🌈 The Big Picture

• 만 = “only / just” in a neutral, flexible way.

• 뿐 = “only / merely / nothing more than that,” often a stronger “that’s all.”

• 밖에 = “nothing but / only,” but it needs a negative ending such as 없어요, 몰라요, 안, 못, or 않아요.

• 저는 물만 마셨어요. [jeo-neun mul-man ma-syeo-sseo-yo] — I drank only water.

• 물뿐이에요. [mul-ppun-i-e-yo] — It is only water / water is all.

• 물밖에 없어요. [mul-ba-kke eop-seo-yo] — There is nothing but water.

🎨 Core Pattern 1: 만

• 저만 [jeo-man] — only me

• 오늘만 [o-neul-man] — only today

• 하나만 [ha-na-man] — only one

• 물만 [mul-man] — only water

• 저만 갔어요. [jeo-man ga-sseo-yo] — Only I went.

• 오늘만 쉬어요. [o-neul-man swi-eo-yo] — I rest only today.

• 커피만 마셔요. [keo-pi-man ma-syeo-yo] — I only drink coffee.

• 집에만 있어요. [ji-be-man i-sseo-yo] — I stay only at home.

• 한국에서만 살았어요. [han-gu-ge-seo-man sa-ra-sseo-yo] — I lived only in Korea.

🎨 Core Pattern 2: 뿐

• N뿐이에요 [N-ppun-i-e-yo] — It is only N / N is all.

• 저는 학생일 뿐이에요. [jeo-neun hak-saeng-il ppun-i-e-yo] — I am only a student.

• 이건 시작일 뿐이에요. [i-geon si-ja-gil ppun-i-e-yo] — This is only the beginning.

• 남은 건 물뿐이에요. [na-meun geon mul-ppun-i-e-yo] — What is left is only water.

• 동사 어간 + -(으)ㄹ 뿐이에요 — I only do / it only does / nothing more than doing.

• 저는 기다릴 뿐이에요. [jeo-neun gi-da-ril ppun-i-e-yo] — I only wait / I can only wait.

• 그냥 물어봤을 뿐이에요. [geu-nyang mu-reo-bwa-sseul ppun-i-e-yo] — I only asked.

• 도와주고 싶을 뿐이에요. [do-wa-ju-go si-peul ppun-i-e-yo] — I only want to help.

🎨 Core Pattern 3: 밖에

• N밖에 없어요 [N-ba-kke eop-seo-yo] — There is only N / There is nothing but N.

• 돈이 천 원밖에 없어요. [do-ni cheon won-ba-kke eop-seo-yo] — I only have 1,000 won.

• 시간이 10분밖에 없어요. [shi-ga-ni ship-bun-ba-kke eop-seo-yo] — There are only 10 minutes.

• 저는 한국어를 조금밖에 몰라요. [jeo-neun han-gu-geo-reul jo-geum-ba-kke mol-la-yo] — I only know a little Korean.

• ✅ 하나밖에 없어요. [ha-na-ba-kke eop-seo-yo] — There is only one.

• ❌ 하나밖에 있어요. [ha-na-ba-kke i-sseo-yo] — wrong for “There is only one.”

🛠️ How It Works in Sentences

1. 저는 오늘만 일해요. [jeo-neun o-neul-man i-rae-yo] — I work only today.
• 오늘만 limits the time to today.

2. 이건 연습일 뿐이에요. [i-geon yeon-seu-bil ppun-i-e-yo] — This is only practice.
• 뿐이에요 makes it sound like “nothing more than practice.”

3. 저는 하나밖에 못 먹었어요. [jeo-neun ha-na-ba-kke mot meo-geo-sseo-yo] — I could only eat one.
• 밖에 pairs with negative 못.

4. 친구만 왔어요. [chin-gu-man wa-sseo-yo] — Only my friend came.
• Neutral “only.”

5. 친구밖에 안 왔어요. [chin-gu-ba-kke an wa-sseo-yo] — Nobody came except my friend / only my friend came.
• Same basic meaning, but with a negative structure.

📚 Cross-check note

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

• ❌ Using 밖에 with a positive verb → ✅ Use a negative partner: 하나밖에 없어요, not 하나밖에 있어요.

• ❌ Treating 만, 뿐, and 밖에 as identical → ✅ They can all mean “only,” but the grammar and nuance differ.

• ❌ Forgetting that 뿐 often needs 이다 after nouns → ✅ 학생일 뿐이에요.

• ❌ Saying 물밖에 있어요 for “There is only water” → ✅ 물밖에 없어요.

• ❌ Overusing 뿐 in casual beginner speech → ✅ 만 is often the safest first choice.
