Natural Reaction Practice
How to respond to what someone says in a way that sounds genuinely Korean β not translated, not stiff, but real.
Iru Helper Note
One of the clearest signs of intermediate Korean fluency is how you react to things people say. Native speakers don't say λ€, μκ² μ΅λλ€ to everything β they have a rich toolkit of natural, spontaneous reactions. This lesson focuses exactly on that.
μ§μ§μ? λλ°μ΄λ€! κ·Έλ κ΅°μ, λͺ°λμ΄μ.
(Really? That's amazing! I see, I didn't know that.)
Β
π¬ What You'll Learn Today
In this lesson, you'll build a toolkit of natural reactions for Korean conversation β the expressions you reach for when someone shares news, says something surprising, tells you something you didn't know, or says something you can relate to. These expressions are the connective tissue of real Korean conversation, and having them ready instantly will make you sound dramatically more fluent.
π Natural Reactions β Key Expressions
Expression | Meaning | When to Use |
μ§μ§μ? | Really? | Surprised or curious |
κ·Έλ κ΅°μ | I see / Oh I see | Learning new info |
λͺ°λμ΄μ | I didn't know that | Genuine surprise at new info |
λ§μμ! | That's right! / Exactly! | Strong agreement |
κ·Έλ¬κ²μ | Right? / I know, right? | Shared feeling |
μ΄λ¨Έ! / μ΄λ¨Έλ! | Oh my! | Surprise (common with women) |
λλ°! | Wow / Amazing / That's crazy! | Strong positive/surprise |
μμ ! | Totally! / Absolutely! | Emphasis, strong agreement |
ν... | Wow... / No way... | Disbelief or mild shock |
μ, μ λ§μ? | Oh, really? | Softer surprised reaction |
μ λμ! | Me too! | Relating, agreeing |
κ·Έλ μ§ μμμ? | Isn't it? / Don't you think? | Seeking agreement |
λ무 μ’κ² λ€ | That sounds so nice | Responding to good news |
νλμ
¨κ² μ΄μ | That must have been hard | Empathetic response |
π‘ Key pattern: κ·Έλ κ΅°μ vs. λ§μμ β κ·Έλ κ΅°μ is for receiving new information ("oh I see"), while λ§μμ confirms something you already agree with ("that's right!"). Mixing them up is a common learner error.
π¬ Conversations in Action
Dialogue 1 β Reacting to good news
A: μ μ΄λ²μ μΉμ§νμ΄μ! (I got promoted this time!)
B: μ§μ§μ? λλ°! λ무 μ λλ€! (Really? Amazing! That's so great!)
A: κ°μ¬ν΄μ. μ΄μ¬ν νλ κ² μΈμ λ°μ κ² κ°μμ. (Thank you. It feels like my hard work was recognized.)
B: κ·Έλ¬κ²μ. μμ λΉμ°ν κ²°κ³Όμμ. (Right? That's a completely deserved outcome.)
Dialogue 2 β Reacting to something hard
A: μμ¦ λ무 λ°λΉ μ μ λ μ λλ‘ λͺ» μμ. (I've been so busy lately I can't even sleep properly.)
B: μ΄λ¨Έ, μ§μ§μ? νλμ
¨κ² μ΄μ. (Oh my, really? That must have been hard.)
A: λ€, μ’ νλ€μ΄μ. κ·Όλ° μ΄λ² μ£Όλ μ’ λμ κ² κ°μμ. (Yes, it's a bit hard. But I think this week will be a bit better.)
B: κ·Έλ κ΅°μ. λͺΈ μ μ±κΈ°μΈμ. (I see. Please take good care of yourself.)
π Cultural Note β Reactions as Listening Signals
In Korean conversation, reactions are also listening signals β they tell the speaker "I'm here, I'm following you, I understand." Korean listeners are highly active β you'll hear λ€, λ§μμ, κ·Έλ κ΅°μ, μ μ§μ§μ throughout a conversation, not just at the end of someone's point. Staying silent while someone talks can feel cold or inattentive in Korean conversation. Learning to sprinkle in natural reactions while listening β without interrupting β is a key social skill. It's called μΆμμ (interjections / listening sounds) in Korean, and it's an art form in itself.

Speaking Tip
The most powerful upgrade: replace λ€ with the reaction that fits the situation. Instead of just λ€ when someone shares news, reach for μ§μ§μ?, κ·Έλ κ΅°μ!, λλ°!, or μ λμ!. This one change will make your Korean conversation feel instantly more natural.
</summary>
Want more reps?
Find a 2-minute Korean conversation video or drama clip. Pause after each line of dialogue and say a natural Korean reaction out loud. Don't translate β just react. Do this five times with different clips.

Quick Reference
Expression | Tone |
μ§μ§μ? | Surprised/curious |
κ·Έλ κ΅°μ | "I see" (new info) |
λλ°! | Wow, amazing |
λ§μμ! | Exactly, that's right |
κ·Έλ¬κ²μ | "I know, right?" |
ν | Mild shock |
μ λμ! | Me too |
νλμ
¨κ² μ΄μ | Empathy |
λ무 μ’κ² λ€ | Sounds great |
μ, μ λ§μ? | Soft surprise |
Pitfall
Don't confuse κ·Έλ κ΅°μ (I see β receiving new info) with κ·Έλ¬κ²μ (I know, right β shared feeling). κ·Έλ κ΅°μ is for learning. κ·Έλ¬κ²μ is for agreeing on something you both already feel. Using them in the wrong situation sounds off.

Grammar Tip
~κ² μ΄μ in empathy phrases: νλμ
¨κ² μ΄μ = "that must have been hard." The -κ² - marker here expresses inference about someone else's experience β "I can imagine it was~." It's the key structure for any empathetic response.

Useful Phrases
Phrase | Meaning |
λλμ΄ | Finally |

Conversation Tip
In Korean, your reaction shows your level of attention. A flat λ€ when someone shares exciting news can seem cold. Match the energy: big news β μ§μ§μ? λλ°!; new info β κ·Έλ κ΅°μ λͺ°λμ΄μ; shared feeling β κ·Έλ¬κ²μ/λ§μμ. Reading which reaction fits the moment is the key skill here.
