TL;DR 🦄
  • -자 can mean “as soon as…”, “right when…”, or “upon…” in a slightly more written, compact style.
  • Attach it directly to an action verb stem: 도착하다 → 도착하자, 끝나다 → 끝나자, 보다 → 보자.
  • It is close to -자마자, but -자마자 strongly emphasizes immediately, while -자 often sounds more narrative: “when/as soon as A happened, B happened.”

to hear pairs like 문이 열리자 사람들이 들어왔어요 and 문이 열리자마자 사람들이 들어왔어요. The second feels more “instantly!” ⚡

🌈 The Big Picture

-자 connects two events when the second event happens right after or right when the first event happens.

Think:
  • “as soon as”
  • “right when”
  • “upon”
  • “once”
  • “no sooner had A happened than B happened”

Examples:
  • 문이 열리자 사람들이 들어왔어요.
  • [mu-ni yeol-li-ja sa-ram-deu-ri deu-reo-wa-sseo-yo] — As soon as the door opened, people came in. 🚪
  • 비가 그치자 아이들이 밖으로 나갔어요.
  • [bi-ga geu-chi-ja a-i-deu-ri ba-kkeu-ro na-ga-sseo-yo] — When the rain stopped, the children went outside. 🌦️
  • 소식을 듣자 모두 놀랐어요.
  • [so-si-geul deut-ja mo-du nol-la-sseo-yo] — Upon hearing the news, everyone was surprised. 😮

The feeling is often story-like: one event happens, and then another event follows immediately or naturally.

🧠 Core Meaning

1. Immediate following event

Use -자 when Event B follows quickly after Event A.
  • 수업이 끝나자 학생들이 나갔어요.
  • [su-eo-bi kkeut-na-ja hak-saeng-deu-ri na-ga-sseo-yo]
As soon as class ended, the students left. 🏫
  • 버스가 멈추자 사람들이 내렸어요.
  • [beo-seu-ga meom-chu-ja sa-ram-deu-ri nae-ryeo-sseo-yo]
When the bus stopped, people got off. 🚌

2. Reaction right after seeing/hearing/noticing

-자 is common with perception verbs like 보다, 듣다, and 알다.
  • 그 말을 듣자 눈물이 났어요.
  • [geu ma-reul deut-ja nun-mu-ri na-sseo-yo]
Upon hearing those words, tears came to my eyes. 😢
  • 사진을 보자 웃음이 나왔어요.
  • [sa-ji-neul bo-ja u-seu-mi na-wa-sseo-yo]
When I saw the photo, I started laughing. 📷

3. Narrative cause-and-effect timing

Sometimes -자 feels like “when A happened, B naturally followed.”
  • 날이 밝자 새들이 울기 시작했어요.
  • [na-ri bak-ja sae-deu-ri ul-gi si-ja-kae-sseo-yo]
When day broke, birds began to sing. 🐦
  • 가격이 오르자 손님이 줄었어요.
  • [ga-gyeo-gi o-reu-ja son-ni-mi ju-reo-sseo-yo]
When prices rose, customers decreased. 📉

🎨 Formation Rules

Attach -자 directly to the verb stem.

Action/change verb stem + 자

  • 오다 → 오자 = when/as soon as someone came
  • 끝나다 → 끝나자 = when/as soon as it ended
  • 보다 → 보자 = upon seeing
  • 듣다 → 듣자 = upon hearing
  • 열리다 → 열리자 = when/as soon as it opened
  • 멈추다 → 멈추자 = when/as soon as it stopped

Tense usually goes on the final verb

  • ✅ 집에 도착하자 전화가 왔어요.
  • As soon as I arrived home, a call came.
  • ❌ 집에 도착했자 전화가 왔어요.

Often used in writing or storytelling

In everyday conversation, learners often use -자마자 more. -자 can sound more compact, written, or narrative.
⚠️
Important warning
-자 also appears in another grammar meaning “let’s,” as in 가자! = “Let’s go!” This lesson is about the connective ending -자 meaning “as soon as / when.”

🔍 -자 vs -자마자

This page was checked against the existing lesson
⚡
Sequence: Just as / Right after: -자마자
. They overlap, but they are not identical in feel.

-자마자 = immediately after

Strong “right away!” feeling.
  • 집에 오자마자 잤어요.
  • I slept as soon as I got home. 😴
    Very immediate.

-자 = when/as soon as/upon

More narrative, often used to describe a following event or reaction.
  • 집에 오자 비가 내리기 시작했어요.
  • When I got home, it started raining. 🌧️

Shortcut:
  • -자마자 = no time gap, everyday learner-safe “as soon as”
  • -자 = compact narrative “when/upon/as soon as”

🔍 -자 vs -(으)니까

-자

Focuses on timing: A happened, then B followed.
  • 문이 열리자 사람들이 들어왔어요.
  • When the door opened, people came in.

-(으)니까

Often explains reason or discovery.
  • 문을 열어 보니까 아무도 없었어요.
  • When I opened the door and checked, no one was there.

🔍 -자 vs -고 나서

-고 나서

Simple sequence: after doing A, B.
  • 밥을 먹고 나서 커피를 마셨어요.
  • After eating, I drank coffee.

-자

Immediate/narrative following event.
  • 종이 울리자 학생들이 교실로 들어갔어요.
  • When the bell rang, the students went into the classroom.

🛠️ Common Sentence Frames

Frame 1: A이/가 V-자, B이/가...

  • 비가 그치자 사람들이 밖으로 나왔어요.
  • When the rain stopped, people came outside.

Frame 2: N을/를 V-자, reaction

  • 그 소식을 듣자 모두 조용해졌어요.
  • Upon hearing the news, everyone became quiet.

Frame 3: time/change + V-자

  • 날이 어두워지자 길이 조용해졌어요.
  • When it got dark, the street became quiet.

Frame 4: A-자 B기 시작하다

  • 음악이 나오자 사람들이 춤추기 시작했어요.
  • When the music came on, people began to dance.

📚 Cross-check note

This lesson keeps -자 distinct from the already-built -자마자 page. -자마자 is the best beginner-friendly “as soon as” pattern for immediate sequence. -자 is useful at the intermediate level for more narrative sentences, written descriptions, and quick reaction chains.

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • -자 = when/as soon as/upon; compact narrative timing
  • -자마자 = immediately after; strong “right away”
  • -고 나서 = after doing; simple sequence
  • -(으)니까 = since/because/when I did and found out
  • -(으)ㄴ/는 순간 = the moment that; more explicit “moment”

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ 도착했자 → ✅ 도착하자. Do not put past tense before -자.
  • ❌ Confusing 가자! “Let’s go!” with connective 도착하자... “as soon as arriving...”
  • ❌ Using -자 for every simple “after.” Use -고 나서 for ordinary sequences.
  • ⚠️ -자 may sound more written or narrative than -자마자.
  • ⚠️ For very strong “immediately after,” -자마자 is often clearer.

🎉 Now you can tell compact timing stories: 문이 열리자 사람들이 들어왔어요, 소식을 듣자 모두 놀랐어요, 비가 그치자 아이들이 밖으로 나갔어요. Narrative timing unlocked. ⚡✨
