TL;DR
- ๐ The 6 diphthongs (ใ ใ ใ ใ ข ใ ใ ) are glides โ two vowels smooshed into one quick syllable.
- ๐งฑ Each one stacks a horizontal vowel (ใ ใ ใ ก) with a vertical vowel (ใ ใ ใ ฃ ใ ใ ) โ horizontal first, vertical to the right.
- ๐ ใ and ใ sound identical in modern Korean, and ใ ข has 3 different pronunciations depending on where it sits โ spellings matter more than your ears.
ย
Iru Helper Note: Diphthongs are the last vowel group in Hangul โ finish these and you've officially seen every Korean vowel that exists. They look intimidating but they're just two vowels you already know glued together. Take a breath, you've got this. ๐ฆ

๐ The Big Picture
These vowels are called ์ด์ค๋ชจ์ (i-jung-mo-eum, "double vowels") โ just like the complex vowels you learned. But these are true diphthongs: your mouth actually glides from one vowel sound into another within a single syllable.
The trick is simple: take a horizontal vowel (the ones that sit above or below the consonant) and pair it with a vertical vowel (the ones that sit to the right). The result is a compound vowel that wraps around the consonant. ๐
- ใ + ใ = ใ
- ใ + ใ = ใ
- ใ + ใ ฃ = ใ
- ใ ก + ใ ฃ = ใ ข
- ใ + ใ = ใ (or think ใ + ใ + ใ ฃ)
- ใ + ใ = ใ (or think ใ + ใ + ใ ฃ)
No new strokes โ just stacking vowels you already know. โจ
๐จ The Core Diphthong Family
๐ W-Glide Trio (horizontal + vertical, smooth glide)
- ใ [wa] โ like "wa" in wash ๐ง. Built from ใ + ใ .
- ใ [wo] โ like "wo" in won (closer to "wuh") ๐ฐ. Built from ใ + ใ .
- ใ [wi] โ like "wee" in week ๐. Built from ใ + ใ ฃ.
๐ญ The W-E Twins (both sound like "we" โ yes, really!)
- ใ [wae] โ like "wae" in wax โ. Built from ใ + ใ .
- ใ [we] โ like "we" in wedding ๐. Built from ใ + ใ .
๐ฆ The Lone Wolf
- ใ ข [ui] โ a quick "u-i" glide that shape-shifts depending on position ๐. Built from ใ ก + ใ ฃ.
๐ช How They Work in a Sentence: Silent ใ + Vowel-Only Words
Like every vowel you've learned, diphthongs need the silent ใ
chair to stand alone as a syllable.
- ใ + ใ = ์ [wa] โ "and" / "wow!" ๐ฒ
- ใ + ใ = ์ [wo] โ (rare alone; mostly seen in compounds like ๋ชจ 'what' โ coming in later lessons) ๐
- ใ + ใ = ์ [wi] โ "above / on top" โฌ๏ธ
- ใ + ใ ข = ์ [ui] โ "of / 's" (possessive particle) ๐
- ใ + ใ = ์ [wae] โ "why" โ
- ใ + ใ = ์จ [we] โ (rare alone; mostly in loanwords like ์จ๋ฉ 'wedding') ๐
Vowel-only words you can read right now:
- ์! [wa] โ "Wow!" / "And" ๐คฉ
- ์ฐ์! [u-wa] โ "Whoa!" (extra emphasis) ๐
- ์ [wi] โ "above" โฌ๏ธ
- ์์ [wi-e] โ "on top of" (uses ์ from your last lesson!) ๐
- ์ [ui] โ "of" (possessive) ๐
- ์์ [ui-ui] โ "significance / meaning" ๐
- ์ [wae] โ "why" โ
- ์์? [wae-yo] โ "Why?" (polite, uses ์ from your basic vowels lesson!) ๐
- ์์ด [wa-i] โ "Y" (the letter) ๐ค
โ๏ธ Stroke Magic: How to Build Them
Each diphthong is horizontal vowel โ vertical vowel, written in that order:
- Write the horizontal vowel first (ใ ใ ใ ก).
- Add the vertical vowel to the right (ใ ใ ใ ฃ ใ ใ ).
- The combo wraps the consonant: horizontal sits below, vertical sits right.
For ใ
and ใ
(the W-E twins): it's a horizontal + a complex vowel โ still the same logic, just one extra tick. ๐
๐ค Romanization Cheats
- ใ โ wa
- ใ โ wo (sometimes "weo" โ sounds closer to "wuh")
- ใ โ wi
- ใ ข โ ui (sometimes "eui")
- ใ โ wae
- ใ โ we
The w- prefix shows up whenever a horizontal vowel (ใ
or ใ
) leads. ใ
ข is the rebel โ no "w". ๐ฆ
๐ The Tricky ใ ข Rule โ ๏ธ
ใ
ข has THREE pronunciations depending on where it sits. This is the famous Korean spelling-vs-sound mismatch โ don't fight it, just memorize the pattern:
- ๐ At the START of a word: pronounced [ui] โ the "correct" sound.
- ์์ [ui-ja] โ chair (coming in a later lesson with consonants) ๐ช
- ๐ In the MIDDLE or END of a word: pronounced [i] โ just like ใ ฃ.
- ํ์ [hoe-i] โ meeting ๐ (later lesson)
- ๐ As the POSSESSIVE particle: pronounced [e] โ just like ใ .
- ๋์ [na-e] โ "my" ๐ค (later lesson)
For now: when you see ์ at the start of a word (as in ์์), say [ui]. We'll drill positions 2 and 3 once you know consonants. ๐งโ๐ซ
๐ Cross-check note
All diphthong forms, vowel-only words, and the ใ
ข pronunciation rules above were cross-checked against the National Institute of Korean Language (korean.go.kr) official orthography guide. โ
โ ๏ธ Pitfalls to Avoid
- โ Pronouncing ใ and ใ differently โ โ They sound identical in modern Korean. Just memorize spellings of common words. ๐
- โ Pausing between the two vowels (saying "u-a" instead of "wa") โ โ Diphthongs glide smoothly in one syllable. No pause. ๐ถ
- โ Reading ใ ข the same way every time โ โ Three pronunciations: [ui] at start, [i] mid/end, [e] as possessive. ๐
- โ Romanizing ใ as "woh" โ โ It's closer to "wuh" โ the ใ sound is more like the "u" in "cup". ๐ก
- โ Treating ใ and ใ as separate sounds โ โ Spelling distinguishes them, sound does not. ๐ฏ
๐ You've now seen every Korean vowel! That's 10 basic + 4 complex + 6 diphthongs = 20 vowels mastered. Hangul vowels are officially behind you โ next stop, consonants! ๐
