TL;DR: Today's words are the pantry essentials of Korean cooking โ€” ์Œ€ (rice, uncooked), ๋ฌผ (water), ๊น€์น˜ (kimchi), ์†Œ๊ธˆ (salt), and ๊ฐ„์žฅ (soy sauce). If a Korean kitchen has just these five things, it can make almost anything.
๐Ÿฆ‹
Iru Helper Note: This lesson wraps up our tour of Korean food vocabulary โ€” from tastes, to cafรฉ drinks, to meat and seafood, to fruits and vegetables, and now the pantry staples that tie it all together! After this, we shift gears completely: the next lesson, <mention-page url="https://app.notion.com/p/344be37590c081f3-8fbf-dfce82fb02e9">, moves from the kitchen to the closet with a color palette theme. Quick example using all five: ํ•œ๊ตญ ์š”๋ฆฌ์—๋Š” ์Œ€, ๋ฌผ, ๊น€์น˜, ์†Œ๊ธˆ, ๊ฐ„์žฅ์ด ๊ฑฐ์˜ ํ•ญ์ƒ ๋“ค์–ด๊ฐ€์š”. (Korean cooking almost always involves rice, water, kimchi, salt, and soy sauce.)

๐ŸŽฏ Big Picture

These five words are the backbone of a Korean kitchen. ์Œ€ and ๋ฌผ are the most basic ingredients of all โ€” rice and water make ๋ฐฅ (cooked rice), the foundation of nearly every Korean meal. ๊น€์น˜ is the iconic side dish that accompanies almost everything. And ์†Œ๊ธˆ and ๊ฐ„์žฅ are the two most fundamental seasonings, used to season, flavor, and balance dishes. Master these five, and you'll understand the foundation of Korean cooking vocabulary.

๐Ÿ“– Core Vocabulary Family

1. ์Œ€ (Rice, uncooked)

์Œ€ refers to raw, uncooked rice โ€” the grain you buy at the store.
  • ์Œ€์„ ์”ป์–ด์„œ ๋ฐฅ์„ ํ•ด์š”. (Wash the rice and cook it.)
  • ์Œ€์ด ์—†์–ด์„œ ๋งˆํŠธ์— ๊ฐ€์•ผ ํ•ด์š”. (We're out of rice, so we need to go to the mart.)
Grammar note: ์Œ€ (uncooked rice) and ๋ฐฅ (cooked rice / a meal) are different words โ€” ์Œ€์„ ์‚ฌ๋‹ค (buy rice) vs. ๋ฐฅ์„ ๋จน๋‹ค (eat a meal/cooked rice). Don't mix them up!

2. ๋ฌผ (Water)

๋ฌผ means water โ€” one of the most basic and useful words in the language.
  • ๋ฌผ ํ•œ ์ž” ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. (One glass of water, please.)
  • ๋ฌผ์„ ๋งŽ์ด ๋งˆ์…”์•ผ ํ•ด์š”. (You should drink lots of water.)
Grammar note: ๋ฌผ pairs with many verbs โ€” ๋ฌผ์„ ๋งˆ์‹œ๋‹ค (drink water), ๋ฌผ์„ ๋“์ด๋‹ค (boil water), ๋ฌผ์— ๋น ์ง€๋‹ค (fall into water).

3. ๊น€์น˜ (Kimchi)

๊น€์น˜ is Korea's most iconic dish โ€” fermented, seasoned vegetables (usually cabbage).
  • ๊น€์น˜๋Š” ํ•œ๊ตญ์˜ ๋Œ€ํ‘œ ์Œ์‹์ด์—์š”. (Kimchi is Korea's representative food.)
  • ๊น€์น˜๋ฅผ ๋งŒ๋“ค ๋•Œ ๋ฐฐ์ถ”๊ฐ€ ํ•„์š”ํ•ด์š”. (You need cabbage to make kimchi.)
Grammar note: Remember ๋ฐฐ์ถ” (cabbage) from the Fruits and Vegetables lesson? It's the main ingredient in most ๊น€์น˜! ๊น€์น˜ is served as a ๋ฐ˜์ฐฌ (side dish) with nearly every meal.

4. ์†Œ๊ธˆ (Salt)

์†Œ๊ธˆ means salt โ€” the most basic seasoning of all.
  • ์†Œ๊ธˆ์„ ์กฐ๊ธˆ๋งŒ ๋„ฃ์–ด ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. (Please add just a little salt.)
  • ์†Œ๊ธˆ์€ ์ง ๋ง›์ด ๋‚˜์š”. (Salt has a salty taste.)
Grammar note: This connects directly to ์งœ๋‹ค (salty) from the Tastes lesson โ€” ์†Œ๊ธˆ is literally what makes food ์งœ๋‹ค! Common verbs: ์†Œ๊ธˆ์„ ๋„ฃ๋‹ค (add salt), ์†Œ๊ธˆ์„ ๋ฟŒ๋ฆฌ๋‹ค (sprinkle salt).

5. ๊ฐ„์žฅ (Soy Sauce)

๊ฐ„์žฅ means soy sauce โ€” a dark, salty, savory liquid seasoning used everywhere.
  • ๊ฐ„์žฅ์— ์ฐ์–ด ๋จน์–ด์š”. (Dip it in soy sauce and eat it.)
  • ๊ฐ„์žฅ์€ ์งœ๊ณ  ์ง„ํ•ด์š”. (Soy sauce is salty and rich.)
Grammar note: ๊ฐ„์žฅ = ๊ฐ„ (seasoning/taste, from ๊ฐ„์„ ๋ณด๋‹ค, "to taste/check seasoning") + ์žฅ (sauce/paste). Other ์žฅ sauces include ๊ณ ์ถ”์žฅ (red pepper paste) and ๋œ์žฅ (soybean paste).

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ How They Work in a Sentence

  1. ์Œ€์„ ์”ป์–ด์„œ ๋ฐฅ์„ ์ง“๊ณ , ๋ฌผ๋„ ๋“์—ฌ์š”. (Wash the rice to cook it, and also boil some water.)
  1. ๊น€์น˜์—๋Š” ์†Œ๊ธˆ๊ณผ ๋‹ค์–‘ํ•œ ์–‘๋…์ด ๋“ค์–ด๊ฐ€์š”. (Kimchi contains salt and various seasonings.)
  1. ๊ฐ„์žฅ๊ณผ ์†Œ๊ธˆ์€ ๋‘˜ ๋‹ค ์ง ๋ง›์„ ๋‚ด๋Š” ๊ธฐ๋ณธ ์–‘๋…์ด์—์š”. (Soy sauce and salt are both basic seasonings that give a salty taste.)

๐Ÿงฑ General Formation Rule

  • ์Œ€ (raw rice) vs. ๋ฐฅ (cooked rice/meal): different words for different stages.
  • ๋ฌผ + ์„/๋ฅผ + ๋งˆ์‹œ๋‹ค/๋“์ด๋‹ค/๋„ฃ๋‹ค: drink/boil/add water.
  • ๊น€์น˜ + ๋ฅผ + ๋งŒ๋“ค๋‹ค/๋จน๋‹ค/๋‹ด๊ทธ๋‹ค: ๋‹ด๊ทธ๋‹ค is the special verb for "making" kimchi (and other fermented foods) โ€” ๊น€์น˜๋ฅผ ๋‹ด๊ทธ๋‹ค.
  • ์†Œ๊ธˆ/๊ฐ„์žฅ + ์„/๋ฅผ + ๋„ฃ๋‹ค/๋ฟŒ๋ฆฌ๋‹ค/์ฐ๋‹ค: add/sprinkle/dip in salt or soy sauce.
  • ์žฅ = sauce/paste family: ๊ฐ„์žฅ (soy sauce), ๊ณ ์ถ”์žฅ (red pepper paste), ๋œ์žฅ (soybean paste).
๐Ÿ”Ž
Cross-check: Search ์Œ€, ๋ฌผ, ๊น€์น˜, ์†Œ๊ธˆ, and ๊ฐ„์žฅ on the ๊ตญ๋ฆฝ๊ตญ์–ด์› ํ‘œ์ค€๊ตญ์–ด๋Œ€์‚ฌ์ „ (National Institute of Korean Language's Standard Korean Dictionary) for official definitions and example sentences.

๐Ÿ” Synonym Alert

  1. ์Œ€ vs. ๋ฐฅ โ€” ์Œ€ is uncooked rice grains (what you buy at the store), while ๋ฐฅ means cooked rice, and by extension "a meal" in general โ€” ๋ฐฅ ๋จน์—ˆ์–ด์š”? means "Have you eaten?" not just "Have you eaten rice?"
  1. ์†Œ๊ธˆ vs. ๊ฐ„ โ€” ์†Œ๊ธˆ is the specific word for "salt," while ๊ฐ„ refers to seasoning/taste level in general โ€” ๊ฐ„์„ ๋ณด๋‹ค (to taste/check the seasoning), ๊ฐ„์ด ์„ธ๋‹ค (it's strongly seasoned).

โš ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge

  1. ์Œ€ (raw rice) โ‰  ๋ฐฅ (cooked rice/meal) โ€” ์Œ€์„ ์‚ฌ๋‹ค (buy rice) vs. ๋ฐฅ์„ ๋จน๋‹ค (eat a meal).
  1. Don't forget the particle ์„/๋ฅผ with ๋ฌผ when it's the object: ๋ฌผ์„ ๋งˆ์…”์š” (I drink water).
  1. Kimchi is "made" with the special verb ๋‹ด๊ทธ๋‹ค (to ferment/pickle), not just ๋งŒ๋“ค๋‹ค โ€” ๊น€์น˜๋ฅผ ๋‹ด๊ทธ๋‹ค.
  1. ๊ฐ„์žฅ (soy sauce), ๊ณ ์ถ”์žฅ (red pepper paste), and ๋œ์žฅ (soybean paste) all end in ์žฅ but are very different sauces โ€” don't mix them up.
  1. ์†Œ๊ธˆ and ๊ฐ„์žฅ both add saltiness but differently โ€” ์†Œ๊ธˆ is plain salt, while ๊ฐ„์žฅ adds salty + umami + color.
