-(으)ㄴ/는 김에 is the Korean “while we’re at it” grammar.
It says that one action, situation, conversation topic, or visit has already created an occasion — so you use that occasion to do something else.
Think:
- Since I’m already doing A, I’ll also do B.
- Since A already happened, I took the chance to do B.
- While we’re at A, let’s do B too.
- Speaking of A / now that A came up, let’s also handle B.

Despite the English title “just because,” this pattern does not mean random “because.” It means A provides the occasion for B. It is efficient, practical, and very natural for errands, chores, visits, meetings, and conversations.

Use this when Action A is planned, ongoing, or about to happen, so you add Action B.
- 가는 김에 [ga-neun gi-me] — since someone is going anyway

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ 김에 = plain “because” → ✅ It means A is the opportunity/occasion for B.
- ❌ 내일 갈 김에 → ✅ usually 내일 가는 김에. Korean.go.kr notes 김 is used with -은/-는 김에, not future -을 김에.
- ❌ 마트에 가는 김에 우유도 샀어요 for a completed past trip → ✅ 마트에 간 김에 우유도 샀어요.
- ❌ 만들은 김에 → ✅ 만든 김에. ㄹ drops before ㄴ.
