TL;DR 🦄
  • 🧭 문단 연결 means guiding the reader from one paragraph to the next without making them feel lost.
  • 🧱 Use transition expressions by job: addition, contrast, result, restatement, example, sequence, and summary.
  • ✍️ In long-form prose, the transition should connect ideas — not just decorate the first sentence.

🌈 The Big Picture

A long Korean essay or prose piece is not just a pile of good sentences. It needs 흐름 — flow — so the reader can follow how one idea leads to the next. 🛤️

The keyword for this lesson is 문단 연결 [mun-dan yeon-gyeol] — paragraph connection. In advanced writing, this means choosing a transition that matches the relationship between ideas: adding, contrasting, explaining, giving results, giving examples, or wrapping up. 🧩

A transition expression usually sits at the front of a sentence or paragraph, often followed by a comma in formal writing: 그러나, [geu-reo-na] “however,” 따라서, [tta-ra-seo] “therefore,” 한편, [han-pyeon] “meanwhile/on the other hand.” The transition is the signpost; the sentence after it must actually walk in that direction. 🚏

🎨 The Core Transition Family

Here are the transition jobs this lesson uses. Keep the Korean expression purple in your notes, then match it to its writing function. 🖋️

  • 🧺 Addition / expansion
    • 또한 [tto-han] → also / furthermore
    • 더구나 [deo-gu-na] → moreover / what is more
  • ⚖️ Contrast / shift
    • 그러나 [geu-reo-na] → however
    • 그런데 [geu-reon-de] → but / now, then / by the way, depending on context
    • 반면 [ban-myeon] → whereas / on the other hand
    • 한편 [han-pyeon] → meanwhile / on the other hand
  • 🧮 Result / conclusion from evidence
    • 따라서 [tta-ra-seo] → therefore
    • 그러므로 [geu-reo-meu-ro] → therefore / for that reason
  • 🔎 Restatement / clarification
    • [jeuk] → that is / namely
    • 다시 말해 [da-si mal-hae] → in other words
  • 🍊 Example
    • 예를 들어 [ye-reul deu-reo] → for example
  • 🪜 Sequence
    • 먼저 [meon-jeo] → first
    • 다음으로 [da-eum-eu-ro] → next
    • 마지막으로 [ma-ji-mak-eu-ro] → lastly
  • 🎁 Final summary
    • 결국 [gyeol-guk] → in the end / ultimately
    • 요컨대 [yo-keon-dae] → in short / to sum up

Useful writing words for this lesson:
  • 문단 [mun-dan] → paragraph
  • [geul] → writing / text
  • 주장 [ju-jang] → claim / argument
  • 근거 [geun-geo] → evidence / basis

  • 결론 [gyeol-lon] → conclusion
  • 관점 [gwan-jeom] → perspective
  • 흐름 [heu-reum] → flow
  • 연결 [yeon-gyeol] → connection
  • 대조 [dae-jo] → contrast
  • 추가 [chu-ga] → addition
  • 결과 [gyeol-gwa] → result
  • 정리 [jeong-ni] → summary / organization
  • 독자 [dok-ja] → reader

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

  • 첫 문단은 주장을 밝힙니다. 또한 근거를 제시합니다. [cheot mun-dan-eun ju-jang-eul bal-kim-ni-da. tto-han geun-geo-reul je-si-ham-ni-da] — “The first paragraph states the claim. It also presents evidence.” 🧾
    • 또한 adds another point in the same direction.
  • 글의 흐름은 자연스럽습니다. 그러나 결론은 약합니다. [geul-ui heu-reum-eun ja-yeon-seu-reop-seum-ni-da. geu-reo-na gyeol-lon-eun yak-ham-ni-da] — “The flow of the writing is natural. However, the conclusion is weak.” ⚖️
    • 그러나 signals a clear contrast.
  • 근거가 충분합니다. 따라서 주장이 설득력 있습니다. [geun-geo-ga chung-bun-ham-ni-da. tta-ra-seo ju-jang-i seol-deuk-ryeok it-seum-ni-da] — “The evidence is sufficient. Therefore, the argument is persuasive.” 🧲
    • 따라서 points to a result or conclusion.

🧩 General Formation Rule

For long-form prose, use this simple transition test:

Previous idea + relationship + next idea

  • Same direction? → 또한, 더구나
  • Opposite direction or new angle? → 그러나, 반면, 한편
  • Result from evidence? → 따라서, 그러므로
  • Clarification? → , 다시 말해
  • Example? → 예를 들어
  • Ordered structure? → 먼저, 다음으로, 마지막으로
  • Final wrap-up? → 결국, 요컨대

There is no irregular conjugation here. The hard part is logic matching: the transition must honestly describe the relationship between the two ideas. 🧠

📚 Cross-check note

The transition expressions, punctuation behavior after common sentence-opening connectors, and writing-cohesion guidance were cross-checked against korean.go.kr, including National Institute of Korean Language writing guidance and orthography examples. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • 따라서 and 그러므로 both mean “therefore.” 따라서 feels very common in academic and essay writing; 그러므로 can sound slightly more formal or logical.
  • and 다시 말해 both restate an idea. is compact and formal; 다시 말해 is more explanatory.
  • 그러나 and 반면 both contrast, but 반면 works best when comparing two sides or two viewpoints.
  • 한편 can mean “meanwhile” or “on the other hand,” so check whether the next paragraph shifts time, focus, or perspective.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 따라서 before a sentence that is not a result → ✅ use 또한 for addition or 그러나 for contrast. 🧭
  • ❌ using 그런데 as a vague “anyway” in formal prose → ✅ choose the exact job: 그러나, 한편, or 다음으로. 🎯
  • ❌ beginning every paragraph with the same transition → ✅ vary the structure, or remove the transition when the flow is already clear. 🌊
  • ❌ using 반면 without a real comparison → ✅ make sure two sides are being compared. ⚖️
  • ❌ using 요컨대 too early → ✅ save it for a summary or final wrap-up. 🎁

🎉 Great transitions are quiet tour guides: they do not steal the spotlight, but they keep the reader from wandering into the grammar bushes. 🌿
