TL;DR 🦄
  • 🖋️ -(으)며 is a polished, literary connector that can mean “while/as” when two actions overlap.
  • 🧭 It also lists actions or states in formal writing, similar to “and/and also,” so context decides whether the feeling is simultaneous or list-like.
  • 🎭 Compared with -면서 (“while,” more conversational) and -고 (“and/then,” broader), -(으)며 sounds more composed, essay-like, or narration-friendly.

and listen for how the clauses flow together. Literary grammar still has a pulse. 🫀

🌈 The Big Picture

-(으)며 is the connector you reach for when Korean wants to sound smooth, written, and slightly elegant. It can describe two actions happening together: someone smiles while speaking, walks while looking around, or listens as they take notes. 📝
It can also list two facts or qualities in a formal way: a policy is efficient and flexible, a room is quiet and bright, a person is careful and persistent. That means -(으)며 is not automatically “while” every time — the surrounding verbs, subjects, and meaning decide the best English translation. 🧭
Advanced learners should notice the register. In everyday conversation, -면서 often feels more natural for “while.” In essays, narration, newsy summaries, formal descriptions, and polished writing, -(으)며 can sound cleaner and more literary. 🖋️

🎨 The Core -(으)며 Family

1. Simultaneous action: “while / as” 🕰️

Use this when the first clause describes an action that overlaps with the main action.
  • 창밖을 바라보며 생각에 잠겼어요. (They became lost in thought while looking out the window.) 🪟
    • 창밖 = outside the window, 바라보다 = to gaze/look at, 생각에 잠기다 = to become absorbed in thought.
  • 교수는 자료를 넘기며 핵심을 설명했다. (The professor explained the main points while turning the pages.) 📄
    • 자료 = materials, 넘기다 = to turn/pass over, 핵심 = key point, 설명하다 = to explain.

2. Formal listing: “and / and also” 📚

Use this when the clauses are parallel qualities, actions, or facts.
  • 그 연구는 범위가 넓으며 분석도 치밀하다. (The study has a broad scope and its analysis is meticulous.) 🔬
    • 연구 = study/research, 범위 = scope, 넓다 = to be broad/wide, 분석 = analysis, 치밀하다 = to be meticulous.
  • 이 방식은 간결하며 설득력이 있다. (This method is concise and persuasive.) 🧩
    • 방식 = method, 간결하다 = to be concise, 설득력 = persuasive power.

3. Noun-listing cousin: 명사 + 이며 🧱

With nouns, 이다 becomes 이며, meaning “is/being A and…”
  • 그는 번역가이며 편집자이다. (They are a translator and an editor.) 📚
    • 번역가 = translator, 편집자 = editor.

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

Pattern A: 동사 어간 + 며 after a vowel or 🧵

  • 기자는 현장을 살피며 질문을 이어 갔다. (The reporter continued asking questions while examining the scene.) 🎙️
    • 기자 = reporter, 현장 = scene/site, 살피다 = to examine, 질문 = question, 이어 가다 = to continue.

Pattern B: 동사/형용사 어간 + 으며 after a consonant 🧱

  • 그 문장은 짧으며 여운이 길다. (That sentence is short, yet its aftereffect lingers.) ✒️
    • 문장 = sentence, 짧다 = to be short, 여운 = lingering impression, 길다 = to be long.

Pattern C: 명사 + 이며 for formal noun listing 🏛️

  • 이 공간은 자료실이며 토론 장소이다. (This space is a resource room and a discussion place.) 🗂️
    • 공간 = space, 자료실 = resource room, 토론 장소 = discussion place.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Attach -(으)며 directly to the verb or adjective stem:
  • Stem ends in a vowel → 가다 (to go) → 가며 (while going / and goes)
  • Stem ends in 살다 (to live) → 살며 (while living / and lives)
  • Stem ends in another consonant → 읽다 (to read) → 읽으며 (while reading / and reads)
  • Noun + 이다학생이다 (to be a student) → 학생이며 (is a student and…)
No special irregular transformation is caused by -(으)며 itself. Usual stem behavior still matters, so check the dictionary form before attaching the ending. 🧰

📚 Cross-check note

The two core meanings — listing two or more actions/states and showing simultaneous overlapping actions — were cross-checked against 국립국어원 / Korean.go.kr guidance on -며. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • -면서 → everyday/conversational “while,” strongly simultaneous. 음악을 들으면서 걸었어요. (I walked while listening to music.) 🎧
  • -고 → broad “and/then,” can list or sequence actions but does not strongly say “simultaneously.” 문을 닫고 나갔어요. (I closed the door and went out.) 🚪
  • 그리고 → explicit “and” between sentences or phrases. 조용하다. 그리고 밝다. (It is quiet. And it is bright.) 💡
  • 동시에 → “at the same time,” more explicit than -(으)며. 두 행사가 동시에 열렸다. (The two events were held at the same time.) 🗓️

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 밥을 먹으며 잠이 들었어요. → ✅ 책을 읽으며 잠이 들었어요. (Use actions that can realistically overlap; falling asleep while reading is natural, while eating rice and falling asleep sounds odd without a special context.) 📖
  • ❌ Treating every -(으)며 as “while” → ✅ Check whether it lists qualities: 간결하며 정확하다 = “concise and accurate,” not “while concise.” 🎯
  • ❌ Using -(으)며 in very casual chatter everywhere → ✅ Use -면서 more often for everyday spoken “while.” ☕
  • ❌ Forgetting after a consonant → ✅ 읽다읽으며, not 읽며. 📘
  • ❌ Using -고 when overlap matters → ✅ Choose -(으)며 or -면서 if both actions happen together. 🕰️

-(으)며 is the grammar equivalent of a well-cut coat: not flashy, but suddenly the whole sentence looks tailored. 🧥✨

🌈 The Big Picture

-(으)며 is the elegant older sibling of -(으)면서. It can mean “while doing” when two actions happen together, but it also works beautifully for formal listing: “A and B,” “A while B,” or “A, and also B.” 🪶

You will see -(으)며 in essays, reports, speeches, academic writing, news-style summaries, narration, and careful explanations. In casual speech, Korean speakers usually prefer -(으)면서 for “while” and -고 for ordinary “and.” ☕

Advanced learner secret: -(으)며 is not just a fancy synonym. It creates a smooth written chain where clauses feel balanced, formal, and connected. That makes it useful for describing policies, research findings, social changes, cultural patterns, and official documents. 📄

🎨 The Core -(으)며 Family

1. Action + action: “while / as”

Use -(으)며 when one action happens together with another action.

3. Formal list: “A and B”

Use N이며 to list nouns in a polished way.
  • 이 자료는 보고서이며 논문이에요.
    • [i ja-ryo-neun bo-go-seo-i-myeo non-mu-ni-e-yo]
This material is a report and an academic paper. 📄

Formal noun listing 📚

한국어 = Korean language, 언어 = language, 문화 = culture.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Attach -(으)며 to the predicate stem.

1. Vowel stem +

  • 가다가며 = while going / and goes
  • 보다보며 = while watching / and sees
  • 공부하다공부하며 = while studying / and studies
  • 기록하다기록하며 = while recording / and records

2. Consonant stem + 으며

  • 먹다먹으며 = while eating / and eats
  • 읽다읽으며 = while reading / and reads
  • 있다있으며 = while existing / and is present
  • 없다없으며 = while not existing / and is absent

3. ㄹ stem +

  • 살다살며 = while living / and lives
  • 만들다만들며 = while making / and makes
  • 알다알며 = while knowing / and knows

4. Noun + 이며

  • 보고서보고서이며 = is a report and...
  • 정책정책이며 = is a policy and...
  • 자산자산이며 = is an asset and...

5. Tense in formal writing

For simple simultaneous action, put tense on the final verb:
  • 자료를 읽으며 기록했어요. = I recorded while reading materials.
  • 자료를 읽었으며 기록했어요. if you only mean “while reading.”

But in formal reports, -었으며 can list completed facts:
  • 변화가 나타났으며 제도가 발전했어요.
    • [byeon-hwa-ga na-ta-nat-eu-myeo je-do-ga bal-jeon-hae-sseo-yo]
Changes appeared, and the system developed. 📈

📚 Cross-check note

The form and usage of -(으)며 were cross-checked against korean.go.kr: it is described as a connective ending for linking two or more simultaneous actions/states or parallel facts, with -(으)면서 treated as a related simultaneous-action form. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • -(으)며 → literary/formal/written; smooth for reports, essays, narration, and polished explanations. 🖋️
  • -(으)면서 → everyday “while doing”; more natural in casual speech and practical conversation. 🎧
  • -고 → neutral “and”; works almost everywhere, but less literary and less elegant. 🔗

Tiny register compass: if your sentence sounds like a report, essay, article, or formal presentation, -(으)며 can shine. If it sounds like texting a friend, -(으)면서 or -고 is usually safer. 🧭

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 읽며 → ✅ 읽으며 (consonant stem 읽다 needs 으며).
  • 살으며 → ✅ 살며 (ㄹ stem takes , not 으며).
  • ❌ Using -(으)며 for every casual “while” sentence → ✅ Use -(으)면서 in everyday conversation.
  • 자료를 읽었으며 기록했어요 for simple “recorded while reading” → ✅ 자료를 읽으며 기록했어요 (tense on the final verb).
  • ❌ Treating -(으)며 and -며 as different grammar → ✅ They are one pattern; appears after most consonant stems.

Elegant connector unlocked: -(으)며 lets your Korean sound calm, formal, and writerly — perfect for polished explanations that walk and chew grammar at the same time. 🖋️🚶
