ποΈ What You'll Learn Today
In this lesson, you'll learn how to talk about body language and nonverbal communication in Korean β describing eye contact, gestures, posture, facial expressions, and the cultural norms around each. This vocabulary is useful in conversations about social skills, cultural differences, and reading situations in Korean social settings.
π Body Language β Key Expressions
Expression | Meaning | Notes |
λμ λ§μ£ΌμΉλ€ | To make eye contact | λ = eye, λ§μ£ΌμΉλ€ = to meet |
μμ | Gaze, line of sight | μμ μ νΌνλ€ = to avoid eye contact |
κ³ κ°λ₯Ό λλμ΄λ€ | To nod | Agreement or listening signal |
κ³ κ°λ₯Ό μ λ€ | To shake one's head | Disagreement or refusal |
ν짱μ λΌλ€ | To cross one's arms | Can signal defensiveness |
μμΈ | Posture | λ°λ₯Έ μμΈ = good posture |
νμ | Facial expression | 무νμ = expressionless |
λ―Έμλ₯Ό μ§λ€ | To smile | μ§λ€ = to make/form |
μμ§μ νλ€ | To gesture with hands | Hand gesture |
μμ κ° μμ΄ λ³΄μ¬μ | Looks/seems confident | Reading someone's vibe |
κΈ΄μ₯ν κ² κ°μμ | Seems nervous | κΈ΄μ₯ = tension, nervousness |
μ€λ‘κ° λ μ μμ΄μ | Can be rude/impolite | Social norm warning |
곡μνκ² | Politely, respectfully | 곡μνλ€ = to be respectful |
λμΉκ° λΉ λ₯΄λ€ | Quick to read the room | λμΉ = social awareness |

B: κΈμμ. κΈ΄μ₯ν κ² κ°κΈ°λ νκ³ , κ·Έλ₯ μ΅κ΄μΌ μλ μμ΄μ. (Hmm. They might be nervous, or it could just be a habit.)

B: λ§μμ. λμΉκ° λΉ λ₯Έ λΆμ΄μλ€μ. (Right. You're quick to read people.)
π Cultural Note β λμΉ and Nonverbal Communication
λμΉ (nunchi) is one of the most uniquely Korean social concepts β the ability to read a room, pick up on unspoken signals, and respond appropriately without being told. Having λμΉκ° μλ€ (good nunchi) is considered a highly positive social trait. It means you can sense when someone is uncomfortable, when a topic should be changed, or when to be quiet β all from subtle nonverbal cues. In Korean social contexts, much is communicated without words: a slight bow, a lowered gaze toward an elder, a soft smile rather than a direct refusal. Developing your λμΉ β and knowing how to discuss it β is one of the most valuable intermediate Korean social skills.
