TL;DR 🦄
  • 🤔 -나 싶다 and -(으)ㄴ가 싶다 both express doubtful wondering: “I wonder if... / maybe... / it seems possible that...”
  • 🫧 -나 싶다 feels shorter and more conversational, while -(으)ㄴ/는가 싶다 feels a bit fuller, more reflective, and often more written or careful.
  • 🔎 The advanced skill is choosing the right shade: quiet wondering, evidence-based inference, tentative plan, or polite question.

when you want to hear the difference between 늦어지나 싶어요, 늦어지는가 싶어요, 늦어지나 봐요, and 늦어지는가요?. Tiny endings, big mood swings. 🎧

🌈 The Big Picture

-나 싶다 and -(으)ㄴ가 싶다 live in the “quiet thought bubble” zone. They do not announce a firm conclusion. They let the speaker say, “I’m wondering if this might be true.” 🫧

The intermediate version gives you the basic form. This advanced version sharpens the nuance:
  • 길이 막히나 싶어요. — I wonder if the road is jammed. 🚗
  • 길이 막히는가 싶어요. — I wonder if the road is jammed. (a little more careful/reflective) 🚗
  • 길이 막히나 봐요. — I guess the road is jammed. (more inference from evidence) 🔎
  • 길이 막히는가요? — Is the road jammed? (a question to someone)

The grammar is especially useful when you notice a clue, but you are not fully confident:
  • 회의가 아직 안 시작해요. 조금 늦어지나 싶어요. — The meeting still has not started. I wonder if it is getting a little delayed. 🕒
  • 답장이 없어요. 친구가 바쁜가 싶어요. — There is no reply. I wonder if my friend is busy. 📱
  • 다들 조용해요. 분위기가 어색한가 싶어요. — Everyone is quiet. I wonder if the atmosphere is awkward. 😶

🎨 The Core Wondering Family

1. Action verb present: -나 싶다 / -는가 싶다

Use this when wondering about an action, process, or happening.
  • 오다 — to come → 오나 싶어요 / 오는가 싶어요 — I wonder if someone is coming 🚪
  • 막히다 — to be jammed/blocked → 막히나 싶어요 / 막히는가 싶어요 — I wonder if it is jammed 🚗
  • 늦어지다 — to become delayed → 늦어지나 싶어요 / 늦어지는가 싶어요 — I wonder if it is getting delayed 🕒
  • 시작하다 — to start → 시작하나 싶어요 / 시작하는가 싶어요 — I wonder if it is starting 🏫

2. Descriptive verb/adjective: -(으)ㄴ가 싶다

For adjectives/descriptive verbs, the careful standard learner-safe form is -(으)ㄴ가 싶다.
  • 바쁘다 — to be busy → 바쁜가 싶어요 — I wonder if someone is busy 📱
  • 좋다 — to be good → 좋은가 싶어요 — I wonder if it is good 👍
  • 어렵다 — to be difficult → 어려운가 싶어요 — I wonder if it is difficult 📚
  • 어색하다 — to be awkward → 어색한가 싶어요 — I wonder if it is awkward 😶

You may hear shorter forms like 좋나 싶다 in casual speech, but for polished advanced writing and learner-safe output, prefer 좋은가 싶다.

3. Noun: 인가 싶다

With nouns, use 인가 싶다. Do not attach bare directly to a noun here.
  • 문제 — problem → 문제인가 싶어요 — I wonder if it is a problem 🧩
  • 실수 — mistake → 실수인가 싶어요 — I wonder if it is a mistake 📝
  • 학생 — student → 학생인가 싶어요 — I wonder if they are a student 🎒

4. Past wondering: -았/었나 싶다

For past situations, use -았/었나 싶다.
  • 오다왔나 싶어요 — I wonder if someone came 🚪
  • 끝나다끝났나 싶어요 — I wonder if it ended ✅
  • 피곤하다피곤했나 싶어요 — I wonder if someone was tired 😴
  • 문제문제였나 싶어요 — I wonder if it was a problem 🧩

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

Use the pattern after the clause you are wondering about. Often the sentence has a clue first, then the doubtful thought.

  • 사람이 많아요. 길이 막히나 싶어요.
    • There are many people. I wonder if the road is jammed. 🚗
      사람 = person/people; 많다 = to be many/much; = road; 막히다 = to be jammed/blocked.
  • 설명이 길어요. 조금 어려운가 싶어요.
    • The explanation is long. I wonder if it is a little difficult. 📚
설명 = explanation; 길다 = to be long; 조금 = a little; 어렵다 = to be difficult.
  • 표정이 안 좋아요. 기분이 안 좋은가 싶어요.
    • The expression does not look good. I wonder if the mood is not good. 😟
표정 = facial expression; 기분 = mood; 좋다 = to be good.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Present action/process

  • Shorter conversational: action stem + 나 싶어요
    • 오다오나 싶어요
    • 막히다막히나 싶어요
    • 늦어지다늦어지나 싶어요
  • Fuller/careful: action stem + 는가 싶어요
    • 오다오는가 싶어요
    • 막히다막히는가 싶어요
    • 늦어지다늦어지는가 싶어요

Descriptive verbs/adjectives

Use -(으)ㄴ가 싶어요.
  • Vowel-ending stem + ㄴ가 싶어요: 바쁘다바쁜가 싶어요
  • Consonant-ending stem + 은가 싶어요: 좋다좋은가 싶어요
  • Irregular-style learner trap: 어렵다어려운가 싶어요

Nouns and past

  • Noun + 인가 싶어요: 실수실수인가 싶어요
  • Past + -았/었나 싶어요: 끝나다끝났나 싶어요
✍️
Spacing note
Write 싶다 separately:
  • 늦어지나 싶어요
  • 어려운가 싶어요
  • 문제인가 싶어요
  • 늦어지나싶어요
  • 문제인가싶어요

🔍 Advanced Nuance Map

-나 싶다 / -(으)ㄴ가 싶다

Internal wondering. You are not fully concluding.
  • 회의가 늦어지나 싶어요. — I wonder if the meeting is getting delayed.

-나 보다 / -(으)ㄴ가 보다

Evidence-based inference. You sound more like you are making a guess from clues.
  • 회의가 늦어지나 봐요. — I guess the meeting is getting delayed.

-(으)ㄴ/는가요?

A soft or formal question to another person.
  • 회의가 늦어지는가요? — Is the meeting getting delayed?

-(으)ㄹ까 싶다

Tentative intention or possible plan.
  • 집에 갈까 싶어요. — I’m thinking maybe I’ll go home.

-는 게 아닌가 싶다 / -지 않나 싶다

A cautious negative-question style thought: “I wonder if it isn’t...” / “I suspect maybe...”
  • 이 방법이 더 좋은 게 아닌가 싶어요. — I wonder if this method might actually be better.
  • 조금 어려운 게 아닌가 싶어요. — I wonder if it might be a little difficult.

This last style is advanced because it often sounds like a careful opinion, not just uncertainty. Handle it gently; it can feel like a polite argument in a tiny sweater. 🧶

📚 Cross-check note

The forms and spacing in this lesson were checked against korean.go.kr, including examples showing 꿈인가 싶다, 비가 오는가 싶다, 누가 볼까 싶어, and guidance that 싶다 is a helper adjective written separately in these constructions. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • “It seems possible that...” → 회의가 늦어지나 싶어요. — It seems possible that the meeting is delayed.

  • 혹시 — perhaps / by any chance
  • 조금 — a little
  • 아직 — still / yet
  • 이미 — already
  • 다시 — again

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 문제나 싶어요 → ✅ 문제인가 싶어요. Nouns use 인가.
  • 좋는가 싶어요 → ✅ 좋은가 싶어요. Descriptive verbs use -(으)ㄴ가.
  • 먹은가 싶어요 for present action → ✅ 먹나 싶어요 / 먹는가 싶어요. Present action uses or 는가.
  • 늦어지나싶어요 → ✅ 늦어지나 싶어요. Keep 싶다 separate.
  • ❌ Treating 늦어지나 싶어요, 늦어지나 봐요, and 늦어지는가요? as the same → ✅ wondering, inference, and question are different jobs.

🤔 Tiny ending, huge nuance: -나 싶다 lets you float a thought without pretending it has landed. Elegant uncertainty unlocked. 🫧
