Basic Grammar
🤝
TL;DR 🦄
  • 🤝 -아/어 주다 [-a/eo ju-da] means to do an action for someone / as a favor.
  • 🎁 The action happens first, then 주다 [ju-da] adds the “for someone’s benefit” feeling: 열다 [yeol-da] = to open → 열어 주다 [yeo-reo ju-da] = to open for someone.
  • 🧩 Use -아 주다 [-a ju-da] after many ㅏ/ㅗ vowel stems, -어 주다 [-eo ju-da] after most other stems, and 해 주다 [hae ju-da] for 하다 [ha-da] verbs.
  • 🙏 The request form -아/어 주세요 [-a/eo ju-se-yo] means please do it for me/us.

and listen to 문을 열어 주세요 [mu-neul yeo-reo ju-se-yo], 사진을 찍어 주세요 [sa-ji-neul jji-geo ju-se-yo], and 제가 도와줄게요 [je-ga do-wa jul-ge-yo]. This grammar should sound helpful, not bossy. 🤝

🌈 The Big Picture

주다 [ju-da] usually means to give. But after another verb, it often becomes a helper verb that means the action is done for someone’s benefit. 🎁

The basic idea is:
  • 문을 열어요. [mu-neul yeo-reo-yo] = I open the door. 🚪
  • 문을 열어 줘요. [mu-neul yeo-reo jwo-yo] = I open the door for someone. 🚪🤝
  • 문을 열어 주세요. [mu-neul yeo-reo ju-se-yo] = Please open the door for me/us. 🙏

Tiny map: 문을 [mu-neul] = the door as the object, 열어 [yeo-reo] = open, and 주세요 [ju-se-yo] = please do it for me/us.

🎨 The Core Favor Family

Main pattern
  • 동사 = verb + -아/어 주다 [-a/eo ju-da] = do the verb for someone 🤝

Useful polite forms
  • -아/어 줘요 [-a/eo jwo-yo] = does it for someone / please do it for me in a softer casual-polite way
  • -아/어 주세요 [-a/eo ju-se-yo] = please do it for me/us 🙏
  • -아/어 줄게요 [-a/eo jul-ge-yo] = I’ll do it for you 🤝

How to choose 아 or 어
  • If the verb stem’s last vowel is usually or , use -아 주다:
    • 찾다 [chat-da] = to find / look for 🔎 → 찾아 주다 [cha-ja ju-da] = to find for someone
    • 사다 [sa-da] = to buy 🛒 → 사 주다 [sa ju-da] = to buy for someone
  • Most other verb stems use -어 주다:
    • 열다 [yeol-da] = to open 🚪 → 열어 주다 [yeo-reo ju-da] = to open for someone
    • 읽다 [ik-da] = to read 📚 → 읽어 주다 [il-geo ju-da] = to read for someone
    • 찍다 [jjik-da] = to take a photo 📷 → 찍어 주다 [jji-geo ju-da] = to take a photo for someone
  • 하다 [ha-da] becomes 해 주다 [hae ju-da]:
    • 설명하다 [seol-myeong-ha-da] = to explain 🧠 → 설명해 주다 [seol-myeong-hae ju-da] = to explain for someone

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

1. Doing a favor
  • 친구가 문을 열어 줘요. [chin-gu-ga mu-neul yeo-reo jwo-yo] = A friend opens the door for me/someone. 🚪
    • 친구가 [chin-gu-ga] = a friend as the doer, 문을 [mu-neul] = the door as the object.
  • 제가 사진을 찍어 줄게요. [je-ga sa-ji-neul jji-geo jul-ge-yo] = I’ll take a photo for you. 📷
    • 제가 [je-ga] = I as the doer, 사진을 [sa-ji-neul] = a photo as the object.

2. Asking for a favor
  • 문을 열어 주세요. [mu-neul yeo-reo ju-se-yo] = Please open the door for me/us. 🚪
  • 이름을 써 주세요. [i-reu-meul sseo ju-se-yo] = Please write the name for me/us. ✍️

3. Showing the person helped
  • 친구에게 길을 알려 줘요. [chin-gu-e-ge gi-reul al-lyeo jwo-yo] = I tell/show the way to a friend. 🛣️
    • 친구에게 [chin-gu-e-ge] = to a friend, 길을 [gi-reul] = the way as the object.

🚨 Exception Rule(s)

Most forms follow the same 아/어 choice you already know. Watch these common shapes:
  • 하다 → 해 주다 [ha-da → hae ju-da] = to do for someone ✅
  • 돕다 → 도와주다 [dop-da → do-wa-ju-da] = to help 🤝
    • 도와주다 is commonly written as one word because it is a lexicalized verb meaning “to help.”
  • 주다 → 줘요 [ju-da → jwo-yo] = gives / does for someone in polite speech 🎁

Spacing note ✍️
As a helper verb, 주다 is usually written separately in clear teaching examples: 열어 주다, 찍어 주다, 읽어 주다. Some forms are often allowed or fixed as one word, such as 도와주다. For this lesson, focus on the meaning first: action + for someone’s benefit.

📚 Cross-check note

This lesson’s helper-verb use of 주다 was cross-checked against 국립국어원 / korean.go.kr, including guidance that -어 주다 can be a helper verb showing that the previous action affects or benefits another person. ✅

🪞 Formality Alert

When doing something for someone older, higher-status, or in a formal situation, Korean often uses -아/어 드리다 [-a/eo deu-ri-da] instead of -아/어 주다:
  • 제가 도와드릴게요. [je-ga do-wa-deu-ril-ge-yo] = I’ll help you. / I’ll do this for you respectfully. 🙇

This page drills -아/어 주다 first. Keep 드리다 in your “polite upgrade” pocket for later. 🧥

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 열다 주세요 [yeol-da ju-se-yo] → ✅ 열어 주세요 [yeo-reo ju-se-yo] — use the 아/어 connection, not dictionary form.
  • 사진을 찍아 주세요 [sa-ji-neul jji-ga ju-se-yo] → ✅ 사진을 찍어 주세요 [sa-ji-neul jji-geo ju-se-yo] — 찍다 uses -어, not -아.
  • 설명하 주다 [seol-myeong-ha ju-da] → ✅ 설명해 주다 [seol-myeong-hae ju-da] — 하다 changes to .
  • ⚠️ 주세요 can mean please give me with a noun, as in 물 주세요 [mul ju-se-yo] = Please give me water. With a verb, it means please do the action for me, as in 열어 주세요 [yeo-reo ju-se-yo] = Please open it for me.

🎉 -아/어 주다 [-a/eo ju-da] is your “kind action” grammar. It turns plain actions into favors, help, and tiny acts of Korean kindness. 🤝✨
