Managing Conversation Pauses without Feeling Awkward
Turn silence from uncomfortable to natural — using the right Korean tools.
Iru Helper Note
In Korean conversation, pauses don't have to feel awkward. Knowing a few short expressions lets you fill the space naturally — without rushing or going blank.
잠깐만요, 뭐였지... 아, 맞다!
(Just a moment, what was it... Oh, right!)
⏸️ What You'll Learn Today
Every conversation has pauses — moments when you're thinking, remembering, or transitioning. In English you might say "um," "let me think," or "where was I?" Korean has its own set of natural pause-fillers and thinking sounds that let you hold the floor without going silent. Using these makes you sound like a real person having a real conversation, not someone reciting memorized lines.
📌 Pause Expressions and What They Do
Expression | Use | Meaning |
음... / 으음... | Thinking sound | Hmm... (buying time) |
잠깐만요 | Pause politely | Just a moment / Hold on |
뭐였지... | Trying to remember | What was it... |
어디까지 했더라... | Re-finding your place | Where were we... |
그러니까 / 그게 | Transition while thinking | So... / Well, the thing is... |
어떻게 말하면 좋을까... | Searching for words | How should I put it... |
맞다, 맞다 / 아, 맞다! | Remembering something | Oh right! / That's it! |
💡 Key pattern: Korean thinking sounds (음..., 그러니까...) serve the same role as English "um" and "well" — they signal you're still speaking, just processing. Using them is natural and expected in conversation.
Recovering after a pause:
Situation | Expression |
You forgot the word | 뭐였지... 아, (word)! |
You lost your train of thought | 어디까지 했더라... 맞다, |
You need to think | 잠깐만요, 생각해볼게요 |
You're searching for the right words | 어떻게 말하면 좋을까... 그러니까... |
💬 Conversations in Action
Conversation 1 — Remembering mid-sentence
A: 그래서 어제 뭐 했어요? (So what did you do yesterday?)
B: 어제요... 음... 뭐였지... 아, 맞다! 친구 만났어요. (Yesterday... hmm... what was it... oh right! I met a friend.)
Conversation 2 — Searching for the right word
A: 한국어로 어떻게 말해요? (How do you say it in Korean?)
B: 어떻게 말하면 좋을까... 그러니까... '익숙하다'라는 말이 제일 가까운 것 같아요. (How should I put it... so... I think '익숙하다' is the closest word.)
🌏 Cultural Note — 침묵의 의미 (What Silence Means)
In Korean conversation, a short pause is not always awkward — it can signal that you're being thoughtful rather than careless. However, a very long silence can feel uncomfortable in casual conversation. Korean speakers often use 그러니까 or 음 to maintain connection while thinking. These fillers signal "I'm still here and I'm about to say something useful" — which is far more comfortable for everyone than an empty silence. Learning these tools is one of the clearest signs that you've moved beyond scripted Korean into real conversation.

Conversation Tip
When you're in a real Korean conversation and you blank out, try this: take a breath, say 음... 잠깐만요, and then give yourself the moment you need. Native speakers do this all the time and it never sounds strange. What sounds strange is panicking and going completely silent.
