The speaker is usually sharing a discovery with the listener, often with a small feeling of surprise, realization, or “by the way, I noticed…”

The basic sentence logic:
Thing/person you discovered + verb/adjective/noun + -더라고요

Use -았/었더라고요 when the thing was already completed before you noticed it, or when that completed result matters.

- 가격이 올랐더라고요.

🚨 Nuance: Direct Experience Matters
-더라고요 works best when the speaker has direct evidence.
✅ Good:
- 먹어 보니까 맛있더라고요.
[meo-geo bo-ni-kka ma-sit-deo-ra-go-yo] — I tried it and found it tasty.
- 가 보니까 사람이 많더라고요.
[ga bo-ni-kka sa-ra-mi man-teo-ra-go-yo] — I went and saw that there were many people.
- 확인해 보니까 문이 닫혀 있더라고요.

Less natural if you only heard it from someone else:
- 친구가 맛있대요.

If you didn’t personally experience it, use hearsay forms like -대요 [-dae-yo] instead.

Often shares an observation while expecting a reaction, correction, or follow-up from the listener.

- ❌ Forgetting the discovery feeling → 맛있었어요 is just “it was tasty”; 맛있더라고요 is “I tried it and found it tasty.”
- ❌ Confusing -더라고요 with -던데요 → -던데요 often invites the listener’s response or sets up contrast.
- ❌ Thinking it always means surprise → it can show surprise, but the core is remembered direct discovery.
