🧩 General Formation Rule

Add 면 안 돼요 after vowel-ending stems. Add 으면 안 돼요 after most consonant-ending stems.

  • 오다 → 오면 안 돼요 [o-da → o-myeon an dwae-yo] = You must not come. ✅

🚨 Small Exception / Shape Notes

  • Vowel-ending stems use 면: 가다 → 가면 안 돼요, 오다 → 오면 안 돼요.
  • Consonant-ending stems usually use 으면: 먹다 → 먹으면 안 돼요, 앉다 → 앉으면 안 돼요.
  • ㄹ-ending stems use 면: 열다 → 열면 안 돼요 [yeol-myeon an dwae-yo] = You must not open it.
  • 되다 contracts in everyday speech: 되어요 → 돼요. So 안 되어요 becomes 안 돼요.
  • Keep the spacing: 안 돼요, not 안돼요 in this pattern.
