감탄사 [gam-tan-sa] ("exclamations" or "interjections") are the tiny bursts of emotion that escape before you even form a full sentence — surprise, excitement, fear, sympathy. In English we have "Wow!", "Whoa!", "No way!" — Korean has its own set, and using them naturally (with the right energy!) makes you sound much more like a native speaker reacting in real time. 🤯

🧭 Speaking Tip

The energy is everything — 감탄사 sound flat and odd if said in a monotone. Let your pitch jump up and your face react too! Koreans use these constantly in casual speech, so don't be shy about reacting BIG when something genuinely surprises, delights, or worries you. 🤯

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

❌ Saying 대박! in a very formal business meeting → ✅ 대박! is casual slang — in formal settings, use 정말요? or 놀랍네요 (that's surprising) instead.

❌ Using 헉! for happy news → ✅ 헉! implies shock/alarm — for happy surprises, reach for 우와! or 대박! instead.

❌ Thinking 어떡해! always means "Oh no!" → ✅ It also means "Aww!" for cute things — context (and tone) decides.

❌ Reacting late, after the moment has passed → ✅ 감탄사 work best fired IMMEDIATELY — practice reacting in real time.
