TL;DR 🦄
  • -았/었어야 했는데 [-at/eot-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] means I should have… but…
  • 😬 Use it when something needed to happen in the past, but it did not happen, so you feel regret or disappointment now.
  • 🧩 Build it from the past 아/어 shape + 야 했는데: 공부하다 [gong-bu-ha-da] → 공부했어야 했는데 [gong-bu-hae-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = I should have studied, but…

🌈 The Big Picture

Regret grammar is for the tiny movie theater in your brain that replays yesterday and says, “Well, that could have gone better.” 🎬😅

-았/었어야 했는데 [-at/eot-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] says that an action or state should have happened in the past, but it did not happen or did not happen enough. The ending 는데 [neun-de] leaves the feeling open: “but…” / “and unfortunately…” / “which is a shame…”

Tiny regret ladder:
  • 공부해야 해요. [gong-bu-hae-ya hae-yo] = I have to study. 📚
  • 공부했어야 했어요. [gong-bu-hae-sseo-ya hae-sseo-yo] = I should have studied. 📚
  • 공부했어야 했는데 시험을 망쳤어요. [gong-bu-hae-sseo-ya haet-neun-de si-heo-meul mang-chyeo-sseo-yo] = I should have studied, but I failed the exam. 📚💥

This pattern can be used with verbs and adjectives/descriptive verbs. For example, 일찍 왔어야 했는데 [il-jjik wa-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = “I should have come early, but…” and 날씨가 좋았어야 했는데 [nal-ssi-ga jo-a-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = “The weather should have been good, but…” 🌦️

🎨 The Core Regret Family

Main pattern
  • 동사/형용사 = verb/adjective + -았/었어야 했는데 = should have done/been…, but…
How to choose or
  • Many stems with or use 았어야 했는데:
    • 가다 [ga-da] = to go 🚶 → 갔어야 했는데 [ga-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = I should have gone, but…
    • 사다 [sa-da] = to buy 🛒 → 샀어야 했는데 [sa-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = I should have bought it, but…
    • 좋다 [jo-ta] = to be good 🌤️ → 좋았어야 했는데 [jo-a-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = it should have been good, but…
  • Most other stems use 었어야 했는데:
    • 먹다 [meok-da] = to eat 🍚 → 먹었어야 했는데 [meo-geo-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = I should have eaten, but…
    • 읽다 [ik-da] = to read 📄 → 읽었어야 했는데 [il-geo-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = I should have read it, but…
    • 늦다 [neut-da] = to be late ⏰ → 늦지 않았어야 했는데 [neut-jji a-na-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = I should not have been late, but…
  • 하다 [ha-da] becomes 했어야 했는데 [hae-sseo-ya haet-neun-de]:
    • 공부하다 [gong-bu-ha-da] = to study 📚 → 공부했어야 했는데 [gong-bu-hae-sseo-ya haet-neun-de]
    • 확인하다 [hwa-gin-ha-da] = to check ✅ → 확인했어야 했는데 [hwa-gin-hae-sseo-ya haet-neun-de]

Useful regret vocabulary for this lesson:
  • 미리 [mi-ri] = in advance, 일찍 [il-jjik] = early, 천천히 [cheon-cheon-hi] = slowly, 조금 더 [jo-geum deo] = a little more, 제대로 [je-dae-ro] = properly.
  • 시험 [si-heom] = exam, 숙제 [suk-jje] = homework, 약속 [yak-sok] = appointment/promise, 버스 [beo-seu] = bus, 우산 [u-san] = umbrella, 자료 [ja-ryo] = materials, 보고서 [bo-go-seo] = report, 이메일 [i-me-il] = email, 문서 [mun-seo] = document, 회의 [hoe-ui] = meeting.
  • 공부하다 [gong-bu-ha-da] = to study, 준비하다 [jun-bi-ha-da] = to prepare, 확인하다 [hwa-gin-ha-da] = to check, 보내다 [bo-nae-da] = to send, 읽다 [ik-da] = to read, 가다 [ga-da] = to go, 오다 [o-da] = to come, 자다 [ja-da] = to sleep, 먹다 [meok-da] = to eat, 사다 [sa-da] = to buy.

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

1. Past action regret
  • 시험 전에 더 공부했어야 했는데 너무 늦었어요. [si-heom jeo-ne deo gong-bu-hae-sseo-ya haet-neun-de neo-mu neu-jeo-sseo-yo] = I should have studied more before the exam, but it’s too late. 📚
    • 시험 전에 [si-heom jeo-ne] = before the exam, [deo] = more.

2. Missed preparation
  • 회의 자료를 미리 확인했어야 했는데 못 봤어요. [hoe-ui ja-ryo-reul mi-ri hwa-gin-hae-sseo-ya haet-neun-de mot bwa-sseo-yo] = I should have checked the meeting materials in advance, but I didn’t see them. 📋
    • 못 봤어요 [mot bwa-sseo-yo] = did not see / could not see.

3. State regret
  • 날씨가 좋았어야 했는데 비가 왔어요. [nal-ssi-ga jo-a-sseo-ya haet-neun-de bi-ga wa-sseo-yo] = The weather should have been good, but it rained. 🌧️
    • 날씨 [nal-ssi] = weather, 비가 오다 [bi-ga o-da] = to rain.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Use the past 아/어 shape, then attach 야 했는데.

🚨 Exception Rule(s)

These are common shape changes to keep clean:
  • 하다 → 했어야 했는데 [ha-da → hae-sseo-ya haet-neun-de]
  • 오다 → 왔어야 했는데 [o-da → wa-sseo-ya haet-neun-de]
  • 듣다 → 들었어야 했는데 [deut-da → deu-reo-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] — ㄷ changes to ㄹ before the vowel.
  • 걷다 → 걸었어야 했는데 [geot-da → geo-reo-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] — another common ㄷ-change verb.
  • 쓰다 → 썼어야 했는데 [sseu-da → sseo-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] — ㅡ drops and the vowel becomes .

📚 Cross-check note

This lesson’s regret pattern was cross-checked against korean.go.kr guidance on forms with 해야 했다 and past regret usage such as 보고했어야 했다, plus standard 아/어 conjugation rules. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • -았/었어야 했는데 [-at/eot-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = should have…, but…; emphasizes the missed necessity or ideal past action. 😬
  • -(으)ㄹ걸 그랬어요 [-(eu)l-geol geu-rae-sseo-yo] = I should have…; often sounds like personal hindsight or “I wish I had…” 💭
  • -지 말았어야 했는데 [-ji ma-ra-sseo-ya haet-neun-de] = should not have…, but…; use for regretting an action you did. 🚫

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 공부해야 했는데 for “I should have studied, but…” → ✅ 공부했어야 했는데 — include the past to show missed past action clearly.
  • 보내었어야 했는데 in everyday speech → ✅ 보냈어야 했는데 — contraction is natural and common.
  • 오었어야 했는데 → ✅ 왔어야 했는데오다 becomes .
  • ❌ Using this pattern for “I must do it now” → ✅ Use 해야 해요 [hae-ya hae-yo] for present/future obligation.
  • ❌ Forgetting the consequence after 는데 → ✅ Add the result when helpful: 늦잠을 잤어요 [neut-jja-meul ja-sseo-yo] = I overslept.

😬 With -았/었어야 했는데, you can express regret without turning into a time-traveling puddle. Learn it, sigh once, and move forward. 🚀
