Persuading Someone to See Your Point
How to make your case, give reasons, and bring someone around โ politely
Iru Helper Note
Persuasion in Korean isn't about being aggressive โ it's about being clear, reasoned, and considerate. The goal is to help someone see your perspective while making it easy for them to agree. Today you'll learn how to make a case, give examples, and bring someone around naturally.
์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ณด๋ฉด ์ด๋จ๊น์? ์ ์๊ฐ์๋ ์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ด ๋ ํจ๊ณผ์ ์ธ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์.
(How about thinking about it this way? I think this approach seems more effective.)
ย
๐ก What You'll Learn Today
You can share opinions, add information, and partially agree. Now it's time to put all of that together to persuade. Today's lesson covers how to present your view, back it up with reasons and examples, and frame your suggestion so the other person feels genuinely considered โ not pressured.
๐ Persuasion Expressions
Setting Up Your Case
- ์๋ํ๋ฉด... โ Because... / The reason is...
โ Used to introduce the reason for your view. Always followed by the reason.
โ ์ ์๊ฐ์๋ ์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ด ๋์์. ์๋ํ๋ฉด ์๊ฐ์ด ๋ ๊ฑธ๋ฆฌ๊ฑฐ๋ ์.
โ (I think this approach is better. Because it takes less time.)
- ์๋ฅผ ๋ค์ด... โ For example...
โ Used to add a concrete example to your argument.
โ ์๋ฅผ ๋ค์ด, ์ ๋ ์ฒ์์๋ ์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ผ๋ก ํ๋๋ฐ ํจ์ฌ ๋น ๋ฅด๊ฒ ๋์ด์.
โ (For example, I also used this method at first and things went much faster.)
- ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ณด๋ฉด... โ If you think about it this way...
โ Invites the other person to try your perspective without forcing it.
Making Your Suggestion
- ์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ด ๋ ํจ๊ณผ์ ์ธ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. โ I think this approach seems more effective.
- ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ํ๋ฉด ์ด๋จ๊น์? โ How about doing it this way? (combines persuasion + soft suggestion)
- ํ๋ฒ ํด๋ด๋ ๋์์ง ์์ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. โ I don't think it would hurt to try it once.
โ Low-pressure. Great for when someone is hesitant.
- ํ๋ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ด์. โ Think about it for a moment.
โ Gentle invitation to consider your point. Not pushy.
Acknowledging Their View First
- ์ผ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ ์์ด์, ๊ทธ๋ ์ง๋ง... โ (From lesson 2) That makes sense, but...
- ์ด๋ ์ ๋๋ ๋์ํด์, ๋ค๋ง... โ (From lesson 2) I partly agree, but...
๐ก Key strategy: The most effective Korean persuasion starts by acknowledging the other person's view, then presenting your case with reasons and examples. Going straight to "but you should do X" sounds abrupt.
๐ฌ Conversations in Action
Dialogue 1 โ Suggesting a different method at work
๋ฏผ์ค: ์ง๊ธ ๋ฐฉ์์ผ๋ก ๊ณ์ ํ ๊ฒ์.
(I'll keep going with the current method.)
(That makes sense. But how about thinking about it this way? Because using this method could cut the time in half. I don't think it would hurt to try.)
Dialogue 2 โ Persuading a friend to try a new approach
์์: ์ ๋ ์ด๋ฏธ ๋ค๋ฅธ ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ผ๋ก ํ๊ณ ์์ด์.
(I'm already doing it another way.)
๋์ค: ์ด๋ ์ ๋๋ ๋์ํด์. ๋ค๋ง ์๋ฅผ ๋ค์ด, ์ ์๊ฐ์๋ ์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ด ๋ ํจ๊ณผ์ ์ธ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. ๊ฒ๋ค๊ฐ ๋น์ฉ๋ ์ ๊ฒ ๋ค๊ฑฐ๋ ์.
(I partly agree. But for example, I think this method seems more effective. Furthermore, it also costs less.)
๐ Cultural Note โ Persuasion and Hierarchy in Korean Communication
In Korean workplaces and social settings, persuading someone of higher rank requires a different approach than persuading a peer. With seniors, it's important to frame your suggestion as a question (์ด๋ ๊ฒ ํ๋ฉด ์ด๋จ๊น์?) rather than a declaration. With peers, you can be slightly more direct. In both cases, starting with acknowledgment (์ผ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ ์์ด์, ๊ทธ๋ ์ง๋ง...) shows respect. The most persuasive Koreans are often the ones who seem the least pushy โ they help the other person arrive at the conclusion themselves.
<summary>Try This Speaking Exercise
For each situation, make your case using today's persuasion expressions. A natural sample response is inside each toggle.
A. A colleague wants to send a long email. You think a quick call would be faster. Make your case.
<summary>Answer
์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ณด๋ฉด ์ด๋จ๊น์? ์๋ํ๋ฉด ์ ํ๋ก ํ๋ฉด ํจ์ฌ ๋น ๋ฅผ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ๊ฑฐ๋ ์. ํ๋ฒ ํด๋ด๋ ๋์์ง ์์ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. (How about thinking about it this way? Because doing it by phone would probably be much faster. I don't think it would hurt to try.)

B. A friend wants to study alone. You think studying with a partner is more effective. Persuade them gently.
<summary>Answer
์ด๋ ์ ๋๋ ๋์ํด์. ๋ค๋ง ์ ์๊ฐ์๋ ๊ฐ์ด ๊ณต๋ถํ๋ ๊ฒ ๋ ํจ๊ณผ์ ์ธ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. ์๋ํ๋ฉด ์๋ก ์ค๋ช

Persuasion Formula
The most natural Korean persuasion follows this pattern: (1) Acknowledge their view (์ผ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ ์์ด์ / ์ด๋ ์ ๋๋ ๋์ํด์). (2) Introduce your case (์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ณด๋ฉด / ์๋ํ๋ฉด). (3) Add a reason or example (์๋ํ๋ฉด / ์๋ฅผ ๋ค์ด). (4) Close with a soft invitation (ํ๋ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ด์ / ํ๋ฒ ํด๋ด๋ ๋์์ง ์์ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์).

Want more reps?
Pick any opinion you've expressed this week and practice backing it up with ์๋ํ๋ฉด and ์๋ฅผ ๋ค์ด. Being able to give reasons for your views is one of the most important steps from intermediate to advanced Korean conversation.

๐ฆ Practice Hub โ ์ค๋ (Persuasion)
Exercise 1 โ Choose the Right Expression
Situation: Each item below gives you a persuasion moment. Choose the most natural expression from the box on the right.
A. You want to start your reason. Which expression do you use?
<summary>Answer
์๋ํ๋ฉด (Because / The reason is)
B. You want to give a concrete example to back up your point.
<summary>Answer
์๋ฅผ ๋ค์ด (For example)
C. You want to invite someone to consider your perspective without pressure.
<summary>Answer
์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ณด๋ฉด ์ด๋จ๊น์? (How about thinking about it this way?)
D. You want to say your suggestion is more effective.
<summary>Answer
์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ด ๋ ํจ๊ณผ์ ์ธ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. (I think this method seems more effective.)
E. Someone is hesitant. You want to say it's low-risk to just try.
<summary>Answer
ํ๋ฒ ํด๋ด๋ ๋์์ง ์์ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. (I don't think it would hurt to try.)
F. You want to gently invite someone to take a moment and consider your point.

Quick Reference
Expression | Use |
์๋ํ๋ฉด | Introduce your reason |
์๋ฅผ ๋ค์ด | Give a concrete example |
์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ณด๋ฉด ์ด๋จ๊น์? | Invite a new perspective |
์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ด ๋ ํจ๊ณผ์ ์ธ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์ | Say your way is better |

ํ๋ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ด์ | Gentle invite to consider |
์ด๋ ๊ฒ ํ๋ฉด ์ด๋จ๊น์? | Soft proposal |
Pitfall
Don't jump straight into your argument. Starting with ์๋ํ๋ฉด without first acknowledging the other person sounds blunt. Pair it with ์ผ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ ์์ด์, ๊ทธ๋ ์ง๋ง or ์ด๋ ์ ๋๋ ๋์ํด์, ๋ค๋ง first.
Exercise 2 โ Korean โ English Translation
Translate these persuasion sentences into natural English.

Cheat Sheet
Korean | English |
์๋ํ๋ฉด ~๊ฑฐ๋ ์ | Because ~ (the reason is) |
์๋ฅผ ๋ค์ด | For example |
์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ณด๋ฉด | If you think about it this way |
ํ๋ฒ ํด๋ด๋ ๋์์ง ์์ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์ | It wouldn't hurt to try |
๊ฒ๋ค๊ฐ | Furthermore |
๊ฒฐ๊ตญ์๋ | In the end / Ultimately |
Grammar Tip
์๋ํ๋ฉด is usually followed by ~๊ฑฐ๋ ์ or ~๊ธฐ ๋๋ฌธ์ด์์ at the end of the reason clause. This makes the reason feel complete and natural. ์๋ํ๋ฉด ์๊ฐ์ด ๊ฑธ๋ฆฌ๊ฑฐ๋ ์ = Because it takes time (and that's why I said what I said).
Exercise 3 โ Complete the Sentence
Complete each persuasion sentence naturally. Suggested answers are inside the toggles.

<summary>Answer
์๋ํ๋ฉด ์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ด ๋ ๋น ๋ฅด๊ณ ํจ์จ์ ์ด๊ฑฐ๋ ์. (Because this method is faster and more efficient.)
C. ์๋ฅผ ๋ค์ด, ์ง๋๋ฒ์๋ ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ํ์ ๋ ___.

<summary>Answer
๊ฒ๋ค๊ฐ ์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ ์ฐ๋ฉด ์ค์๋ ์ค์ด๋ค ์ ์์ด์. (Furthermore, using this method can also reduce mistakes.)
G. ์ ์๊ฐ์๋ ์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ด ___ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์.

I. ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ํ๋ฉด ___ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์?
<summary>Answer
์ด๋ ๊ฒ ํ๋ฉด ์ด๋จ๊น์? (How about doing it this way?)
J. ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ณด๋ฉด, ๊ฒฐ๊ตญ์๋ ___.
<summary>Answer
์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ณด๋ฉด, ๊ฒฐ๊ตญ์๋ ์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฒ์ด ๋ ํธํ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. (If you think about it this way, this method will probably be more convenient in the end.)
Sentence Starters
Starter | Pattern |
Production Tip
Don't try to say everything at once. A natural Korean persuasion is two or three sentences: acknowledge โ reason โ soft close. Practice each part separately until each one flows on its own.
Exercise 4 โ Dialogue Completion
Fill in the blank in each dialogue with the most natural persuasion expression.

Conversation Tip
In Korean conversations, a short pause before making your case signals respect. After saying ์ผ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ ์์ด์, take a brief beat โ it signals you genuinely considered their view before responding.
Exercise 5 โ Free Speaking Practice
Answer each prompt aloud in Korean, using at least two expressions from this lesson.
A. A friend wants to stay home and study alone. Persuade them to try a study cafรฉ instead.
<summary>Sample Answer
์ด๋ ์ ๋๋ ๋์ํด์. ๋ค๋ง ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ณด๋ฉด ์ด๋จ๊น์? ์๋ํ๋ฉด ์นดํ์์ ํ๋ฉด ์ง์ค์ด ๋ ์ ๋ ์ ์๊ฑฐ๋ ์. ํ๋ฒ ํด๋ด๋ ๋์์ง ์์ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. (I partly agree. But how about thinking about it this way? Because studying at a cafรฉ can help you focus better. I don't think it would hurt to try.)
B. A colleague thinks the meeting should be in-person. You think online is fine. Make your case.
<summary>Sample Answer
(That makes sense. But how about thinking about it this way? For example, doing it online has been effective enough many times. Furthermore, it can also save time.)
C. You want your team to try a new project management tool. Persuade them.
<summary>Sample Answer
์ ์๊ฐ์๋ ์ด ๋๊ตฌ๊ฐ ๋ ํจ๊ณผ์ ์ธ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. ์๋ํ๋ฉด ์์
์ ํ๋์ ๋ณผ ์ ์๊ฑฐ๋ ์. ๊ฒ๋ค๊ฐ ์ค์น๋ ๊ฐ๋จํด์. ํ๋ฒ ์๊ฐํด๋ด์. (I think this tool seems more effective. Because you can see all tasks at a glance. Furthermore, installation is simple too. Think about it for a moment.)
D. A friend is hesitant to start learning Korean. Persuade them to try.
<summary>Sample Answer
(I partly agree. It can be hard at first. But how about thinking about it this way? For example, even doing a little every day can help you improve quickly. I don't think it would hurt to try.)
E. A colleague prefers written reports over presentations. Persuade them to try a short presentation instead.
<summary>Sample Answer
(That makes sense. But how about thinking about it this way? Because with a presentation, you can take questions right away and communication is faster. I think this method seems more effective.)
F. Persuade a friend to take a short walk instead of sitting at their desk all day.
<summary>Sample Answer
(Think about it for a moment. Because a short walk can bring your concentration back. Furthermore, your mood will improve too. I don't think it would hurt to try.)
G. Persuade a colleague to submit their work a day early instead of on the deadline.
<summary>Sample Answer
(How about thinking about it this way? For example, submitting a day early gives you time to make revisions. Furthermore, the stress right before the deadline will decrease too.)

<summary>Sample Answer

I. Persuade a colleague to get feedback from the team before finalizing a project.
<summary>Sample Answer
(I partly agree. I understand you want to finish quickly. But if you think about it this way, getting feedback can ultimately lead to better results.)

Because if you keep using the same method, you might keep getting the same result. How about thinking about it this way? The new approach seems more effective.)
