IS #158 β Receiving Feedback with Professional Grace
How to hear criticism, acknowledge it, and respond in Korean without becoming defensive or overly self-critical.
Iru Helper Note
In Korean professional culture, how you receive feedback says as much about your character as how you give it. The most respected response shows you truly heard, not just that you accepted.
λ§μν΄ μ£Όμ
μ κ°μ¬ν΄μ. κΌ λ°μνκ² μ΅λλ€.
(Thank you for telling me. I'll definitely incorporate it.)
Β
π What You'll Learn Today
Receiving feedback well in Korean is a distinct skill. The best responses do three things: acknowledge that you heard (without being defensive), show that you understand the concern, and signal that you'll act on it. This lesson gives you the expressions to receive even tough feedback gracefully β making you look mature, self-aware, and professional in any Korean setting.
π Receiving Feedback Expressions
Expression | Meaning | Notes |
λ§μν΄ μ£Όμ
μ κ°μ¬ν΄μ | Thank you for telling me | Warmest opener for feedback |
κΌ λ°μνκ² μ΅λλ€ | I'll definitely incorporate it | Commitment to act |
μ’μ νΌλλ°±μ΄μμ | That's good feedback | Validates the input |
μμΌλ‘ λ μ κ²½ μ°κ² μ΅λλ€ | I'll pay more attention going forward | Commitment to improvement |
μ κ° λμ³€λ λΆλΆμ΄λ€μ | That's something I missed | Honest self-acknowledgment |
μΆ©λΆν μ΄ν΄νμ΅λλ€ | I fully understand | Shows you got the message |
λ°μ±νκ² μ΅λλ€ | I'll reflect on this / take it to heart | Korean-specific ownership phrase |
λ μν μ μλ κΈ°νλ‘ μΌκ² μ΅λλ€ | I'll take this as an opportunity to do better | Growth-oriented response |
κ·Έ λΆλΆμ λν΄ λ μκ°ν΄ λ³Όκ²μ | I'll think more about that point | Shows genuine reflection |
μμ§νκ² λ§μν΄ μ£Όμ
μ κ°μ¬ν΄μ | Thank you for speaking honestly | For harder feedback |
μ΄λ»κ² κ°μ νλ©΄ μ’μκΉμ? | How do you think I could improve? | Invites constructive guidance |
λ§λ λ§μμ΄μμ | That's a fair point / You're right | Validates without collapsing |
μμΌλ‘ μ£Όμνκ² μ΅λλ€ | I'll be careful going forward | Commitment to caution |
λ λ°μ νλ κ³κΈ°λ‘ μΌκ² μ΅λλ€ | I'll use this as a chance to grow | Reframes criticism as opportunity |
π‘ Key pattern: λ§μν΄ μ£Όμ
Thank β Acknowledge β Commit.
π¬ Conversations in Action
Receiving a critique from a manager:
μμ¬: μ΄λ² λ³΄κ³ μλ λ°μ΄ν°κ° μ’ λΆμ‘±νμ΄μ.
(Manager: This report was a bit short on data.)
μ§μ: λ§λ λ§μμ΄μμ. μ κ° λμ³€λ λΆλΆμ΄λ€μ. μμΌλ‘ λ μ κ²½ μ°κ² μ΅λλ€. λ§μν΄ μ£Όμ
μ κ°μ¬ν΄μ.
(Employee: That's a fair point. That's something I missed. I'll pay more attention going forward. Thank you for telling me.)
Receiving harder feedback:
μμ¬: λ°ν λ μμ κ°μ΄ μ’ λΆμ‘±ν΄ 보μμ΄μ.
(Manager: You seemed a bit lacking in confidence during the presentation.)
μ§μ: μμ§νκ² λ§μν΄ μ£Όμ
μ κ°μ¬ν΄μ. λ λ°μ νλ κ³κΈ°λ‘ μΌκ² μ΅λλ€. μ΄λ»κ² κ°μ νλ©΄ μ’μκΉμ?
(Employee: Thank you for speaking honestly. I'll use this as a chance to grow. How do you think I could improve?)
π Cultural Note β λ°μ± and Professional Maturity
Korean professional culture highly values λ°μ± (genuine reflection and self-correction). Saying λ°μ±νκ² μ΅λλ€ is not the same as apologizing β it's a signal that you're taking the feedback seriously and committing to internal growth. Combined with asking μ΄λ»κ² κ°μ νλ©΄ μ’μκΉμ? (how can I improve?), it signals a level of professional maturity that seniors deeply respect. Defensive responses, by contrast, damage trust regardless of whether you were technically right.

Use λ°μνκ² μ΅λλ€ when you're committing to change your output. Use λ°μ±νκ² μ΅λλ€ when you're acknowledging a character or behavior issue.

Pitfall: Being defensive
Responding to feedback with "κ·Έλ°λ°..." or immediately explaining yourself reads as defensive in Korean culture. Even if you disagree, lead with acknowledgment first. You can clarify your perspective after β but only after showing you truly heard the feedback.
