-고 말다 is the grammar of the final result happened. It often feels like:

1. Regretful result: -고 말았다

This is the most common learner-useful form. It says the result happened, often despite hopes, effort, or intention.

Use this when someone is determined to make something happen.

      시험 = exam; 합격하다 = to pass.
