ย
๐ The Big Picture
In Korean culture, bluntly saying ์ซ์ดํด์ ("I hate it") can sound harsh, even when it's accurate. Instead, Koreans soften dislike with phrases like ๋ณ๋ก์์ ("not really great") or ์ ์ทจํฅ์ด ์๋์์ ("it's not my taste") โ these communicate "no thanks" without sounding rude. ๐
๐ญ Levels of "No Thanks"
From mildest to strongest:
- ๊ทธ๋ฅ... [geu-dak] โ "not particularly..." (trailing off, very soft) ๐ค
- ๋ณ๋ก์์ [byeol-lo-ye-yo] โ "not really / so-so" ๐
- ์ ์ทจํฅ์ด ์๋์์ [je chwi-hyang-i a-ni-e-yo] โ "it's not my taste" ๐
- ๋ง์์ ์ ๋ค์ด์ [ma-eu-me an deu-reo-yo] โ "I don't like it" (more direct) ๐ฃ
- ์ง์ง ์ซ์ด์ [jin-jja si-reo-yo] โ "I really dislike it" (reserve for close friends) ๐

๐งญ Speaking Tip
Pairing dislike with a compliment first โ ๋ฉ๋ก๋๋ ๊ด์ฐฎ์๋ฐ... ("the melody is fine, but...") โ is a classic Korean "sandwich" technique: say something positive, then your real opinion, then soften with ์ฌ๋๋ง๋ค ๋ค๋ฅด๋๊น์ ("everyone's different"). This keeps the conversation friendly. ๐งญ
โ ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge
โ Saying ์ซ์ด์ ("I hate it") about someone's recommendation โ โ
Use ๋ณ๋ก์์ or ์ ์ทจํฅ์ด ์๋์์ for politeness.
โ Leaving a sentence with just "๊ทผ๋ฐ..." and nothing else, sounding incomplete โ โ
That's actually intentional! Trailing off with ๊ทผ๋ฐ... or ์ข... IS the polite way to imply dislike.
โ Forgetting to soften criticism with a positive first โ โ
Use the "sandwich": positive + ๊ทผ๋ฐ/-๋๋ฐ + soft negative.
โ Using ์ ๋ผ์ to mean "I don't like it" โ โ
์ ๋ผ์ means "not allowed/not possible," not a taste opinion.
You can now disagree without any awkwardness โ ์ผ์ค ์์ด์! ๐โจ
