TL;DR 🦄
- 🧵 -(으)ㄹ 운명이다 means “to be destined/fated to…” and carries a strong sense that the outcome is unavoidable.
- 🎭 It sounds literary, dramatic, philosophical, or emotionally weighty — perfect for novels, films, speeches, and reflective writing, but too grand for ordinary scheduling.
- ⚖️ Use it with care: -게 되다 feels like an arranged result, 수밖에 없다 feels like no choice, and -(으)ㄹ 운명이다 feels like fate itself wrote the script.
🎧 Iru Helper Note — You can type any Korean word or sentence from this lesson into Korean Helper Widgets to hear it read aloud. For dramatic grammar like 운명이다 (to be fate/destiny), listen for the emotional weight in the full sentence, not just the ending.
🌈 The Big Picture
운명 means fate, destiny, or an unavoidable course of events. When Korean adds a future noun-modifying form before it — -(으)ㄹ 운명 — the phrase means “a fate in which someone/something will do or become something.”
This pattern is not casual “I guess this will happen.” It is heavier: destiny, doom, inevitable separation, a heroic mission, a tragic ending, or an almost-romantic “we were meant to meet.” 🎬
Use -(으)ㄹ 운명이다 when the sentence needs a sense of inevitability. If the context is ordinary — a meeting time, a homework deadline, a lunch plan — choose a less dramatic pattern unless you are joking.
🎨 The Core Destiny/Fate Family
The central pattern is:
- 동사 어간 + ㄹ/을 운명이다 = to be destined/fated to do something
- 만나다 (to meet) → 만날 운명이다 (to be destined to meet)
- 잊히다 (to be forgotten) → 잊힐 운명이다 (to be destined to be forgotten)
- 사라지다 (to disappear) → 사라질 운명이다 (to be destined to disappear)
- 명사 + 의 운명이다 = to be the fate/destiny of a noun
- 그것은 제국의 운명이었다. = That was the empire’s fate. 🏛️
- 운명을 받아들이다 = to accept one’s fate
- 운명을 거스르다 = to go against/defy fate
- 운명처럼 = like fate / as if destined
Register note: 운명이다 is emotionally loaded. It often appears in narration, essays, drama dialogue, headlines, philosophy, history, romance, and tragedy. In casual conversation, it can sound poetic, jokingly dramatic, or melodramatic depending on tone.
🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence
- 두 사람은 결국 다시 만날 운명이었어요.
(The two people were destined to meet again eventually.) 💞
Here, 결국 (eventually/in the end) supports the fate nuance, and 다시 만나다 means “to meet again.”
- 그 오래된 항구는 역사의 뒤안길로 사라질 운명이었다.
(The old harbor was destined to disappear into the shadows of history.) ⚓
역사의 뒤안길 is a literary phrase meaning “the back road/shadows of history,” so the sentence sounds written and reflective.
- 주인공은 왕좌를 물려받을 운명이 아니라 스스로 길을 만들 운명이었다.
(The protagonist was not destined to inherit the throne, but destined to make their own path.) 👑
This contrast shows that 운명 can describe not only doom, but also mission, identity, and narrative direction.
🧩 General Formation Rule
Use the future noun-modifying form before 운명이다:
- Verb stem ending in a vowel or ㄹ + ㄹ 운명이다
- 가다 → 갈 운명이다 (to be destined to go)
- 살다 → 살 운명이다 (to be destined to live) — the stem already ends in ㄹ, so do not add another ㄹ.
- Verb stem ending in a consonant + 을 운명이다
- 받다 → 받을 운명이다 (to be destined to receive)
- 잊히다 ends in a vowel sound before the ending → 잊힐 운명이다 (to be destined to be forgotten)
Phonetic note: In speech, 운명이다 is pronounced with smooth linking between syllables, but the grammar itself does not create a special sound change. The emotional weight comes from meaning and context, not a hidden pronunciation trick.
📚 Cross-check note
The noun 운명 and related forms were checked against 국립국어원 / Korean.go.kr dictionary resources; example usage was also reviewed for natural register and collocation.
🪞 Synonym Alert
- 숙명 = destiny/fate with a solemn, unavoidable, often philosophical tone; more formal and heavier than 운명.
- 팔자 = one’s lot/fate in life; everyday, sometimes fatalistic or self-mocking.
- 천명 = Heaven’s mandate/decree; formal, historical, philosophical, or religious.
- 필연 = inevitability/necessity; more abstract and logical than emotional.
- 인연 = destined connection/bond, often between people; warmer and more relationship-focused than 운명.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ 내일 회의에 참석할 운명이에요. → ✅ 내일 회의에 참석하게 됐어요. (A meeting is an arrangement, not usually cosmic fate.) 📅
- ❌ 숙제를 제출할 운명이다. → ✅ 숙제를 제출해야 한다. (Use obligation grammar for homework unless you are joking dramatically.) 📄
- ❌ 그는 실패할 운명이다 as a casual criticism → ✅ Use carefully; it sounds harsh, final, and judgmental. 🥀
- ❌ Treating 운명 and 인연 as identical → ✅ 운명 is fate/destiny broadly; 인연 is a destined connection or bond. 🧵
- ❌ Forgetting register → ✅ In ordinary speech, 운명이다 can sound poetic, theatrical, or intentionally exaggerated. 🎭
✨ When you use -(으)ㄹ 운명이다, do not just predict the future — make the future feel written in invisible ink. 🖋️
