Discussing Public Transportation vs. Driving
Compare transit and car commuting in Korean — share your preference, the trade-offs, and what works where you live.
Iru Helper Note
Koreans frame this as a personal preference discussion — not a debate. Starting with 저는 ~하는 편이에요 keeps it conversational.
(I tend to use public transportation. In Seoul, the subway is the most convenient.)
🚗 What You'll Learn Today
Today you'll learn how to discuss the pros and cons of public transportation vs. driving in natural Korean. You'll practice comparison expressions like ~보다 더 (more than ~), ~에 비해서 (compared to ~), and ~는 장점이 있다/단점이 있다 (has the advantage/disadvantage of ~). These patterns work far beyond transportation — they're your toolkit for any comparison conversation.

💬 Conversations in Action
Dialogue 1 — City vs. car preference
(How do you mainly commute?)
(I tend to use the subway. In Seoul there's a lot of traffic so driving takes longer.)
A: 주차도 힘들죠? (Parking is also tough, right?)
(Yes, the parking fee is expensive and finding a spot is also hard. Public transit is much more convenient.)
Dialogue 2 — When driving wins
A: 차가 있어요? (Do you have a car?)
(Yes, I have one but I mainly use it only on weekends. On weekdays the subway is better.)
(Isn't it inconvenient without a car?)
(In Seoul, public transportation is so well-developed that it's not very inconvenient.)
🌏 Cultural Note — 교통 문화 in Korea
Seoul has one of the world's most efficient public transit systems — the 서울 지하철 (Seoul subway) covers 9 lines and connects to bus networks via a unified 교통카드 (T-money transit card) system. Free transfers within 30 minutes make it very affordable. Despite this, car ownership is high, and 교통 체증 (traffic congestion) during peak hours is severe — especially on the 강남대로 (Gangnam Boulevard). Outside Seoul, in mid-sized cities and rural areas, driving is far more necessary. The phrase 서울에서는 차가 필요 없다 (in Seoul, you don't need a car) is a genuine opinion many Seoulites hold.
