Sensory adjectives let you describe the physical world in vivid detail — a 무거운 (heavy) suitcase, a 가벼운 (light) jacket, a 부드러운 (soft) blanket, a 딱딱한 (hard) chair, or a 매끄러운 (smooth) screen. Many of these words also extend to feelings and personalities, so they're worth knowing well beyond the literal sense of touch.

📖 Core Vocabulary Family

1. 무겁다 (to be heavy)

Describes something with a lot of weight — physically or emotionally.
  • 이 가방은 너무 무거워요. (This bag is too heavy.)
  • 마음이 무거워요. (My heart feels heavy. / I feel troubled.)
Grammar note: ㅂ-irregular — 무겁다 → 무거워요, 무거웠어요, 무거운 (modifier).

2. 가볍다 (to be light)

Describes something with little weight — also used for "light" topics or jokes.
  • 이 노트북은 가벼워요. (This laptop is light.)
  • 가벼운 농담을 했어요. (I made a light joke.)
Grammar note: ㅂ-irregular — 가볍다 → 가벼워요, 가벼웠어요, 가벼운 (modifier).

3. 부드럽다 (to be soft)

Describes a soft texture — also used for gentle voices, personalities, or flavors.
  • 이 베개는 정말 부드러워요. (This pillow is really soft.)
  • 부드러운 목소리로 말했어요. (S/he spoke in a soft voice.)
Grammar note: ㅂ-irregular — 부드럽다 → 부드러워요, 부드러웠어요, 부드러운 (modifier).

4. 딱딱하다 (to be hard / stiff)

Describes a hard, rigid texture — also used for stiff or formal manners.
  • 이 빵은 너무 딱딱해요. (This bread is too hard.)
  • 의자가 딱딱해서 불편해요. (The chair is hard, so it's uncomfortable.)
Grammar note: Regular 하다 adjective — 딱딱하다 → 딱딱해요, 딱딱했어요, 딱딱한 (modifier). The odd one out — no ㅂ-irregular here!

5. 매끄럽다 (to be smooth)

Describes a smooth surface — skin, roads, fabrics, or screens.
  • 피부가 매끄러워요. (The skin is smooth.)
  • 도로가 매끄럽게 포장됐어요. (The road is smoothly paved.)
Grammar note: ㅂ-irregular — 매끄럽다 → 매끄러워요, 매끄러웠어요, 매끄러운 (modifier).

  • ㅂ-irregular adjectives (무겁다, 가볍다, 부드럽다, 매끄럽다): the ㅂ becomes 우 before 어요 — 무겁다 → 무거워요.
  • 딱딱하다 is a regular 하다 adjective — 딱딱하다 → 딱딱해요.
  • Modifier form (-은/운) describes a noun: 무거운 가방 (heavy bag), 가벼운 옷 (light clothes), 부드러운 빵 (soft bread), 딱딱한 의자 (hard chair), 매끄러운 피부 (smooth skin).
  • Adverb form (-게) describes how an action is done: 부드럽게 말하다 (speak softly), 매끄럽게 움직이다 (move smoothly).
  • 무겁다/가볍다 extend metaphorically: 마음이 무겁다 (heavy heart), 가벼운 이야기 (a light/casual topic).

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  1. 무겁다, 가볍다, 부드럽다, and 매끄럽다 are all ㅂ-irregular — remember the 우 + 워요 pattern (무거워요, 가벼워요, 부드러워요, 매끄러워요).
  1. 딱딱하다 is the exception — it's a regular 하다 adjective (딱딱해요), not ㅂ-irregular.
  1. 무겁다/가볍다 aren't just about physical weight — 마음이 무겁다 (heavy-hearted) and 가벼운 마음 (light-hearted) describe feelings too.
  1. 부드럽다 (soft texture) and 딱딱하다 (hard texture) also describe personalities — 부드러운 사람 (a gentle person) vs. 딱딱한 사람 (a stiff/rigid person).
