Think of it as:
“while…”
“as…”

Use -(으)면서 when one action happens together with another action.

In many learner sentences, -(으)면서 works best when the same person does both actions:
저는 음악을 들으면서 공부해요. = I listen + I study.

🎨 Formation Rules

Attach -(으)면서 to the verb stem.

1. Vowel stem + 면서

  • 가다 [ga-da] → 가면서 [ga-myeon-seo] = while going
  • 보다 [bo-da] → 보면서 [bo-myeon-seo] = while watching/seeing
  • 마시다 [ma-si-da] → 마시면서 [ma-si-myeon-seo] = while drinking
  • 공부하다 → 공부하면서 = while studying

2. Consonant stem + 으면서

  • 먹다 [meok-da] → 먹으면서 [meo-geu-myeon-seo] = while eating
  • 읽다 [ik-da] → 읽으면서 [il-geu-myeon-seo] = while reading
  • 입다 [ip-da] → 입으면서 [i-beu-myeon-seo] = while wearing/putting on
  • 웃다 [ut-da] → 웃으면서 [u-seu-myeon-seo] = while smiling/laughing

3. ㄹ stem + 면서

For ㄹ stems, attach 면서 directly.
  • 살다 → 살면서 = while living
  • 놀다 → 놀면서 = while playing
  • 만들다 → 만들면서 = while making
  • 울다 → 울면서 = while crying

4. Negative form

Use 안 ...면서 or -지 않으면서 depending on what you want to say.
  • 안 보면서 말했어요. = I spoke without looking.
  • 공부하지 않으면서 좋은 점수를 원해요. = They want good grades while not studying.
  • 먹지 않으면서 배고프다고 해요. = They say they’re hungry while not eating.

5. Contrast / “even though” feeling

Sometimes -(으)면서 means “even though / while claiming…”, especially when the two parts conflict.
  • 알면서 왜 물어봐요?
      • [al-myeon-seo wae mu-reo-bwa-yo]
      Why are you asking when you know? 🤨
  • 바쁘다면서 왜 게임해요?
      • [ba-ppeu-da-myeon-seo wae ge-im-hae-yo]
      You say you’re busy, but why are you playing games? 🎮

For the simultaneous-action meaning, the first verb usually does not take past tense.
  • ✅ 음악을 들으면서 공부했어요. = I studied while listening to music.
  • ❌ 음악을 들었으면서 공부했어요. for simple “while listening”

🔍 -(으)면서 vs -고 vs -다가

-(으)면서 = simultaneous actions

  • 음악을 들으면서 공부해요.
      • I study while listening to music.

-고 = and / sequence / listing

  • 음악을 듣고 공부해요.
      • I listen to music and study. / I listen, then study.

-다가 = while doing, interruption/change

  • 공부하다가 잠들었어요.
      • I fell asleep while studying. / I was studying and then fell asleep.
Daily learner tip: If both actions continue together, use -(으)면서. If one action changes into another, use -다가.

🧩 Common Patterns

1. 음악을 들으면서... = while listening to music

  • 음악을 들으면서 공부해요. = I study while listening to music.
  • 음악을 들으면서 걸어요. = I walk while listening to music.
  • 음악을 들으면서 일해요. = I work while listening to music.

2. -면서도 = even while / despite

  • 바쁘면서도 도와줬어요. = They helped even though they were busy.
  • 피곤하면서도 끝까지 공부했어요. = I studied until the end even though I was tired.
  • 알면서도 모르는 척했어요. = They pretended not to know even though they knew.

3. -다면서요? = I heard / you said that...

This is a related but different pattern.
  • 한국어를 배운다면서요? = I heard you’re learning Korean?
  • 내일 온다면서요? = I heard you’re coming tomorrow?
  • 바쁘다면서요? = I heard you’re busy?
