๐ The Big Picture
Korean has three main ways to talk about the future. -(์ผ)ใน ๊ฑฐ์์ states a plan or prediction ("I'm going to..."), -(์ผ)ใน๊ฒ์ announces a decision made on the spot, often a promise to the listener ("I will... [I promise]"), and -(์ผ)๋ ค๊ณ ํด์ expresses intention ("I'm planning to..."). ๐ฎ
๐ญ -(์ผ)ใน ๊ฑฐ์์ vs -(์ผ)ใน๊ฒ์
The key difference is about WHO the statement is for:
- -(์ผ)ใน ๊ฑฐ์์ โ describing your plan/prediction, neutral ๐
- -(์ผ)ใน๊ฒ์ โ making a promise/commitment TO the listener ๐ค
- ๋ด์ผ ๊ฐ ๊ฑฐ์์ [nae-il gal geo-ye-yo] โ "I'm going (tomorrow)" (plan) ๐
- ๋ด๊ฐ ์ด๊ฒ์ [nae-ga sal-ge-yo] โ "I'll buy/pay" (offer/promise) ๐ณ
- ๋จผ์ ๊ฐ๊ฒ์ [meon-jeo gal-ge-yo] โ "I'll go first" (announcing to others) ๐ถ

๐งญ Speaking Tip
Use -(์ผ)ใน๊ฒ์ when YOUR action directly affects or involves the listener โ promises, offers, announcements ("I'll pay," "I'll call you," "I'll go first"). Use -(์ผ)ใน ๊ฑฐ์์ for general plans or facts about the future that don't require listener involvement. Both end conversations on a forward-looking note! ๐ฎ
โ ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge
โ Using -(์ผ)ใน๊ฒ์ for plans unrelated to the listener โ โ
"I'm going to travel next month" = ์ฌํ ๊ฐ ๊ฑฐ์์, not ๊ฐ๊ฒ์.
โ Forgetting the ใน irregular: dropping the final ใน before adding -(์ผ)ใน โ โ
์ด๋ค โ ์ด ๊ฑฐ์์ (not ์ด์ ๊ฑฐ์์).
โ Confusing -(์ผ)๋ ค๊ณ ํด์ (planning to) with -(์ผ)ใน ๊ฑฐ์์ (will/going to) โ โ
๋ ค๊ณ ํด์ suggests "considering/intending," ๊ฑฐ์์ sounds more decided.
โ Saying ๊ณง for things far in the future โ โ
๊ณง = very soon (minutes/hours); use ๋ค์์/๋์ค์ for general future.
