🌈 The Big Picture

Use -게 되다 [-ge doe-da] when an action or situation comes about because of circumstances, arrangements, or decisions. It often feels less direct than “I decided and did it!” and more like “it was decided/arranged that this would happen” or “this is how things turned out.” 🧭

General rule: -게 되다 does not need the 아/어 shape. Attach 게 to the verb stem:
  • 가다 → 가게 되다 [ga-da → ga-ge doe-da] ✅
  • 배우다 → 배우게 되다 [bae-u-da → bae-u-ge doe-da] ✅
  • 읽다 → 읽게 되다 [ik-tta → ik-kke doe-da] ✅

  • 일하다 → 일하게 되다 [il-ha-da → il-ha-ge doe-da] ✅

Write 되다 separately: 가게 되다, 배우게 되다, 알게 되다. This is different from the attached spelling of -아/어지다, such as 좋아지다.

  • 돼요 [dwae-yo] = contracted polite present form of 되어요
  • 되었어요 [doe-eo-sseo-yo] = full polite past form of 되다
  • 됐어요 [dwae-sseo-yo] = contracted polite past form of 되었어요

  • ❌ 읽어게 됐어요 [il-geo-ge dwae-sseo-yo] → ✅ 읽게 됐어요 [ik-kke dwae-sseo-yo] — attach 게 directly to the stem.
  • ❌ 알게됐어요 as one tight chunk → ✅ 알게 됐어요 — keep 되다 separate.
  • ⚠️ Do not translate every -게 됐어요 as “accidentally.” It often means “was arranged to / ended up” because of circumstances, plans, or changes.
