Politely Disagreeing: 제 생각은 좀 달라요
Korean disagreement is an art — softening always matters more than the words themselves.
Iru Helper Note
In Korean, jumping to "no" or saying 틀렸어요 (you're wrong) can feel abrupt or even rude. Korean speakers soften disagreement by framing it as a personal difference in thinking rather than a correction of the other person.
제 생각은 좀 달라요.
(My thinking is a little different.)
🗣️ What You'll Learn Today
In Korean, how you frame a disagreement matters more than the disagreement itself. Today you'll master five natural expressions that let you say "I see it differently" without sounding blunt or confrontational. You'll also learn why the small word 좀 (a little) is one of the most important words in polite Korean conversation.
📌 Five Ways to Politely Disagree
Expression | Literal Meaning | When to Use |
제 생각은 좀 달라요 | My thinking is a little different | Everyday, all-purpose |
저는 조금 다르게 생각해요 | I think about it a bit differently | When emphasizing your own view |
그 부분은 좀 다른 것 같아요 | I think that part is a little different | When disagreeing with one specific point |
제 의견은 좀 달라요 | My opinion is a little different | Slightly more formal |
저는 동의하기 어렵네요 | I find it hard to agree | Clearer disagreement, still polite |
💡 Key pattern: [Subject] + 은/는 + 좀 달라요 → "[Subject] is a little different"
The softener 좀 (a little) is essential. It keeps the disagreement from feeling like a rejection. In casual conversation, always include it unless you specifically need to be direct.
Grammar note:
- 제 = my (polite; short for 나의)
- 생각 = thought / thinking / view
- 달라요 = polite present of 다르다 (to be different)
- 다르게 = differently (adverb form of 다르다)
💬 Conversations in Action
Mini-Dialogue 1 — At a café, talking about work styles
A: 요즘 재택근무가 훨씬 효율적인 것 같아요.
B: 저는 좀 다르게 생각해요. 저는 사무실에서 일할 때 집중이 더 잘 돼요.
A: 아, 그렇군요. 사람마다 다른 것 같아요.
(A: I think working from home is much more efficient these days.
B: I think about it a bit differently. I concentrate better when working in the office.
A: Oh, I see. I guess it differs from person to person.)
Mini-Dialogue 2 — Discussing a movie
A: 그 영화 정말 재미있지 않았어요?
B: 음, 제 생각은 좀 달라요. 스토리가 너무 느린 것 같았어요.
A: 아, 저는 그 부분이 좋았는데요. 각자 취향이 있는 것 같아요.
(A: Wasn't that movie really fun?
B: Hmm, my thinking is a little different. The story felt a bit too slow.
A: Oh, I liked that part. I guess everyone has their own taste.)
🌏 Cultural Note — 눈치 and Disagreement in Korean
눈치 (nunchi) is the Korean concept of reading the social atmosphere and adjusting how you communicate. When it comes to disagreement, 눈치 means knowing how to voice a different view, not just whether to.
- 좀, 약간, 조금 (a little, slightly) act as social softeners — use them freely
- Avoid 틀렸어요 (you're wrong) in casual settings — it sounds like a judgment
- Starting with 저는... (I think / For me...) frames disagreement as your personal view, not a correction
- A brief acknowledgment — even 그렇군요... (I see...) — before your contrasting view makes the whole exchange feel natural

Vocabulary Cheat Sheet
Korean | English |
생각 | thought, thinking |
의견 | opinion |
동의하다 | to agree |
달라요 | is different |
다르게 | differently |
좀 / 조금 | a little, somewhat |
빡빡하다 | to be tight, hectic |
오히려 | rather, on the contrary |
Grammar Tip
Notice how 것 같아요 (it seems / I think) often follows the disagreement expression. This double softening — 좀 달라요 + -것 같아요 — is very natural in Korean speech. You are not just saying "it is different" — you are saying "it seems a bit different to me," which is much easier for the listener to receive.
