Life Now vs Three Years Ago
Learn to compare your past and present self — talking about how your life, habits, and perspective have changed.
Iru Helper Note
The key structure for comparing past and present is: 예전에는 ~았/었어요, 근데 지금은 ~아/어요. (Before, I used to ~. But now, I ~.) Adding 많이 달라졌어요 (it's changed a lot) or 그때랑 지금이 많이 달라요 (then and now are very different) wraps up the comparison naturally.
(Before, it was hard to get up early, but now it's become a habit. A lot has changed, right?)
⏳ What You'll Learn Today
Today you'll learn how to compare your past and present life naturally in Korean. The core structure is 예전에는 ~았/었어요 (before, I used to ~) versus 지금은 ~아/어요 (now, I ~), connected by 근데 or 그런데 (but). You'll also use 많이 달라졌어요 (a lot has changed) and ~게 됐어요 (I came to ~, it became the case that ~) to describe gradual changes in yourself.

💬 Conversations in Action
Conversation 1 — Comparing work habits
(Is the way you work these days different from 3 years ago?)
(A lot has changed. Before, staying at work until late at night was normal, but now I think resting after work is important.)
(Then and now are completely different.)
(Right. Thinking about it now, I don't know why I was like that then.)
Conversation 2 — Comparing lifestyle habits

A: 대단해요. (That's impressive. How did you change like that?)
(Looking back, I think it changed gradually. It didn't change overnight.)
🌏 Cultural Note — Reflection and Growth in Korean Culture
Koreans often reflect on personal change in conversations about life stages — especially when discussing 사회생활 (professional/social life), 건강 (health), or 가치관 (values). Phrases like 돌이켜보면 (looking back) and 그때는 몰랐어요 (I didn't know that then) are marks of maturity and self-awareness that Korean people respect. Comparing your past and present self positively is a sign of 성장 (growth), and Koreans often celebrate this in friends: 많이 달라졌다, 잘 하고 있어 (You've changed a lot, you're doing well).
