🌈 The Big Picture
These five words are "sentence starters" — they begin a new sentence while connecting it logically to the last one. 그리고 adds info, 그래서 shows result, 그런데 shows contrast or a topic shift, 그러니까 emphasizes a conclusion, and 그럼 proposes a next step. Mastering these makes your Korean sound much more connected and natural! 🔗
🎭 그런데 vs 근데: Formality
그런데 and its casual contraction 근데 are everywhere in spoken Korean:
- 그런데 [geu-reon-de] — more formal/written, "however/by the way" 📝
- 근데 [geun-de] — casual, spoken, used constantly 🗣️
- 근데 있잖아요 [geun-de it-ja-na-yo] — "by the way, you know what..." 👀
- 근데 왜요? [geun-de wae-yo?] — "but why?" ❓
- 아 근데 [a geun-de] — "oh but/by the way" (introducing a new topic) 💭

🛠️ Putting It Together

"I had a meeting today. And after it ended, I ate lunch." ➕ — 그리고 simply adds the next event in sequence.
길이 막혔어요. 그래서 약속에 늦었어요. [gi-ri ma-kyeo-sseo-yo. geu-rae-seo yak-so-ge neu-jeo-sseo-yo.]
"The road was jammed. So I was late to my appointment." ➡️ — 그래서 connects cause and result.
날씨가 좋아요. 그런데 좀 추워요. [nal-ssi-ga jo-a-yo. geu-reon-de jom chu-wo-yo.]
"The weather is nice. But it's a bit cold." 🔄 — 그런데 contrasts two ideas.

Minsu: "I watched a movie yesterday. And I also had dinner with a friend."
지은: 좋았겠어요! 근데 무슨 영화 봤어요?
[Jieun: jo-a-tge-sseo-yo! geun-de mu-seun yeong-hwa bwa-sseo-yo?]
Jieun: "That sounds nice! By the way, what movie did you watch?"

🧭 Speaking Tip
In casual speech, these connectors often shrink: 그런데 → 근데, 그러면 → 그럼. Using the shorter forms makes you sound more natural in everyday conversation — save the longer forms for formal writing or presentations. 🔗
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
❌ Using 그리고 when you mean "but" → ✅ Use 그런데/근데 for contrast, 그리고 only adds information.
❌ Confusing 그래서 (so, result) and 왜냐하면 (because, reason) → ✅ 그래서 comes AFTER the cause; 왜냐하면 introduces the reason for what was just said.
❌ Overusing 그런데/근데 as filler in every sentence → ✅ Vary with 그리고, 그래서, 그럼 depending on the logical relationship.
❌ Forgetting that 그럼 can mean "well then" to start a new suggestion → ✅ 그럼 종이에요? = "well then, shall we go?"
You're connecting your sentences like a native now — 그래서, 화이팅! 🔗✨
