TL;DR 🦄
  • 🧵 Long Korean sentences are easier when you manage them as meaning chunks: background → main point → contrast/reason → conclusion.
  • 🌬️ 긴 문장 호흡 [gin mun-jang ho-heup] means “long-sentence breathing”: pause after clause endings like -고 [-go] (and), -지만 [-ji-man] (but), and -기 때문에 [-gi ttae-mu-ne] (because).
  • 🧭 Good compound-clause management keeps the main point visible. The sentence may be long, but the reader should never need a flashlight and emergency snacks.

🧭
Advanced level note

This lesson is not another beginner connector list. It focuses on controlling long sentence flow: where to pause, where to place the main claim, and how to prevent connectors from turning one sentence into a runaway grammar train. 🚄

🌈 The Big Picture

A long Korean sentence is not just a short sentence wearing a trench coat. 🧥 It usually contains several clauses, and each clause has a job: add information, give a reason, show contrast, or land the main point.

The key phrase for this lesson is 긴 문장 호흡 [gin mun-jang ho-heup] — “long-sentence breathing.” means “long,” 문장 means “sentence,” and 호흡 means “breath/rhythm.” In real Korean reading and speaking, you do not sprint through every syllable. You pause at natural clause joints. 🌬️

A manageable long sentence often follows this rhythm:
  • 배경 [bae-gyeong] — background
  • 이유 [i-yu] — reason
  • 대조 [dae-jo] — contrast
  • 핵심 [haek-sim] — key point
  • 결론 [gyeol-lon] — conclusion

The advanced skill is deciding what belongs in the same sentence and what deserves its own sentence. Long is fine. Foggy is not. 🌫️

🎨 The Core Long-Sentence Family

1. Add information with -고 [-go] — “and” 🔗

Use -고 to connect actions or states in a list-like flow.
  • 자료가 많고 설명이 깁니다 [ja-ryo-ga man-ko seol-myeong-i gim-ni-da] — The material is extensive, and the explanation is long.
    • 자료 = material/data; 많다 = to be many/much; 설명 = explanation; 길다 = to be long.

2. Show contrast with -지만 [-ji-man] — “but/although” ⚖️

Use -지만 when the next clause pushes against the first clause.
  • 설명은 길지만 핵심은 분명합니다 [seol-myeong-eun gil-ji-man haek-si-meun bun-myeong-ham-ni-da] — The explanation is long, but the key point is clear.
    • 핵심 = key point; 분명하다 = to be clear.

3. Give a reason with -기 때문에 [-gi ttae-mu-ne] — “because” 🧾

Use -기 때문에 for a clear reason, especially in formal explanation.
  • 문장이 길기 때문에 호흡이 중요합니다 [mun-jang-i gil-gi ttae-mu-ne ho-heu-bi jung-yo-ham-ni-da] — Because the sentence is long, rhythm is important.
    • 중요하다 = to be important.

4. Add a formal parallel clause with -(으)며 [-eu-myeo] — “and/while” 🧩

Use -(으)며 for a more formal written connection. It can list related states or actions neatly.
  • 구조가 복잡하며 의미가 분명합니다 [gu-jo-ga bok-jap-ha-myeo ui-mi-ga bun-myeong-ham-ni-da] — The structure is complex, and the meaning is clear.
    • 구조 = structure; 복잡하다 = to be complex; 의미 = meaning.

5. Land the main point with 핵심은 [haek-si-meun] — “as for the key point” 🎯

In long sentences, 핵심은 helps the reader find the main idea.
  • 예문은 길지만 핵심은 간단합니다 [ye-mun-eun gil-ji-man haek-si-meun gan-dan-ham-ni-da] — The example sentence is long, but the key point is simple.
    • 예문 = example sentence; 간단하다 = to be simple.

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

  • 자료가 많고 설명이 길지만 핵심은 분명합니다.
    • [ja-ryo-ga man-ko seol-myeong-i gil-ji-man haek-si-meun bun-myeong-ham-ni-da]
The material is extensive and the explanation is long, but the key point is clear. 🧾
Here, -고 adds information, and -지만 turns toward the main point.

  • 문장이 길기 때문에 호흡을 나누어 읽어야 합니다.
    • [mun-jang-i gil-gi ttae-mu-ne ho-heu-beul na-nu-eo il-geo-ya ham-ni-da]
Because the sentence is long, you should divide the rhythm while reading. 🌬️
나누다 = to divide; 읽다 = to read.

  • 구조는 복잡하며 의미는 분명해야 합니다.
    • [gu-jo-neun bok-jap-ha-myeo ui-mi-neun bun-myeong-hae-ya ham-ni-da]
The structure may be complex, and the meaning should be clear. 🧩
-아/어야 하다 = should/must; here 분명해야 합니다 means “should be clear.”

🧩 General Formation Rule

Additive clause

  • A-고 B — A and B
    • 자료가 많고 설명이 깁니다 [ja-ryo-ga man-ko seol-myeong-i gim-ni-da] — The material is extensive, and the explanation is long.

Contrast clause

  • A-지만 B — A, but B
    • 문장은 길지만 의미는 분명합니다 [mun-jang-eun gil-ji-man ui-mi-neun bun-myeong-ham-ni-da] — The sentence is long, but the meaning is clear.

Reason clause

  • A-기 때문에 B — because A, B
    • 구조가 복잡하기 때문에 예문을 나누어 봅니다 [gu-jo-ga bok-jap-ha-gi ttae-mu-ne ye-mu-neul na-nu-eo bom-ni-da] — Because the structure is complex, we divide the example sentence.

Formal parallel clause

  • A-(으)며 B — A and/while B
    • Consonant stem: 길다 → 길며 [gil-da → gil-myeo] — to be long → being long/and long
    • Vowel stem: 크다 → 크며 [keu-da → keu-myeo] — to be big → being big/and big
    • 하다 verb/adjective: 복잡하다 → 복잡하며 [bok-jap-ha-da → bok-jap-ha-myeo] — to be complex → being complex/and complex

🚨 Exception Rule(s)

These are not irregular grammar exceptions; they are sentence-control rules:
  • If a sentence uses more than two connectors, check whether one clause should become a separate sentence.
  • Do not stack -고 again and again when the relationship is actually reason, contrast, or conclusion.
  • Put the main point near a clear marker like 핵심은 (“as for the key point”) or 결론은 (“as for the conclusion”) when the sentence becomes dense.
  • Pause after clause endings when reading aloud: -고, -지만, -기 때문에, and -(으)며.
🌬️
Breathing note

Read this in chunks:
자료가 많고 / 설명이 길지만 / 핵심은 분명합니다.
[ja-ryo-ga man-ko / seol-myeong-i gil-ji-man / haek-si-meun bun-myeong-ham-ni-da]
The material is extensive / and the explanation is long / but the key point is clear.

📚 Cross-check note

The connective endings and punctuation/rhythm guidance in this lesson were checked against National Institute of Korean Language resources at korean.go.kr, including guidance on Korean connective endings, punctuation, and the importance of dividing long utterances into meaningful speech chunks. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • 문장 [mun-jang] — sentence; standard grammar word.
  • 구조 [gu-jo] — structure; useful for analyzing long sentences.
  • 핵심 [haek-sim] — key point; everyday and academic.
  • 요점 [yo-jjeom] — main point; close to 핵심, often used for summaries.
  • 호흡 [ho-heup] — breath/rhythm; useful when discussing reading flow.
  • 흐름 [heu-reum] — flow; useful for paragraph or sentence movement.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 자료가 많고 설명이 길고 구조가 복잡하고 핵심이 없습니다 → ✅ Split or organize: 자료가 많고 설명이 길지만 핵심은 분명해야 합니다. (Too many -고 clauses can blur the point.)
  • ❌ Reading without pauses → ✅ 자료가 많고 / 설명이 길지만 / 핵심은 분명합니다. (Pause at clause joints.)
  • ❌ Using -고 for every relationship → ✅ Use -지만 for contrast and -기 때문에 for reason.
  • ❌ Hiding the main point at the very end of a crowded sentence → ✅ Use 핵심은 or 결론은 to guide the reader.
  • ❌ Making every sentence long to sound advanced → ✅ Advanced Korean is controlled Korean: long when useful, short when clearer.

🎉 Bottom line: a long Korean sentence should breathe like a good paragraph in miniature — connected, paced, and clear enough that the main point waves politely from the middle. 🧵✨
