🌏 Cultural Note — 전세 and 월세

전세 (jeonse) is unique to Korea: instead of paying monthly rent, a tenant pays a large lump-sum deposit (typically 50–80% of the property value) that is returned at the end of the lease. This protects both parties in a high-trust arrangement. 월세 (wolse) is monthly rent plus a smaller deposit. Knowing this distinction isn't just vocabulary — it signals cultural fluency and helps you navigate the housing market if you live in or visit Korea.

Pitfall: 전세 vs 월세 confusion

전세 = a large lump-sum deposit (no ongoing monthly rent). 월세 = monthly rent + smaller deposit. These are fundamentally different systems. Saying 전세 월세 얼마예요? (how much is the jeonse monthly rent?) contradicts itself — 전세 has no monthly payment.
