help.

🎨 The Core -(으)면서도 Family

1. Action verbs: doing A, and yet B

Use this when someone does or knows one thing, but does something that clashes with it.
  • 알다 → 알면서도 [al-da → al-myeon-seo-do] = even though one knows
  • 보다 → 보면서도 [bo-da → bo-myeon-seo-do] = even while seeing/watching
  • 듣다 → 들으면서도 [deut-da → deu-reu-myeon-seo-do] = even while listening
  • 먹다 → 먹으면서도 [meok-da → meo-geu-myeon-seo-do] = even while eating
 

2. Descriptive verbs: being A, and yet B

Use it when a state is true, but the result or behavior feels unexpected.
  • 바쁘다 → 바쁘면서도 [ba-ppeu-da → ba-ppeu-myeon-seo-do] = even though busy
  • 피곤하다 → 피곤하면서도 [pi-gon-ha-da → pi-gon-ha-myeon-seo-do] = even though tired
  • 춥다 → 추우면서도 [chup-da → chu-u-myeon-seo-do] = even though cold
  • 좋다 → 좋으면서도 [jo-ta → jo-eu-myeon-seo-do] = even though good / while good, still...
 

3. Nouns: being A, and yet B

Use 이면서도 after a noun with batchim and 면서도 after a noun without batchim.
  • 학생 → 학생이면서도 [hak-saeng → hak-saeng-i-myeon-seo-do] = even while being a student
  • 친구 → 친구면서도 [chin-gu → chin-gu-myeon-seo-do] = even while being a friend
  • 전문가 → 전문가면서도 [jeon-mun-ga → jeon-mun-ga-myeon-seo-do] = even while being an expert

  • 규칙을 알면서도 같은 실수를 했어요.

      Even though I knew the rule, I made the same mistake. 🧩
      규칙 = rule; 같은 = same; 실수하다 = to make a mistake.
 
2. Tired, and yet continuing 🌙
  • 피곤하면서도 끝까지 발표를 들었어요.
      • [pi-gon-ha-myeon-seo-do kkeut-kka-ji bal-pyo-reul deu-reo-sseo-yo]
      Even though I was tired, I listened to the presentation until the end. 🎤
      끝까지 = until the end; 발표 = presentation; 듣다 = to listen.

  • Consonant stem + 으면서도: 먹다 → 먹으면서도, 좋다 → 좋으면서도
  • ㄹ stem + 면서도: 알다 → 알면서도, 살다 → 살면서도
  • 하다 words + 면서도: 피곤하다 → 피곤하면서도, 공부하다 → 공부하면서도
