TOPIK Listening
TL;DR
  • In Korean listening, a final consonant often moves to the next syllable when the next syllable begins with ㅇ.
  • Train your ear to connect written syllables into the actually heard sound: 음악은 → 으마근, 책이 → 채기, 한국어 → 한구거.
  • For TOPIK listening, use the first pass for meaning and the second pass to confirm changed sounds, particles, and keywords.
🎧
🎧 Audio Practice
Use the tracks below as TTS scripts. First pass: listen without pausing and answer quickly. Second pass: replay once and underline the syllable where liaison happens. Optional third pass: shadow the sentence aloud, connecting the final consonant smoothly into the next vowel.

🔑 The Big Picture

Korean words are written in syllable blocks, but they are not always heard block by block. When a syllable ends in a consonant 받침 and the next syllable begins with ㅇ plus a vowel, the 받침 is usually carried over to the next syllable.
This is called 연음 법칙. It matters because TOPIK listening often tests whether you can recognize a familiar word after its sound connects across syllable boundaries.
Examples:
  • 음악을 → 으마글
  • 책이 → 채기
  • 한국어 → 한구거
  • 꽃을 → 꼬츨
  • 밥은 → 바븐

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Basic liaison: 받침 + ㅇ

When the next syllable begins with ㅇ, the ㅇ has no sound. The final consonant from the previous syllable moves forward.
  • 옷이 → 오시
  • 밥을 → 바블
  • 집에 → 지베
  • 문을 → 무늘

2. Double 받침 usually releases one consonant

Some syllables have double final consonants. In many common listening items, one consonant is heard as the final sound and may link to the next vowel.
  • 읽어요 → 일거요
  • 앉아요 → 안자요
  • 넓어요 → 널버요
  • 없어 → 업써 is a tense-sound change, so do not treat every change as simple liaison.

3. Liaison can hide particles

Particles such as 은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에, 에서 often begin with a vowel. This makes them common places for liaison.
  • 책을 샀어요 → 채글 사써요
  • 집에 가요 → 지베 가요
  • 한국어를 배워요 → 한구거를 배워요

4. Meaning comes first

Do not spend the whole first listening pass analyzing pronunciation. TOPIK rewards comprehension. Notice the connected sound only when it helps you identify a word, particle, place, time, or action.

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Predict the written form. If you hear 바븐, ask: could it be 밥은?
  1. Catch particles after connected sounds. 채기 may be 책이, and 채글 may be 책을.
  1. Use context. If the topic is language study, 한구거 probably means 한국어.
  1. Listen for sentence endings. Liaison happens inside phrases, but endings like -어요, -았습니다, -고 있어요 carry the main action or state.
  1. Second pass confirmation. On replay, focus only on one or two uncertain phrases instead of trying to re-hear everything.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Pitfall 1: Writing what you hear literally. 바블 is not a separate word; it is probably 밥을.
  • Pitfall 2: Ignoring particles. 책이 and 책을 sound different after liaison: 채기 vs 채글.
  • Pitfall 3: Treating every sound shift as liaison. Liaison is mainly 받침 moving into a following vowel. Tensing, nasalization, and aspiration are different sound changes.
  • Pitfall 4: Over-pausing. If you pause after every syllable, you lose the sentence meaning. Practice hearing connected chunks.

✅ Final Review Checklist

  • Can you identify liaison when 받침 is followed by ㅇ?
  • Can you recover the written word from the connected sound?
  • Can you still understand the whole sentence without stopping at every sound shift?
  • On the second pass, can you confirm particles such as 이/가, 을/를, 은/는, and 에?
💡
TL;DR
  • 연음 happens when a final consonant moves to the next vowel sound: 한국어 → 한구거, 책이 → 채기.
  • TOPIK listening uses natural connected speech, so words may sound different from their spelling.
  • Listen by phrase, not isolated syllable: noun + particle is the most common place for liaison.
🎧
🎧 Audio Practice
Use the 2-pass method. First pass: listen naturally and choose the meaning. Second pass: replay and mark where the batchim links to the next vowel. Optional: shadow each phrase slowly, then at natural speed: 책이 → 채기, 밥을 → 바블, 한국어 → 한구거.

🔑 The Big Picture

Written Korean and spoken Korean do not always match one-to-one. When a word ends in a consonant and the next syllable begins with a vowel, the final consonant often links forward. This is called 연음 법칙.
Example:
  • 책이 sounds like 채기
  • 밥을 sounds like 바블
  • 한국어 sounds like 한구거
TOPIK listening uses natural pronunciation, so recognizing liaison helps you understand common words quickly.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Noun + particle

This is the most common liaison pattern.
Examples:
  • 책 + 이 → 책이 sounds like 채기
  • 밥 + 을 → 밥을 sounds like 바블
  • 집 + 에 → 집에 sounds like 지베
  • 옷 + 이 → 옷이 sounds like 오시

2. Word + vowel-starting ending

Some verb endings also create connected sounds.
Examples:
  • 먹어요 sounds like 머거요
  • 읽어요 often sounds like 일거요
  • 앉아요 sounds like 안자요

3. Meaning stays the same

The spelling does not change in writing. Only the pronunciation changes.
  • 한국어 is still written 한국어
  • 음악을 is still written 음악을
  • 꽃이 is still written 꽃이

4. Use context

If you hear “바블 머거요,” it is probably 밥을 먹어요. Do not search for a new word “바블.”

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Expect linking before particles: 이/가, 을/를, 에, 으로.
  1. Recover the spelling from meaning. “채기 있어요” may be 책이 있어요.
  1. Listen for phrase chunks. 책이 / 밥을 / 집에 / 한국어.
  1. Do not panic when spelling and sound differ. TOPIK tests natural listening.
  1. Second pass: write the spoken sound, then match it to the written word.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Do not spell by sound only. 한구거 is written 한국어.
  • Do not confuse liaison with a different vocabulary word.
  • Do not pronounce each syllable separately when shadowing natural Korean.
  • Do not forget that some final consonants simplify before linking; focus on common TOPIK words first.
