Natural Reactions to Surprise or Shock
React in the moment like a native speaker — not with silence or English.
🔊
Iru Helper Note
Korean has a rich set of instant reaction words that carry real emotional weight when used naturally.
진짜요? 대박! 어떻게요?
(Really? Wow! How?)

🎯 What You'll Learn Today

When something surprising or shocking happens in conversation, native Korean speakers don't pause to construct a sentence — they react instinctively with short expressions. Today you'll learn the most natural surprise and shock reactions in Korean so you can respond in the moment, not after it.

📌 Surprise & Shock Reactions

Expression
Literal / Feeling
When to Use
진짜요?
Really?
Disbelief or wanting confirmation
대박!
Jackpot! / Wow!
Strong positive or surprising news
어머! / 어머나!
Oh my!
Light shock or surprise (especially women)
세상에!
Oh my goodness! / Good heavens!
Bigger shock or disbelief
아, 진짜?
Oh, really?
Casual disbelief (informal)
어떻게요?
How? / How is that possible?
Incredulity at a surprising fact
말도 안 돼!
That's impossible! / No way!
Strong disbelief
헐!
Wow... / What the...
Shock, dismay, or surprise (casual)
설마!
No way! / Surely not!
Skeptical surprise
와, 대단해요!
Wow, that's impressive!
Positive surprise at an achievement
너무 놀랐어요
I was so surprised
After the moment, reflecting on shock
몰랐어요
I didn't know
Expressing you had no idea
💡 Key pattern: Layer reactions naturally: 진짜요? + 어떻게요? or 대박! + 말도 안 돼! Sound more engaged by stacking two short reactions before diving into a full sentence.

💬 Conversations in Action

Conversation 1 — Good news
A: 저 이번에 회사에 합격했어요!
(I passed the company interview!)
B: 진짜요? 대박! 어떻게요? 언제 결과 나왔어요?
(Really? Wow! How? When did the result come out?)
A: 오늘 아침에 연락 왔어요.
(I got the notification this morning.)
B: 와, 대단해요! 너무 잘됐다.
(Wow, that's impressive! I'm so glad for you.)
Conversation 2 — Shocking news
A: 민지가 갑자기 회사 그만뒀대요.
(Apparently Minji suddenly quit her job.)
B: 세상에! 말도 안 돼. 왜요?
(Good heavens! That can't be. Why?)
A: 저도 자세히는 몰라요. 그냥 그만뒀다고 했어요.
(I don't know the details either. They just said she quit.)
B: 헐… 너무 놀랐어요. 진짜 몰랐어요.
(Wow… I was so surprised. I really had no idea.)

🌏 Cultural Note — Emotional Expression in Korean

Korean reaction words carry gender and age nuances. 어머! and 어머나! are used predominantly by women and sound very natural from them; men more often use 야!, 헐!, or 세상에!. 헐 is very casual and common among younger speakers. 대박 is universally used across ages for strong positive or surprising news. In formal settings, tone down to 그렇군요 (I see) or 정말요? (Really?) — save the stronger reactions for friends.
