🌈 The Big Picture

기쁘다 ("to be glad/happy") describes a momentary emotional reaction to good news or events — 소식을 듣고 기뻤어요 ("I was happy to hear the news"). 행복하다 ("to be happy") describes a deeper, more lasting state of contentment — 지금 정말 행복해요 ("I'm really happy right now [in life]"). Both conjugate regularly: 기뻐요, 행복해요. 😊

다행이에요 is one of the most useful "relief" phrases in Korean — use it anytime something could have gone wrong but didn't: missing a bus, forgetting something, bad weather clearing up. It signals empathy and relief together. 😌

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

❌ Using 행복해요 for small, momentary good news → ✅ Use 기뻐요 for reactions to specific news/events; save 행복해요 for overall life contentment.

❌ Confusing 다행이에요 with "happy" in general → ✅ 다행이에요 specifically means "relief that something bad was avoided," not general joy.

❌ Saying 기쁘다 in casual speech without conjugating → ✅ Always conjugate: 기뻐요 (polite) or 기뻐 (casual).

❌ Overusing 너무 좋아서 죽겠어요 in formal settings → ✅ This is very casual/exaggerated — use 정말 기뻐요 in more polite contexts.
