TL;DR 🦄
  • 마다 [ma-da] means every / each / whenever.
  • Attach it directly after a noun: 날마다 [nal-ma-da] — every day, 사람마다 [sa-ram-ma-da] — each person.
  • It works especially well with time words, people, places, and repeated situations: 아침마다 커피를 마셔요. [a-chim-ma-da keo-pi-reul ma-syeo-yo] — I drink coffee every morning.

to hear 날마다 [nal-ma-da], 아침마다 [a-chim-ma-da], 사람마다 [sa-ram-ma-da], and 집마다 [jim-ma-da]. The particle is short, but it makes repetition sound natural. 🎧

🌈 The Big Picture

마다 turns a noun into “every noun” or “each noun.”
  • [nal] — day
  • 날마다 [nal-ma-da] — every day
  • 사람 [sa-ram] — person
  • 사람마다 [sa-ram-ma-da] — every person / each person
Plain sentence:
  • 아침에 커피를 마셔요. [a-chi-me keo-pi-reul ma-syeo-yo] — I drink coffee in the morning. ☕
With 마다:
  • 아침마다 커피를 마셔요. [a-chim-ma-da keo-pi-reul ma-syeo-yo] — I drink coffee every morning. ☕
It answers questions like:
  • How often?
  • For each person?
  • At every place?
  • Whenever this happens?

🎨 Core Pattern

Basic shape

  • 명사 + 마다
  • noun + 마다
Examples:
  • 날마다 [nal-ma-da] — every day
  • 아침마다 [a-chim-ma-da] — every morning
  • 주말마다 [ju-mal-ma-da] — every weekend
  • 사람마다 [sa-ram-ma-da] — every person / each person
  • 집마다 [jim-ma-da] — every house
  • 나라마다 [na-ra-ma-da] — every country / each country
No batchim rule needed. Just add 마다:
  • 날 + 마다 → 날마다
  • 학교 + 마다 → 학교마다
  • 사람 + 마다 → 사람마다
  • 나무 + 마다 → 나무마다

🛠️ How It Works in Sentences

  1. 날마다 한국어를 공부해요. [nal-ma-da han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-hae-yo] — I study Korean every day. 🇰🇷
      • 날마다 = every day.
  1. 아침마다 운동해요. [a-chim-ma-da un-dong-hae-yo] — I exercise every morning. 🏃
      • 아침마다 = every morning.
  1. 사람마다 생각이 달라요. [sa-ram-ma-da saeng-ga-gi dal-la-yo] — Each person thinks differently. 🧠
      • 사람마다 = each person.
  1. 나라마다 문화가 달라요. [na-ra-ma-da mun-hwa-ga dal-la-yo] — Every country has a different culture. 🌏
      • 나라마다 = each country.
  1. 볼 때마다 웃어요. [bol ttae-ma-da u-seo-yo] — I laugh every time I see it. 😂
      • 때마다 = every time / whenever.

🧩 General Formation Rule

1. Time words + 마다

Use this for repeated habits or schedules:
  • 날마다 [nal-ma-da] — every day
  • 아침마다 [a-chim-ma-da] — every morning
  • 밤마다 [bam-ma-da] — every night
  • 주말마다 [ju-mal-ma-da] — every weekend
  • 월요일마다 [wo-ryo-il-ma-da] — every Monday

2. Group nouns + 마다

Use this when every member has something:
  • 사람마다 [sa-ram-ma-da] — each person
  • 학생마다 [hak-saeng-ma-da] — each student
  • 집마다 [jim-ma-da] — every house
  • 나라마다 [na-ra-ma-da] — each country

3. 때마다 = every time / whenever

Use 때마다 after a noun phrase or verb-modifying phrase:
  • 방학 때마다 여행해요. [bang-hak ttae-ma-da yeo-haeng-hae-yo] — I travel every vacation.
  • 비가 올 때마다 생각나요. [bi-ga ol ttae-ma-da saeng-gak-na-yo] — I think of it whenever it rains.

🔄 vs 마다

Korean also has [mae], which means “every” before some time nouns.
  • 매일 [mae-il] — every day
  • 매주 [mae-ju] — every week
  • 매달 [mae-dal] — every month
  • 매년 [mae-nyeon] — every year
Compare:
  • 매일 한국어를 공부해요. [mae-il han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-hae-yo] — I study Korean every day.
  • 날마다 한국어를 공부해요. [nal-ma-da han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-hae-yo] — I study Korean every day.
Both can work, but 마다 is more flexible because it attaches to many nouns:
  • 사람마다
  • 매사람 ❌ unnatural for “each person”

🪞 Related Nuance: “Each one is different”

마다 is very useful for comparing members of a group:
  • 사람마다 취향이 달라요. [sa-ram-ma-da chwi-hyang-i dal-la-yo] — Each person has different tastes.
  • 집마다 분위기가 달라요. [jim-ma-da bun-wi-gi-ga dal-la-yo] — Every house has a different atmosphere.
  • 나라마다 음식이 달라요. [na-ra-ma-da eum-shi-gi dal-la-yo] — Food differs from country to country.
This pattern often pairs with:
  • 다르다 [da-reu-da] — to be different
  • 있다 [it-tta] — to exist / have
  • 많다 [man-ta] — to be many
  • 좋아하다 [jo-a-ha-da] — to like

📚 Cross-check note

The particle 마다 was checked against korean.go.kr and standard Korean grammar references. It is used after nouns to mean “every / each,” and related words like 각각 [gak-kkak] can also express “each respectively” in more formal or distributive contexts. ✅

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ Adding 마다 before the noun → ✅ Put it after the noun: 아침마다, not 마다 아침.
  • ❌ Using a batchim rule → ✅ No special sound choice: just attach 마다.
  • ❌ Confusing 마다 with → ✅ 마다 = every/each; = only.
  • ❌ Using with every noun → ✅ 매일 is okay, but 사람마다 is the natural “each person.”
  • ❌ Forgetting 때마다 for “whenever” → ✅ 볼 때마다 = every time I see it.

🎉 Bottom line: 마다 is the “every/each” particle. Use it for habits, schedules, groups, places, and “every time” situations. Every-repetition toolkit unlocked. 🔁✨
