When you want to ask someone for help politely, -아/어 주세요 [-a/eo ju-se-yo] is useful. But sometimes you want to sound even softer, more respectful, or more like “Would you mind…?” That is where -아/어 주시겠어요? [-a/eo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] shines. ✨
 
Think of the request ladder like this:
  • 문을 열어 주세요. [mu-neul yeo-reo ju-se-yo] = Please open the door for me/us. 🚪
  • 문을 열어 주시겠어요? [mu-neul yeo-reo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] = Would you please open the door for me/us? 🚪🙏

How to choose 아 or 어
  • Many stems with ㅏ or ㅗ use -아 주시겠어요?:
    • 찾다 [chat-da] = to find / look for 🔎 → 찾아 주시겠어요? [cha-ja ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] = Would you please find it for me/us?
    • 사다 [sa-da] = to buy 🛒 → 사 주시겠어요? [sa ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] = Would you please buy it for me/us?
  • Most other stems use -어 주시겠어요?:
    • 열다 [yeol-da] = to open 🚪 → 열어 주시겠어요? [yeo-reo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] = Would you please open it for me/us?
    • 읽다 [ik-da] = to read 📚 → 읽어 주시겠어요? [il-geo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] = Would you please read it for me/us?

Nuance note: be careful with 혹시 🧭
  • 혹시 [hok-si] = by any chance / perhaps. It does not automatically make every -아/어 주시겠어요? request sound better.
  • Avoid patterns like 혹시 이름을 써 주시겠어요? [hok-si i-reu-meul sseo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] for a normal request. It can sound like “might you write down your name?” and the request feels odd.
  • Use 혹시 more naturally with a condition or availability check, such as 혹시 괜찮으시면 알려 주시겠어요? [hok-si gwaen-cha-neu-si-myeon al-lyeo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] = If it’s okay with you, could you please let me know?

  • 혹시 괜찮으시면 알려 주시겠어요? [hok-si gwaen-cha-neu-si-myeon al-lyeo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] = If it’s okay with you, could you please let me know? 📩
      • 혹시 [hok-si] works naturally here because it is paired with 괜찮으시면 [gwaen-cha-neu-si-myeon] = if it is okay with you; 알려 [al-lyeo] = let know / tell.
 
3. Asking for explanation
  • 문법을 설명해 주시겠어요? [mun-beo-beul seol-myeong-hae ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] = Would you please explain the grammar for me/us? 🧠
      • 문법을 [mun-beo-beul] = grammar as the object; 설명해 [seol-myeong-hae] = explain.

The main special shapes are the same ones from -아/어 주다:

  • 쓰다 → 써 주시겠어요? [sseu-da → sseo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] = Would you please write it for me/us?

  • ❌ 사진을 찍아 주시겠어요? [sa-ji-neul jji-ga ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] → ✅ 사진을 찍어 주시겠어요? [sa-ji-neul jji-geo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] — 찍다 uses -어.
  • ❌ 설명하 주시겠어요? [seol-myeong-ha ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] → ✅ 설명해 주시겠어요? [seol-myeong-hae ju-si-ge-sseo-yo] — 하다 becomes 해.
  • ⚠️ Do not use 혹시 as a blanket softener before every 주시겠어요? request. For example, 혹시 이름을 써 주시겠어요? can sound awkward, like “might you write down your name?” Use 혹시 괜찮으시면 알려 주시겠어요? only in a specific “if it’s okay with you” context.
