대로 is a “way/state/manner” word. In -(으)ㄴ/는 대로, it means something like:

So the core image is simple: A happens in the way/state/timing that clause A gives.

🎨 The Core 대로 Family

1. V-는 대로 = as someone does/says; as soon as something happens

Use this for present, repeated, future, or immediate-next actions.
  • 제가 하는 대로 따라 하세요.
      • [je-ga ha-neun dae-ro tta-ra ha-se-yo]
      Follow as I do.
  • 선생님이 설명하는 대로 쓰세요.
      • [seon-saeng-ni-mi seol-myeong-ha-neun dae-ro sseu-se-yo]
      Write it as the teacher explains.
  • 회의가 끝나는 대로 알려 주세요.

2. V-(으)ㄴ 대로 = as someone did / according to what was done

Use this when the reference action is already completed.
  • 배운 대로 해 보세요.
      • [bae-un dae-ro hae bo-se-yo]
      Try doing it as you learned.
  • 본 대로 설명해 주세요.
      • [bon dae-ro seol-myeong-hae ju-se-yo]
      Please explain it as you saw it.
  • 들은 대로 전달했어요.
      • [deu-reun dae-ro jeon-dal-hae-sseo-yo]
      I relayed it just as I heard it.
 

3. A-(으)ㄴ 대로 = in that state / as it is, even in that condition

Use this when the first clause describes a state.
  • 바쁜 대로 최선을 다하겠습니다.
      • [ba-ppeun dae-ro choe-seo-neul da-ha-ge-sseum-ni-da]
      I’ll do my best even within this busy situation.
  • 부족한 대로 준비했어요.
      • [bu-jo-kan dae-ro jun-bi-hae-sseo-yo]
      I prepared as best I could, though it was insufficient.
  • 어려운 대로 방법을 찾아봅시다.
      • [eo-ryeo-un dae-ro bang-beo-beul cha-ja-bop-si-da]
      Let’s find a way, even though it’s difficult.
 

4. Noun + 대로 = according to / in line with the noun

This is not the main target form, but it is common.
  • 계획대로 [gye-hoek-ttae-ro] — according to plan
  • 순서대로 [sun-seo-dae-ro] — in order
  • 마음대로 [ma-eum-dae-ro] — as one wants
  • 예상대로 [ye-sang-dae-ro] — as expected

🧩 General Formation Rule

Action verb present/future: stem + -는 대로

  • 말하다 → 말하는 대로 [mal-ha-da → mal-ha-neun dae-ro]
  • 도착하다 → 도착하는 대로 [do-cha-ka-da → do-cha-ka-neun dae-ro]
  • 끝나다 → 끝나는 대로 [kkeut-na-da → kkeun-na-neun dae-ro]
  • 확인하다 → 확인하는 대로 [hwa-gi-na-da → hwa-gi-na-neun dae-ro]
 

Action verb completed: stem + -(으)ㄴ 대로

  • 보다 → 본 대로 [bo-da → bon dae-ro]
  • 듣다 → 들은 대로 [deut-tta → deu-reun dae-ro]
  • 배우다 → 배운 대로 [bae-u-da → bae-un dae-ro]
  • 약속하다 → 약속한 대로 [yak-so-ka-da → yak-so-kan dae-ro]
 

Descriptive verb/adjective: stem + -(으)ㄴ 대로

  • 바쁘다 → 바쁜 대로 [ba-ppeu-da → ba-ppeun dae-ro]
  • 어렵다 → 어려운 대로 [eo-ryeop-tta → eo-ryeo-un dae-ro]
  • 부족하다 → 부족한 대로 [bu-jo-ka-da → bu-jo-kan dae-ro]
  • 피곤하다 → 피곤한 대로 [pi-go-na-da → pi-go-nan dae-ro]
 

Spacing rule

When 대로 follows a modifier like 말하는, 들은, or 바쁜, write it spaced:
  • ✅ 말하는 대로
  • ✅ 들은 대로
  • ✅ 바쁜 대로
  • ❌ 말하는대로
 
When 대로 attaches directly after a noun as a particle-like form, it is often written attached:
  • ✅ 계획대로
  • ✅ 순서대로
  • ✅ 예상대로

Korean.go.kr and KRDIC describe 대로 as a bound noun meaning “like a certain state/situation” and also “as soon as a situation or event occurs.” Korean.go.kr examples and guidance confirm forms like 생각하는 대로, 느낀 대로, 일어난 대로, 확인되는 대로, and 답변받는 대로 with spacing before 대로. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

These are close, but not the same:
  • -(으)ㄴ/는 대로 — as / according to / as soon as; follows a way, state, action, or timing.
  • 있는 그대로 — just as it is; unchanged.
  • -(으)ㄴ/는 바에 따라 — in accordance with what was stated/decided; very formal.
  • -자마자 — as soon as; immediate sequence, stronger and tighter.
  • -(으)ㄹ 대로 — to the limit / as much as possible; 지칠 대로 지치다.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ 말하는대로 → ✅ 말하는 대로.
  • ❌ 도착한 대로 연락할게요 for future “as soon as I arrive” → ✅ 도착하는 대로 연락할게요.
  • ❌ Confusing -는 대로 with -(으)ㄹ 대로.
      • ✅ 도착하는 대로 = as soon as arriving; 지칠 대로 = to the limit of exhaustion.
  • ❌ Using 대로 when you mean “place where” → ✅ use 데: 가는 데로 = to the place someone goes; 가는 대로 = as someone goes / as soon as someone goes.
  • ⚠️ -자마자 is more immediate; -는 대로 can be softer and often appears in promises, notices, and polite plans.
 
🧭 Bottom line: -(으)ㄴ/는 대로 follows a way, state, action, or timing. Use it for as instructed, as heard, as promised, and as soon as ready Korean.
