Giving directions over the phone is harder than in person because you can't point. Korean direction phrases are landmark-based — you navigate by what you see, not compass points. 나오면, 나오시면 (when you come out) is a key linking phrase.

지하철역에서 나오시면 바로 오른쪽에 편의점이 보여요. 거기서 직진하시면 돼요.

(When you come out of the subway station, you'll see a convenience store right on the right. Just go straight from there.)

💡 Key pattern: ~ 에서 나오시면 → [방향] → [landmark] 보이면 → 거기서 [next instruction]. = "When you come out of ~, [direction], when you see [landmark], from there [next step]." This step-by-step landmark chain is how Koreans give directions naturally.

🌏 Cultural Note — Landmark Navigation in Korea

Korean directions are almost always landmark-based, not street-name-based. Streets rarely have names in common usage — instead, people say 편의점 옆에 (next to the convenience store), 은행 앞에 (in front of the bank), 카페 지나서 (past the café). When you hear Korean directions, follow the landmarks, not abstract points. 나오시면 (when you come out) and ~ 이 보이면 (when you see ~) are the two most important linking phrases in any direction chain.

Delivery Tip

Give directions in steps, not all at once: 나오시면 → 오른쪽으로 → 편의점 보이면 → 골목으로. Pause between each step so the caller can follow along. 확인하셨어요? (Did you find it?) at each landmark keeps both of you on track.

Pitfall: 앞 vs 옆

~ 앞에 있어요 = in FRONT of ~ (facing it). ~ 옆에 있어요 = next to / BESIDE ~. These are different positions. 카페 앞에 있어요 means you're right at the café entrance — 카페 옆에 있어요 means you're to the side of it.

Grammar Tip

-시면 (if/when you [do]) is the polite conditional: 나오시면 = "when you come out," 건너시면 = "when you cross." This makes directions sound guided and natural rather than commanding. 직진하시면 돼요 = "if you go straight, that'll work / just go straight."

Build your direction in the landmark chain: exit → direction → landmark → next step. 나오시면 → 오른쪽으로 → 편의점 보이면 → 골목으로. Each step uses the previous landmark as the anchor for the next instruction.

Conversation Tip

If someone is lost, the most helpful thing to do is step outside: 지금 제가 밖에 나와 있을게요. 보이세요? (I'll come outside now. Can you see me?) This immediately solves the problem without more complex directions.
