Mastering Intonation for Persuasion
How to use tone, emphasis, and softening to make your Korean more convincing
Iru Helper Note
In Korean, how you say something often carries more persuasive weight than what you say. A rising tone with κ·Έλ μ§ μλμ? invites agreement, while μ¬μ€μμ... signals a gentle pivot. Intonation is your hidden tool.
μ¬μ€μμ, μ΄κ² λ μ’μ κ² κ°μμ.
(Actually, I think this might be better.)

ποΈ What You'll Learn Today
Persuasion in Korean isn't just about the words β it's about how you frame them with softeners, emphasis, and strategic delivery. In this lesson you'll learn the spoken phrases and patterns that make your Korean feel more convincing, whether you're recommending something, gently pushing back, or steering a conversation toward your point of view. You'll see how small changes in word choice and structure create a big shift in how persuasive you sound.
π Persuasive Speaking Expressions
Expression | Meaning | Notes |
μ¬μ€μμ | Actually / The thing is | Soft pivot opener; sets up a correction or better idea |
μμ§ν λ§νλ©΄ | Honestly speaking | Opens a direct but sincere opinion |
μ μκ°μλ | In my opinion / I think | Standard opinion frame (covered in IS #1, now used persuasively) |
κ·Έλ μ§ μλμ? | Isn't that right? | Rising intonation invites agreement |
~λ κ² λ μ’μ κ² κ°μμ | I think ~ would be better | Soft comparative persuasion |
~λ κ² λμ κ² κ°μμ | I think ~ might be a better option | λλ€ = to be better; slightly stronger than μ’λ€ here |
νλ² μκ°ν΄ 보면 | If you think about it once | Invites the listener to reflect before responding |
μλνλ©΄ | Because / The reason is | Signals you're about to give a reason |
κ·Έλ¬λκΉμ | Exactly / Right, so... | Validates what they said and builds on it |
λ§λ λ§μ΄μμ, κ·Έλ°λ° | That's true, but | Acknowledges before redirecting |
μ¬μ€ μ΄κ² λ | Actually, this is more/better | Compact direct comparison |
~νλ©΄ μ΄λ¨κΉμ? | What if we/you ~? | Soft conditional suggestion |
μ΄λ»κ² μκ°νμΈμ? | What do you think? | Ends a persuasive pitch by opening to them |
νλ² ν΄λ³΄λ κ² μ΄λμ? | What about trying it once? | Gentle push to take action |
μ΄κ² μ μΌ μ’μ λ°©λ² κ°μμ | I think this is the best way | Strong but polite recommendation |
π‘ Key pattern: μ¬μ€μμ + [your real point] + ~λ κ² λ μ’μ κ² κ°μμ + μ΄λ»κ² μκ°νμΈμ? = gentle pivot β better option β open to them
π¬ Conversations in Action
Recommending a different approach

μ§μ: κ·Έλ¬λκΉμ. μ λ μ‘°μ©ν κ³³μ΄ μ’μμ. (Exactly. I like quiet places too.)
λ―Όμ€: κ·ΈλΌ νλ² κ°λ³ΌκΉμ? (Then shall we try going?)
Steering toward a decision
νμ§: μ΄λ€ μμ΄ λ μ’μμ? (Which color is better?)
νμ: μμ§ν λ§νλ©΄, μ΄κ² λ μ μ΄μΈλ¦΄ κ² κ°μμ. λ§λ λ§μ΄μμ, κ·Έλ°λ° μ΄μͺ½μ΄ λ μ€μ©μ μ΄κΈ°λ νκ±°λ μ. νλ² μκ°ν΄ 보면 μ΄λ¨κΉμ? (Honestly speaking, I think this would suit you better. That's true, but this one is also more practical, you see. What if you thought about it for a moment?)
νμ§: κ·Έλ λ€μ. μ΄κ² λμ κ² κ°μμ. (You're right. I think this one might be better.)
π Cultural Note β Indirect Persuasion in Korean
Korean persuasion tends to be indirect and collaborative rather than blunt. Saying μ΄κ² λ§μμ (this is correct) sounds assertive to the point of rudeness, while μ΄κ² λ μ’μ κ² κ°μμ (I think this might be better) is persuasive without pressure. The phrase κ·Έλ μ§ μλμ? (isn't that right?) with a rising tone is particularly powerful β it softly invites agreement rather than demanding it. Ending your pitch with μ΄λ»κ² μκ°νμΈμ? (what do you think?) signals respect and openness, which paradoxically makes your recommendation more likely to be accepted.

Expression Reference
Expression | Nuance/Key |
μ¬μ€μμ | Soft pivot opener |
μμ§ν λ§νλ©΄ | Honest opener |
κ·Έλ μ§ μλμ? | Invite agreement |
~λ κ² λ μ’μ κ² κ°μμ | Soft: this is better |
~λ κ² λμ κ² κ°μμ | Soft: better option |
μλνλ©΄ | Because / reason signal |
κ·Έλ¬λκΉμ | Validate & build |
λ§λ λ§μ΄μμ, κ·Έλ°λ° | Acknowledge & redirect |
νλ² ν΄λ³΄λ κ² μ΄λμ? | Gentle action push |
μ΄λ»κ² μκ°νμΈμ? | Open to their view |
Intonation Tip
κ·Έλ μ§ μλμ? is most persuasive with a genuine rising tone β you're really asking, not stating. If you say it flat, it sounds like a rhetorical challenge. Rising = collaborative; flat = confrontational. The same goes for μ΄λ»κ² μκ°νμΈμ? β a warm rising tone signals you genuinely care about their answer.

C. You want to invite agreement using rising intonation.
(1) μ΄κ² λ§μμ (2) κ·Έλ μ§ μλμ? (3) μ΄λ»κ² μκ°νμΈμ? (4) λ§λ λ§μ΄μμ

Pitfall
Don't use μ΄κ² λ§μμ (this is correct) or κ·Έκ² νλ Έμ΄μ (that's wrong) in persuasion β both sound blunt and can shut down the conversation. Replace with μ΄κ² λ μ’μ κ² κ°μμ (I think this might be better). Persuasion in Korean is about opening doors, not closing them.

Grammar Tip
~κ±°λ μ is a spoken explanation marker. μλνλ©΄ μ΄κ² λ μ€μ©μ μ΄κ±°λ μ = "because this is more practical, you see." The ~κ±°λ μ ending signals you're sharing context or a reason the listener might not know. It gives your reason a warm, informative tone rather than a lecturing one β perfect for persuasion.

~λ κ² λ μ’μ κ² κ°μμ vs. ~λ κ² λμ κ² κ°μμ: both mean "I think ~ would be better." μ’λ€ (good) is more about positive quality; λ«λ€ (better/preferable) is more about comparison between options. Use μ’μ κ² κ°μμ when recommending generally; use λμ κ² κ°μμ when directly comparing two options.

Conversation Tip
The most persuasive Korean speakers follow this arc: acknowledge β reason β compare β invite. λ§λ λ§μ΄μμ (acknowledge) β μλνλ©΄ (reason) β μ΄μͺ½μ΄ λ μ’μ κ² κ°μμ (compare) β μ΄λ»κ² μκ°νμΈμ? (invite). This four-step pattern makes any recommendation feel collaborative rather than pushy.
