IS #151 — Handling Counter-arguments with Logic
How to acknowledge pushback, hold your ground, and redirect the conversation — all in Korean.
🔊
Iru Helper Note
In Korean professional settings, disagreeing directly can feel abrupt. Native speakers soften counter-responses by acknowledging the other view first, then redirecting with logic.
그 점은 이해해요. 다만, 제 생각엔 조금 달라요.
(I understand that point. However, I think it's a little different.)

🧠 What You'll Learn Today

When someone challenges your idea in Korean, your response matters as much as your content. Native speakers use a specific set of acknowledgment-then-redirect expressions to show they've heard the objection, validate it, and then logically steer back to their own position. This lesson gives you the full toolkit for handling pushback with confidence and grace.

📌 Counter-argument Handling Expressions

Notes
그 점은 이해해요
I understand that point
Validates before redirecting
다만
However / That said
Soft pivot; less blunt than 하지만
물론 그렇죠. 그런데
Of course. And yet...
Concede + redirect
그 부분도 맞아요. 하지만
That part is right too. But
Partial agreement before counter
제 생각엔 조금 달라요
I think it's a little different
Polite disagreement
다른 관점에서 보면
From a different perspective
Reframes without dismissing
데이터를 보면
If you look at the data
Grounds counter with evidence
그게 맞다고 해도
Even if that's right
Concedes hypothetically to redirect
제가 우려하는 부분은
The part I'm concerned about is
Names a specific logical worry
실제로는
In practice / In reality
Contrasts theory vs. reality
그렇다면
If that's the case
Uses their logic against itself
근거가 있을까요?
Is there evidence for that?
Politely asks for proof
제 입장에서는
From my position / perspective
Anchors your view without attacking
그보다 더 중요한 건
More important than that is
Redirects to your priority
💡 Key pattern: 물론 / 그 점은 이해해요 → 다만 / 그런데 → 제 생각엔 / 데이터를 보면. Acknowledge → Pivot → Redirect.

💬 Conversations in Action

In a meeting — handling pushback on a proposal:
동료: 이 방식은 너무 느린 것 같아요.
(Colleague: I think this approach is too slow.)
발표자: 물론 그렇죠. 다만, 데이터를 보면 빠른 방식이 오히려 오류율을 높여요. 그보다 더 중요한 건 정확성이에요.
(Presenter: Of course. That said, if you look at the data, faster approaches actually increase error rates. More important than that is accuracy.)
Redirecting with a different perspective:
동료: 예산이 문제예요.
(Colleague: Budget is the problem.)
발표자: 그 부분도 맞아요. 하지만 다른 관점에서 보면, 지금 투자하지 않으면 나중에 더 큰 비용이 생겨요.
(Presenter: That part is right too. But from a different perspective, if we don't invest now, there'll be even bigger costs later.)

🌏 Cultural Note — Indirect Disagreement in Korean Culture

Korean professional culture values 눈치 (reading the room) and 체면 (face-saving). Direct contradiction — even when you're right — can damage relationships. Phrases like 다만 and 물론 그렇죠 signal "I'm not attacking you, I'm adding nuance." This makes you sound more credible, not weaker. Mastering indirect disagreement is a mark of professional maturity in Korean settings.

<summary>Answer
그 점은 이해해요. 다만, 데이터를 보면 장기적으로 비용이 절감돼요.
</summary>
B. Someone says your timeline is too optimistic. Concede partially, then redirect.
<summary>Answer
그 부분도 맞아요. 하지만 제 생각엔 단계적으로 접근하면 가능해요.
</summary>
C. Someone disagrees with your strategy. Use a different perspective reframe.
<summary>Answer
다른 관점에서 보면, 이 전략이 더 안정적이에요.
</summary>
D. Someone states something as fact. Politely ask for evidence.
<summary>Answer
그 주장에 근거가 있을까요? 제가 우려하는 부분은 바로 그 점이에요.
</summary>

<summary>Answer
그게 맞다고 해도, 지금 준비해야 나중에 빠르게 움직일 수 있어요.

<summary>Answer
제 입장에서는, 이 데이터가 가장 신뢰할 수 있는 근거예요.
</summary>

<summary>Answer
물론 그렇죠. 실제로는, 팀이 이미 준비를 시작했어요.

<summary>Answer
그렇다면, 현재 방식으로는 어떻게 해결할 수 있을까요?

I. Someone downplays the risk. Name your specific concern.
<summary>Answer
제가 우려하는 부분은 바로 리스크 관리예요. 그보다 더 중요한 건 없어요.

<summary>Answer
그 점은 이해해요. 다만, 다른 관점에서 보면 다르게 볼 수 있어요. 데이터를 보면 제 방식이 더 효과적이에요. 제 입장에서는 이게 최선이에요.

Tip: The soft pivot — 다만
다만 is your best friend in Korean debate. It's softer than 하지만 and less confrontational than 그러나. Use 다만 when you want to redirect without sounding defensive. It's a professional's tool.

🔁
Want more reps?
Think of an opinion you hold strongly — about work, learning, or daily life. Now imagine someone pushing back on it. Practice the full acknowledge-pivot-redirect sequence out loud in Korean. Try it three times with different objections. This is one of the most powerful speaking skills you can build.

Pitfall: Skipping the acknowledge
Starting with 하지만 or 아니요 without acknowledging first sounds defensive and abrupt in Korean. Always validate — even briefly — before you pivot. 그 점은 이해해요 takes two seconds and saves the relationship.

Exercise 2 — Korean → English Translation

Translate each sentence naturally.
A. 그 점은 이해해요. 다만, 제 생각엔 조금 달라요.
<summary>Answer
I understand that point. However, I think it's a little different.
B. 물론 그렇죠. 그런데 데이터를 보면 다른 결과가 나와요.
<summary>Answer
Of course. And yet, if you look at the data, a different result comes out.
C. 그 부분도 맞아요. 하지만 실제로는 훨씬 복잡해요.

<summary>Answer
From my position, the team's capability is most important.
I. 근거가 있을까요? 제가 확인하고 싶어요.
<summary>Answer
Is there evidence for that? I'd like to verify it.
J. 그보다 더 중요한 건 고객의 신뢰예요. 그 점은 이해하시죠?

Grammar Tip: -다고 해도
그게 맞다고 해도 = "even if that is right." The pattern [verb/adj stem + 다고 해도] means "even if [X] is true." Use it to hypothetically grant a point before making your counter: "Even if that's true, [my point still stands]."

Exercise 3 — Complete the Sentence

Fill in the blank with a natural counter-argument expression.

Production Tip
In real conversations, you won't have time to plan. Practice saying 그 점은 이해해요. 다만... until it becomes your automatic response when you hear pushback. The pause it creates also buys you thinking time.

Exercise 4 — Dialogue Completion

Complete each dialogue with a natural counter-argument response.

<summary>Answer
그 점은 이해해요. 다만, 단계적으로 접근하면 훨씬 쉬워요.

Speaking Challenge
Pick a topic you feel strongly about. Have a friend (or imagine one) give you three different objections in a row. Handle each one with a different technique: first with 물론 그렇죠. 다만, then with 다른 관점에서 보면, then with 그게 맞다고 해도. Stay in Korean the whole time.
논리적으로 반론을 다루면, 상대방도 당신의 말을 더 신뢰하게 돼요. ✨
