Explaining to a Technician
Describe problems clearly to repair staff, IT support, or service technicians β in Korean.
Iru Helper Note
Whether it's a broken appliance, a phone glitch, or a plumbing issue, being able to describe the problem, the symptom, and the timing clearly in Korean will get you the help you need faster.
νΈλν°μ΄ κ°μκΈ° κΊΌμ‘μ΄μ. μΆ©μ λ μ λΌμ.
(My phone suddenly turned off. It won't charge either.)

π§ What You'll Learn Today
When something breaks or malfunctions in Korea, you'll need to explain the problem clearly to a repair technician, customer service agent, or IT support staff. This lesson teaches you the vocabulary and sentence structures to describe what's wrong, when it started, and what you've already tried β so you can get efficient help in any technical or repair situation.
π Technician Explanation Expressions
Expression | Meaning | Notes |
κ³ μ₯λ¬μ΄μ | It's broken / It broke down | General malfunction |
μλμ΄ μ λΌμ | It's not working | Functional failure |
μΌμ§μ§ μμμ | It won't turn on | Power/start failure |
κΊΌμ‘μ΄μ | It turned off / shut down | Sudden power loss |
μ΄μν μλ¦¬κ° λμ | It's making a strange noise | Symptom description |
νλ©΄μ΄ μ λμμ | The screen isn't displaying | Display failure |
λλ €μ‘μ΄μ | It slowed down | Performance issue |
κ°μκΈ° | Suddenly / all of a sudden | Timing marker |
~λΆν° μ΄μνμ΄μ | It's been strange since ~ | Onset timing |
μ΄λ―Έ μλν΄λ΄€λλ° | I already tried [something] | What's been attempted |
μΈμ λΆν°μΈμ§ | Since when / from what point | Time of onset question |
μμ§λ μ λΌμ | It's still not working | Ongoing problem |
νμΈν΄ μ£ΌμΈμ | Please check it | Request for diagnosis |
μ리 κ°λ₯ν΄μ? | Is repair possible? | Asking about repairability |
π‘ Key pattern: κ³ μ₯λ¬μ΄μ / μλμ΄ μ λΌμ + [when: κ°μκΈ°/μ΄μ λΆν°] + [symptom: μ΄μν μλ¦¬κ° λμ/νλ©΄μ΄ μ λμμ] + νμΈν΄ μ£ΌμΈμ β this 4-part structure (problem β timing β symptom β request) is what technicians need to help you efficiently.
π¬ Conversations in Action
Dialogue 1 β Phone Repair
A: λ¬΄μ¨ λ¬Έμ μμ? (What's the problem?)
B: νΈλν°μ΄ κ°μκΈ° κΊΌμ‘μ΄μ. μΆ©μ λ μ λκ³ , μΌμ§μ§λ μμμ. (My phone suddenly turned off. It won't charge and it won't turn on either.)
A: μΈμ λΆν° μ΄λ κ² λμ΄μ? (Since when has it been like this?)
B: μ΄μ λΆν°μ. μ΄λ―Έ μ¬μμλ μλν΄λ΄€λλ° μμ§λ μ λΌμ. νμΈν΄ μ£ΌμΈμ. (Since yesterday. I already tried restarting it but it's still not working. Please check it.)
Dialogue 2 β Appliance Repair
A: μ΄λκ° λ¬Έμ μμ? (Where's the problem?)
B: μΈνκΈ°κ° μλμ΄ μ λΌμ. μ΄μν μλ¦¬κ° λλ€κ° κΊΌμ‘μ΄μ. (The washing machine isn't working. It was making a strange noise and then it turned off.)
A: κ°μκΈ°μ? (Suddenly?)
B: λ€, κ°μκΈ°μ. μ€λ μμΉ¨λΆν° μ΄μνμ΄μ. μ리 κ°λ₯ν΄μ? (Yes, suddenly. It's been strange since this morning. Is repair possible?)
π Cultural Note β Service Culture in Korea
Korean technicians and service staff generally prefer clear, sequential problem descriptions over vague complaints. Being able to say μΈμ λΆν° (since when), μ΄λ€ μ¦μ (what symptom), and μ΄λ―Έ ν΄λ΄€λλ° (what you already tried) signals that you're informed and makes their job easier. In Korea, computer/phone repair shops (ν° μ리μ ), appliance service centers (μλΉμ€ μΌν°), and building maintenance (κ΄λ¦¬μ¬λ¬΄μ) are all places where this vocabulary will serve you well.

Want more reps?
Practice reporting three different broken items (phone, washing machine, computer) using the 4-part structure: problem β timing β symptom β request. Each scenario should take less than 30 seconds to describe clearly. That's real-world readiness.

Pitfall: κ³ μ₯λ¬μ΄μ vs. μλμ΄ μ λΌμ
κ³ μ₯λ¬μ΄μ implies physical damage or a breakdown. μλμ΄ μ λΌμ means it simply doesn't function β software or mechanical. When in doubt, μλμ΄ μ λΌμ is safer and more general.

μ΄μν μλ¦¬κ° λλ€κ° κΊΌμ‘μ΄μ means "it was making a noise and then turned off." ~λ€κ° links two sequential events where the first stops as the second begins. Very useful for describing malfunction sequences.

Conversation Tip
Korean technicians often ask λ¨μ΄λ¨λ Έμ΄μ? (did you drop it?) to assess damage type. Knowing how to say "no, it just suddenly stopped" β κ·Έλ₯ κ°μκΈ° μ λμ΄μ β protects you from being charged for accidental damage you didn't cause.
