TL;DR 🦄
- 🔥 -(으)ㄹ망정 [-(eu)l-mang-jeong] means even if / even though / even if it means..., often with a strong “I would rather accept A than do B” feeling.
- 🛡️ It usually concedes something unpleasant or extreme, then protects a firm decision: 실패할망정 포기하지 않겠습니다. [sil-pae-hal-mang-jeong po-gi-ha-ji an-ket-seum-ni-da] = Even if I fail, I will not give up.
- ✍️ Write it attached as one ending: 떨어질망정, not 떨어질 망정. This grammar is dramatic; it does not like extra space. 🧱

🌈 The Big Picture
-(으)ㄹ망정 is a high-level concession ending. It admits that something difficult, undesirable, or extreme may happen, but says the following clause still stands.
Think:
- Even if A happens, B will still be true.
- I may accept A, but I will not accept B.
- I would rather A than B.
It often appears with strong commitment, pride, refusal, principle, or sacrifice. It is more formal, literary, and emphatic than everyday -아/어도.
Examples:
- 시험에 떨어질망정 남의 것을 베끼지는 않겠습니다.
[si-heo-me tteo-reo-jil-mang-jeong na-me geo-seul be-kki-ji-neun an-ket-seum-ni-da]
Even if I fail the exam, I will not copy someone else’s work. 🧾
시험에 떨어지다 = to fail an exam; 남의 것 = someone else’s thing; 베끼다 = to copy.
- 손해를 볼망정 거짓말은 하지 않겠어요.
[son-hae-reul bol-mang-jeong geo-jin-ma-reun ha-ji an-ke-sseo-yo]
Even if I take a loss, I will not lie. ⚖️
손해를 보다 = to take a loss; 거짓말 = lie.
- 늦게 끝날망정 대충 하지는 않겠습니다.
[neut-ge kkeut-nal-mang-jeong dae-chung ha-ji-neun an-ket-seum-ni-da]
Even if it ends late, I will not do it roughly. 🛠️
늦게 = late; 대충 하다 = to do roughly / half-heartedly.
This grammar is not the casual “whatever, it’s fine” type of concession. It has teeth. The speaker is saying: “I can accept this cost, but I will not cross that line.” 🦁
🎨 The Core -(으)ㄹ망정 Family
1. Verb + -(으)ㄹ망정
Use it when accepting the possibility of an action, result, or sacrifice.
- 실패하다 → 실패할망정 [sil-pae-hal-mang-jeong] — even if someone fails
- 손해를 보다 → 손해를 볼망정 [son-hae-reul bol-mang-jeong] — even if someone takes a loss
- 잃다 → 잃을망정 [i-reul-mang-jeong] — even if someone loses
- 죽다 → 죽을망정 [ju-geul-mang-jeong] — even if someone dies / even if it means dying
2. Descriptive verb/adjective + -(으)ㄹ망정
Use it when accepting a difficult state.
- 힘들다 → 힘들망정 [him-deul-mang-jeong] — even if it is hard
- 어렵다 → 어려울망정 [eo-ryeo-ul-mang-jeong] — even if it is difficult
- 작다 → 작을망정 [ja-geul-mang-jeong] — even if it is small
- 가난하다 → 가난할망정 [ga-nan-hal-mang-jeong] — even if someone is poor
3. Noun + 일망정
Use it when the conceded idea is a noun identity. This sounds formal/literary.
- 작은 도움일망정 [ja-geun do-u-mil-mang-jeong] — even if it is small help
- 초보자일망정 [cho-bo-ja-il-mang-jeong] — even if someone is a beginner
- 낡은 집일망정 [nal-geun ji-bil-mang-jeong] — even if it is an old house
4. 차라리 ... -(으)ㄹ망정
차라리 [cha-ra-ri] means rather / preferably. It often appears with -(으)ㄹ망정 to mean I would rather A than B.
- 차라리 굶을망정 남에게 구걸하지 않겠습니다.
[cha-ra-ri gul-meul-mang-jeong na-me-ge gu-geol-ha-ji an-ket-seum-ni-da]
I would rather starve than beg from others. 🍚
- 차라리 혼자 할망정 원칙을 버리지는 않겠습니다.
[cha-ra-ri hon-ja hal-mang-jeong won-chi-geul beo-ri-ji-neun an-ket-seum-ni-da]
I would rather do it alone than abandon my principles. ⚖️
🛠️ How It Works in a Sentence
The first clause is usually the cost, sacrifice, or bad possibility. The second clause is the line the speaker refuses to cross.
1. Cost accepted, principle protected
- 손해를 볼망정 부정한 방법은 쓰지 않겠습니다.
[son-hae-reul bol-mang-jeong bu-jeong-han bang-beo-beun sseu-ji an-ket-seum-ni-da]
Even if I take a loss, I will not use dishonest methods. ⚖️
부정한 = dishonest; 방법 = method; 쓰다 = to use.
2. Hardship accepted, commitment kept
- 길이 멀망정 직접 찾아가겠습니다.
[gi-ri meol-mang-jeong jik-jeop cha-ja-ga-get-seum-ni-da]
Even if the road is far, I will go there in person. 🛣️
길 = road/way; 멀다 = to be far; 직접 = directly/in person.
3. Pride or emotional refusal
- 낡은 집일망정 우리에게는 소중한 곳입니다.
[nal-geun ji-bil-mang-jeong u-ri-e-ge-neun so-jung-han go-sim-ni-da]
Even if it is an old house, it is a precious place to us. 🏠
낡다 = to be old/worn; 소중하다 = to be precious.
🧩 General Formation Rule
Attach -(으)ㄹ망정 to the stem. It behaves like other -(으)ㄹ-based endings.
1. Vowel-ending stem + ㄹ망정
- 가다 → 갈망정 — even if someone goes
- 보다 → 볼망정 — even if someone sees/tries
- 하다 → 할망정 — even if someone does
- 포기하다 → 포기할망정 — even if someone gives up
2. Consonant-ending stem + 을망정
- 먹다 → 먹을망정 — even if someone eats
- 잃다 → 잃을망정 — even if someone loses
- 받다 → 받을망정 — even if someone receives
- 늦다 → 늦을망정 — even if someone is late
3. ㄹ-ending stem + 망정
Keep the stem-final ㄹ and attach 망정. Do not add another 을.
- 살다 → 살망정 — even if someone lives
- 만들다 → 만들망정 — even if someone makes it
- 멀다 → 멀망정 — even if it is far
4. Nouns + 일망정
- 초보자 → 초보자일망정 — even if someone is a beginner
- 작은 실수 → 작은 실수일망정 — even if it is a small mistake
- 낡은 집 → 낡은 집일망정 — even if it is an old house
🚨 Exception Rule(s)
- ㅂ-irregular descriptive verbs usually change before -(으)ㄹ:
- 어렵다 → 어려울망정 — even if it is difficult
- 춥다 → 추울망정 — even if it is cold
- 무겁다 → 무거울망정 — even if it is heavy
- ㄹ-ending stems do not add 을:
- ✅ 살망정, 만들망정, 멀망정
- ❌ 살을망정, 만들을망정, 멀을망정
- Past meaning can use -았/었을망정, especially in formal writing:
- 늦었을망정 약속을 잊은 것은 아닙니다.
[neu-jeo-sseul-mang-jeong yak-so-geul i-jeun geo-seun a-nim-ni-da]
Even if I was late, it is not that I forgot the promise.
- Spacing matters: this is an ending, so write it attached.
- ✅ 떨어질망정
- ❌ 떨어질 망정
📚 Cross-check note
The meaning and spelling of -ㄹ망정/-을망정 were cross-checked against Korean.go.kr guidance. Official examples describe it as an ending used when acknowledging the preceding fact and connecting a contrasting fact, and show attached spelling such as 시험에 떨어질망정 남의 것을 베끼지는 않겠다 and 차라리 얼어 죽을망정 겻불은 아니 쬐겠다. ✅
🪞 Synonym Alert
These are all concession neighbors, but they do different jobs:
- -아/어도 — everyday even if / even though 🌧️
- 아무리 -아/어도 — no matter how / no matter how much 🔁
- -더라도 — stronger or more hypothetical even if 💪
- -(으)ㄹ지라도 — formal/literary even if; polished concession 🏛️
- -(으)ㄹ지언정 — even if it means; resolute, value-based concession 🛡️
- -(으)ㄹ망정 — even if / I would rather A than B; strong refusal, sacrifice, or contrast 🔥
Quick distinction:
- 어려워도 하겠습니다. — Everyday: Even if it is hard, I’ll do it.
- 어려울지라도 하겠습니다. — Formal: Even if it is difficult, I will do it.
- 어려울지언정 포기하지 않겠습니다. — Resolute: Even if it is difficult, I will not give up.
- 어려울망정 부끄러운 일은 하지 않겠습니다. — Strong line: Even if it is difficult, I will not do something shameful.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ 먹망정 → ✅ 먹을망정 — consonant stem needs 을.
- ❌ 가을망정 → ✅ 갈망정 — vowel stem uses ㄹ망정.
- ❌ 멀을망정 → ✅ 멀망정 — ㄹ-ending stem keeps ㄹ.
- ❌ 초보자망정 → ✅ 초보자일망정 — nouns use 일망정.
- ❌ 떨어질 망정 → ✅ 떨어질망정 — write the ending attached.
- ⚠️ Do not use -(으)ㄹ망정 for small casual “even if” moments unless you want to sound dramatic. For daily speech, use -아/어도.
🔥 Bottom line: -(으)ㄹ망정 is for strong “even if it means A, I will not do B” sentences. It protects a principle, refusal, promise, or pride — with a little literary thunder. ⚡
