Handling the Bill
How to navigate paying, splitting, and treating in Korean social settings.
Iru Helper Note
Paying the bill in Korea is often a social moment — who pays, how to offer, and how to respond all carry social meaning. Knowing the right words prevents awkwardness.
제가 낼게요. 오늘은 제가 쏠게요!
(I'll pay. Today I'm treating!)
💳 What You'll Learn Today
In this lesson, you'll learn how to handle paying the bill in Korean — offering to pay, splitting the bill, accepting a treat, and navigating the back-and-forth of who pays. These are real social moments in Korean life, and knowing exactly what to say makes them smooth and natural.

💡 Key pattern: 제가 [낼/쏠]게요! — "I'll pay / I'll treat!" — the most important bill-handling phrase in Korean social life.
💬 Conversations in Action
Dialogue 1 — Offering to treat
A: 계산해 주세요. 제가 오늘 쏠게요! (Please give me the bill. I'm treating today!)
B: 아, 왜요? 나눠서 내요. (Oh, why? Let's split it.)
A: 괜찮아요. 오늘은 제가요. 다음엔 당신이 사요. (It's okay. Today it's on me. Next time you buy.)
B: 고마워요! 잘 먹었어요. 다음엔 꼭 제가 살게요. (Thank you! It was delicious. I'll definitely treat next time.)
Dialogue 2 — Splitting the bill
A: 오늘 더치페이 해요? (Are we going Dutch today?)
B: 네, 각자 내는 게 편할 것 같아요. (Yes, it'll probably be easier if we each pay our own.)
A: 그럼 카드 돼요? (Then, can I pay by card?)
B: 네, 돼요. (Yes, it works.)
🌏 Cultural Note — 쏘다 and Social Hierarchy
In Korean dining culture, the senior person (by age or position) often treats the group — this is called 쏘다. When someone says 제가 쏠게요, it's a generous social gesture and refusing too insistently can be impolite. The gracious response is to say 고마워요, 잘 먹었어요, then offer 다음엔 제가 살게요 to maintain balance. Among peers, 더치페이 (going Dutch) or 나눠서 내요 (split it) has become increasingly common and is completely accepted.

Speaking Tip
The word 쏘다 is casual and warm — it literally means "to shoot" but in context means "to treat." 제가 쏠게요 is more generous-sounding than 제가 낼게요. Use 쏠게요 with friends when you want to treat them enthusiastically; use 낼게요 in more neutral or formal situations.
