🎨 Formation Rules

1. Action verbs: -ㄴ/는다고 하다

• Vowel stem or ㄹ stem → ㄴ다고 하다
• 가다 → 간다고 하다 = says someone goes/is going
• 오다 → 온다고 하다 = says someone comes/is coming
• 살다 → 산다고 하다 = says someone lives

• Consonant stem → 는다고 하다
• 먹다 → 먹는다고 하다 = says someone eats/is eating
• 읽다 → 읽는다고 하다 = says someone reads/is reading
• 찾다 → 찾는다고 하다 = says someone looks for

• 친구가 한국어를 배운다고 해요. = My friend says they’re learning Korean.

• 민수 씨가 밥을 먹는다고 했어요. = Minsu said they were eating.

2. Descriptive verbs/adjectives: -다고 하다

• 좋다 → 좋다고 하다 = says it is good

• 바쁘다 → 바쁘다고 하다 = says someone is busy

• 춥다 → 춥다고 하다 = says it is cold

• 예쁘다 → 예쁘다고 하다 = says it is pretty

• 지수가 이 옷이 예쁘다고 했어요. = Jisoo said these clothes were pretty.

• 엄마가 음식이 짜다고 했어요. = My mom said the food was salty.

3. 있다/없다: 있다고 / 없다고 하다

• 있다 → 있다고 하다

• 없다 → 없다고 하다

• 재미있다 → 재미있다고 하다

• 맛없다 → 맛없다고 하다

• 친구가 시간이 없다고 해요. = My friend says they don’t have time.

• 사람들이 이 책이 재미있다고 해요. = People say this book is interesting.

4. Nouns: (이)라고 하다

• Consonant noun + 이라고 하다
• 학생 → 학생이라고 하다 = says someone is a student
• 선생님 → 선생님이라고 하다 = says someone is a teacher

• Vowel noun + 라고 하다
• 의사 → 의사라고 하다 = says someone is a doctor
• 친구 → 친구라고 하다 = says someone is a friend

• 그 사람은 학생이라고 해요. = They say that person is a student.

• 민수 씨가 여기는 병원이라고 했어요. = Minsu said this place is a hospital.

5. 아니다: 아니라고 하다

• 학생이 아니라고 해요. = They say they’re not a student.

• 그게 사실이 아니라고 했어요. = They said that’s not true.

6. Past and future statements

• Past: -았/었다고 하다
• 갔다고 해요. = They say someone went.
• 먹었다고 해요. = They say someone ate.

• Future/plan: -(으)ㄹ 거라고 하다
• 갈 거라고 해요. = They say they will go.
• 먹을 거라고 해요. = They say they will eat.

-다고 하다 = indirect statement for verbs/adjectives

• 민수 씨가 바쁘다고 했어요.
Minsu said they were busy.

(이)라고 하다 = indirect statement for nouns

• 민수 씨가 학생이라고 했어요.
Minsu said they were a student.

Direct quote + 라고 하다 = exact words

• 민수 씨가 “바빠요”라고 했어요.
Minsu said, “I’m busy.”

1. -다고 해요 = they say / I heard

• 내일 비가 온다고 해요. = They say it will rain tomorrow.

• 그 사람이 바쁘다고 해요. = They say that person is busy.

2. -다고 했어요 = said that

• 친구가 늦는다고 했어요. = My friend said they would be late.

3. Short forms: -대요 / -(이)래요

• 좋다고 해요 → 좋대요 = They say it’s good.
