💡 Key pattern: 만약에 [event]이/가 일어나지 않았다면, [consequence]았/었을 거예요 — this "if X hadn't happened, Y would have" structure is the core alternative history sentence in Korean.

🌏 Cultural Note — Koreans and Historical Reflection

Tip: 아예 vs. 훨씬
아예 = completely / not at all (adds totality): 아예 달라졌을 것 같아요 = I think it would have changed completely. 훨씬 = much / far (comparative intensifier): 훨씬 빨랐을 거예요 = it would have been much faster. Use 아예 for total change, 훨씬 for degree of change.

Pitfall: ~됐을까요 vs. ~됐을까요?
어떻게 됐어요? = What happened? (asking about real past). 어떻게 됐을까요? = What would have happened? (speculating about a hypothetical past). The difference is ~을까요 — this marks speculative wondering, not factual inquiry. Don't drop it when discussing alternative histories!

Grammar Tip: ~겠죠 in Counterfactuals
지금 이렇게 못 했겠죠 = "I probably wouldn't be able to do this now, right?" ~겠죠 (겠지요) in counterfactuals adds a sense of shared understanding — the speaker thinks the listener would agree with the speculation. It's softer than just ~을 거예요 and invites implicit agreement from the other person.
