๐ŸŒˆ The Big Picture

To say "I have to" or "I must" in Korean, attach -์•„/์–ด์•ผ ํ•ด์š” [-a/eo-ya hae-yo] or -์•„/์–ด์•ผ ๋ผ์š” [-a/eo-ya dwae-yo] to a verb stem. Both versions mean the same thing and are used interchangeably in speech โ€” ํ•ด์š” comes from ํ•˜๋‹ค ("to do") and ๋ผ์š” comes from ๋˜๋‹ค ("to become/work out"), but functionally they both express "must/have to."
The vowel choice follows the same rule as -์•„/์–ด์š”: stems ending in ใ… or ใ…— take -์•„์•ผ, everything else takes -์–ด์•ผ.
  • ๊ฐ€๋‹ค โ†’ ๊ฐ€์•ผ ํ•ด์š” โ€” "(I) have to go"
  • ๋จน๋‹ค โ†’ ๋จน์–ด์•ผ ํ•ด์š” โ€” "(I) have to eat"
  • ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•˜๋‹ค โ†’ ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•ด์•ผ ํ•ด์š” โ€” "(I) have to study"

๐ŸŽญ Saying You DON'T Have To

The opposite โ€” "don't have to" โ€” is NOT made by simply negating ํ•ด์•ผ ํ•ด์š”. Instead, Korean uses -์ง€ ์•Š์•„๋„ ๋ผ์š” or, more commonly in speech, ์•ˆ -์•„/์–ด๋„ ๋ผ์š” [an ... a/eo-do dwae-yo] โ€” "it's okay even if you don't..."
  • ์•ˆ ๊ฐ€๋„ ๋ผ์š” โ€” "You don't have to go" (lit. "it's okay even if you don't go")
  • ์˜ค๋Š˜ ์•ˆ ์™€๋„ ๋ผ์š” โ€” "You don't have to come today"
Be careful: ๊ฐ€๋ฉด ์•ˆ ๋ผ์š” means something completely different โ€” "You can't go" (prohibition), not "you don't have to go." Mixing these up can really change your meaning!

B: ์•„๋‹ˆ์š”, ์˜ค๋Š˜๊นŒ์ง€ ๋ณด๊ณ ์„œ ๋๋‚ด์•ผ ํ•ด์š”. ์•ผ๊ทผํ•ด์•ผ ํ•  ๊ฒƒ ๊ฐ™์•„์š”.
A: "Do you have time this evening?" B: "No, I have to finish the report by today. I think I'll have to work overtime."
๐Ÿฆ„ Grammar note: ํ•  ๊ฒƒ ๊ฐ™์•„์š” ("I think I'll have to...") softens the necessity with a guess, making it sound less rigid.

๐Ÿฆ„ Grammar note: ์•ˆ ์™€๋„ ๋ผ์š” ("you don't have to come") vs ์™€๋„ ๊ดœ์ฐฎ์•„์š” ("it's okay to come") โ€” both express permission/flexibility.

A: "Do I absolutely have to take the medicine?" B: "Yes, you must take it three times a day without fail. Take it after meals."
๐Ÿฆ„ Grammar note: ๋“œ์…”์•ผ ํ•ด์š” is the honorific form of ๋จน์–ด์•ผ ํ•ด์š” โ€” used when talking to/about someone you should show respect to, like a patient from a pharmacist.

๐Ÿงญ Speaking Tip

In casual speech, Koreans often drop ํ•ด์š”/๋ผ์š” and just say the stem with rising intonation when it's obvious from context: "์˜ค๋Š˜๊นŒ์ง€ ํ•ด์•ผ ๋ผโ€ฆ" trailing off can imply frustration or resignation about a deadline. Also, -์•„/์–ด์•ผ ๋˜๋Š”๋ฐ (with -๋Š”๋ฐ attached) is extremely common for expressing "I have to... but..." โ€” e.g., ๊ฐ€์•ผ ๋˜๋Š”๋ฐ ์‹œ๊ฐ„์ด ์—†์–ด์š” ("I have to go, but I don't have time") โ€” a great way to express a conflict between obligation and reality.

โš ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • โŒ Confusing ์•ˆ ๊ฐ€๋„ ๋ผ์š” ("you don't have to go") with ๊ฐ€๋ฉด ์•ˆ ๋ผ์š” ("you can't go") โ€” these have opposite meanings despite looking similar!
  • โŒ Forgetting the vowel harmony rule โ€” it's ๋จน์–ด์•ผ ํ•ด์š”, not ๋จน์•„์•ผ ํ•ด์š”. Stems with ใ…/ใ…— take -์•„์•ผ, all others take -์–ด์•ผ.
  • โŒ Using ํ•ด์•ผ ํ•ด์š” when talking about someone deserving respect without the honorific โ€” say ๋“œ์…”์•ผ ํ•ด์š” (not ๋จน์–ด์•ผ ํ•ด์š”) to a patient, elder, or customer.
  • โŒ Overusing ๊ผญ ("absolutely/definitely") โ€” it adds emphasis, but using it in every sentence can sound overly intense. Save it for genuinely important obligations.
You've got the tools to talk about your responsibilities like a pro โ€” ํž˜๋‚ด์„ธ์š”! ๐Ÿ“Œโœจ
