1. Action verbs

• 받침 없는 동사 어간 + ㄴ다면서요? = I heard someone does/is doing…?

• 받침 있는 동사 어간 + 는다면서요? = I heard someone does/is doing…?

• 가다 → 간다면서요? [ga-da → gan-da-myeon-seo-yo] = I heard they’re going?

• 오다 → 온다면서요? [o-da → on-da-myeon-seo-yo] = I heard they’re coming?

• 먹다 → 먹는다면서요? [meok-da → meong-neun-da-myeon-seo-yo] = I heard they eat/are eating?

🧩 General Formation Rule

• Action verb, no batchim: 가다 → 간다면서요?

• Action verb, with batchim: 먹다 → 먹는다면서요?

• Descriptive verb/adjective: 춥다 → 춥다면서요?

• Noun with batchim: 학생 → 학생이라면서요?

• Noun without batchim: 의사 → 의사라면서요?

• Past: 갔다면서요? [gat-da-myeon-seo-yo] = I heard they went?

• Future/plan: 갈 거라면서요? [gal geo-ra-myeon-seo-yo] = I heard they’re going to go?

🚨 Nuance Rule: Not All “Discovery” Is the Same

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

• ❌ Using -다면서요? for your own direct discovery → ✅ use -더라고요.

• ❌ 먹다면서요? for “I heard they eat?” → ✅ 먹는다면서요? — action verbs with batchim use -는다.

• ❌ 가다면서요? for present “I heard they go?” → ✅ 간다면서요? — action verbs without batchim use -ㄴ다.

• ❌ 학생라면서요? → ✅ 학생이라면서요? — noun with batchim uses 이라면서요?.
